Susceptibility of the Namchi and Kapsiki cattle of Cameroon to trypanosome infection.

Two indigenous Cameroonian taurine cattle breeds (Namchi and Kapsiki) were evaluated for trypanosusceptibility following inoculation with Trypanosoma congolense. The degree of zebu ancestry in the experimental animals was assessed using 6 microsatellite markers which are known to have certain unique alleles which are diagnostic of Bos indicus genetic input. Their response to the infection was compared to that of known trypanotolerant (N'Dama) and trypanosusceptible (Ngaoundere Gudali) cattle. The Namchi and the N'Dama controlled the development and severity of anaemia and parasitaemia better t

Estimation of the number of cases of schistosomiasis in a country: the example of Cameroon.

An estimate of the number of schistosomiasis infections in Cameroon was based on a statistically representative national prevalence survey carried out in the entire country. The number of cases of infection by Schistosoma haematobium was estimated to be 393,900, and 419,600 for S. mansoni, a total of 813,500. Taking into account the dual infections the total number of cases was 719,100 (95% confidence interval: 392 900-1 027,800). A current World Health Organization estimate extrapolating from the results of limited epidemiological surveys showed 2,239 591 cases for Cameroon, an estimate 3.1 t

[Chronic pancreatitis in Cameroon. Analysis of etiological and clinical aspects].

In a collection of 3,571 patient's files admitted in the University Teaching Hospital and the Yaounde General Hospital, we studied 27 patients suspected of chronic pancreatitis. 20 patients with calcified chronic pancreatitis benefited from a detailed history, physical examination and a complete paraclinical work-up. From the data collected, chronic alcoholism seemed to have been the main aetiology. Industrial beer from barley alone and/or associated with other traditional liquors was most consumed. The majority of patients were heavy alcoholics and daily consumption varied from 75 to 124 g of

Endemic elephantiasis of the lower legs in the United Cameroon Republic.

Evidence for an association of endemic non-filarial elephantiasis of the lower legs with areas of red clay soils around volcanoes has been noted in several countries bordering the Rift Valley in East Africa. It was of interest to observe whether the association is also present in an area of endemic prevalence of the disease in West Africa. Such an area occurs in the Cameroon highlands where it has been suggested that onchocerciasis might be an etiological factor. The present study describes the results of a survey in this area. There was no statistical evidence of a relationship with onchocerc

[The contribution of biology laboratories to keep immunization recommendations up to date: the example of the Centre Pasteur of Cameroon in the fight against meningococcal meningitis in North-Cameroon].

The Centre Pasteur of Cameroon, Annex of Garoua, studied since 2007 méningococcus of meningitidis in the North of Cameroon. The serogroup A méningococcus completely seem to have disappeared with the profit from the serogroup W135 méningococcus. Current measurements of answers to an epidemic, based between others on reactive vaccination will have to take into account these new data to remain effective. Trivalent vaccine ACW135, placed at the disposal by WHO, should logically be able to be used in the event of epidemic, under reserve of an identification of the germ by a laboratory. The diffusio

DMD-related muscular dystrophy in Cameroon: Clinical and genetic profiles.

BACKGROUND: Most of the previous studies on Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) were conducted in Caucasian, Asian, and Arab populations. Therefore, little is known about the features of this disease in Africans. In this study, we aimed to determine the clinical characteristics of DMD, and the common mutations associated with this condition in a group of Cameroonian patients. METHODS: We recruited DMD patients and performed a general physical examination on each of them. Multiplex ligand-dependant probe amplification was carried out to investigate exon deletions and duplications in the DMD gene

[Association between malaria and low birth weight in Yaounde, Cameroon].

INTRODUCTION: Low birth weight (LBW) is an important predictor of newborn survival and development. Given its pathophysiology, malaria is presumed to be one of the risk factors for low birth weight. This study aims to determine the association between malaria in pregnant women (PW) and LBW (weight < 2500 g). METHODS: We conducted a case-control analytical study based on the administration of a questionnaire and an observation chart. We calculated the crude odds ratio (OR) and the adjusted odds ratio to determine this association. Logistic regression was applied to recognize the variables whic

Risk factors for hepatitis C virus transmission in colonial Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: In southern Cameroon, where SIV(cpz), the source of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) group M, is prevalent among wild chimpanzees, approximately 50% of some human birth cohorts have been infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) through unclear mechanisms. METHODS: To evaluate indirectly the hypothesis that medical interventions contributed to the early emergence of HIV-1, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 451 inhabitants of Ebolowa in southern Cameroon aged 60 years, using HCV as a marker of parenteral transmission of blood-borne viruses. We administered a questionnaire a

Association between intimate partner violence and induced abortion in Cameroon.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between intimate partner violence (IPV; physical, sexual, and emotional violence) and induced abortion in Cameroon. METHODS: We used data from the 2004 Cameroon Demographic Health Survey (DHS) and hierarchic multivariate modeling to compare the rates of induced abortion by IPV type. RESULTS: In 2004, 2570 women were administered the domestic violence module of the DHS. Of those women, 126 (4.9%) reported having had at least 1 induced abortion. Cameroonian women reported high rates of IPV: physical violence (995 [38.7%]); emotional violence (789 [30.7%]);

Simian foamy virus transmission from apes to humans, rural Cameroon.

Simian virus infections of humans are an increasing public health concern. Simian foamy virus (SFV) infections have been reported in persons occupationally exposed to nonhuman primates and in a few hunters in Cameroon. To better understand this retroviral zoonosis in natural settings, we studied persons who lived in southern Cameroon, near nonhuman primate habitats. First we studied a general population of 1,164 adults; 4 were SFV positive according to serologic and molecular assays. Then we studied 85 persons who reported having been bitten or scratched by nonhuman primates; 7/29 (24.1%) of t
