Tissue and Sex-Specific Transcriptomic Signatures Underlying Aggression behavior of Chinese Mitten Crab (Eriocheir sinensis).

Aggressive behavior is a critical constraint on sustainable crustacean aquaculture, causing cannibalism and yield loss. However, in the economically important Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis), the molecular mechanisms underlying aggression responsiveness, particularly sex-specific regulation, remain poorly understood. Here, we used a standardized behavioral assay to quantify reactive aggression across three developmental stages and classified the quantified crabs into high-, moderate-, and low-aggression groups. Biochemical and transcriptomic profiling of the thoracic ganglion and the

Hyperactive Rac converts sublethal to lethal trogocytosis in vivo.

The small GTPase Rac is an essential regulator of cell shape, migration, macropinocytosis, and phagocytosis. We found that expression of constitutively active RacG12V is sufficient to cause a few migratory cells called border cells to cannibalize neighboring nurse cells in the Drosophila ovary. Building on that insight, we engineered mammalian Rac-enhanced chimeric-antigen-receptor macrophages (RaceCAR-Ms) to avidly engulf and kill cancer cells. Here, we investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which border cells efficiently kill the much larger nurse cells. Surprisingly, wild type

Taphonomic inferences about Middle Pleistocene hominins: The human cranium of Gruta da Aroeira (Portugal).

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to describe the taphonomic signatures of the Aroeira 3 cranium, with a specific focus on cranial breakage, comparing the cranium with other Middle and Upper Pleistocene hominin fossils in order to approximate the cause of death and the biological agencies and geologic processes involved in the taphonomic record of this specimen. Aroeira-3 was recovered from Acheulean layer X of Gruta da Aroeira (Portugal), dated to 390-436 ka. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Taphonomic analyses noted surface modifications employing standard methods. The cranial breakage pattern of A

Tuning flux: autophagy as a target of heart disease therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite maximum medical and mechanical support therapy, heart failure remains a relentlessly progressive disorder with substantial morbidity and mortality. Autophagy, an evolutionarily conserved process of cellular cannibalization, has been implicated in virtually all forms of cardiovascular disease. Indeed, its role is context dependent, antagonizing or promoting disease depending on the circumstance. Here, we review current understanding of the role of autophagy in the pathogenesis of heart failure and explore this pathway as a target of therapeutic intervention. RECENT F

Oviposition behavior of the wheat stem sawfly when encountering plants infested with cryptic conspecifics.

Insect herbivores typically oviposit on the most suitable hosts, but choices can be modulated by detection of potential competition among conspecifics, especially when eggs are deposited cryptically. Larvae of the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, developing within an already infested stem, experience elevated risk when only one will survive because of cannibalism. To increase our understanding of host selection when the choices made by females can lead to severe intraspecific competition, females were presented with either uninfested wheat plants or with plants previously exposed to o

Nuptial gifts and sexual behavior in two species of spider (Araneae, Trechaleidae, Paratrechalea).

Male delivering of a prey packed in silk as a nuptial gift is rare in spiders and restricted until now to Pisauridae. Here, we describe this behavioral pattern found in two Trechaleidae species, Paratrechalea azul Carico 2005, and Paratrechalea ornata (Mello-Leitão 1943), mainly based on field observations. We observed the following steps of sexual behavior: sperm induction, nuptial gift construction, mate searching, pre-copulatory courtship, copulation, and copulatory ending. In this group, a nuptial gift consists of a prey wrapped in silk, which appears as a white rounded shape. The male car

Parasitogenic alterations of vector behaviour.

In many parasite-vector systems, alterations of the behaviour of the blood-sucking arthropods result in an increase of the transmission rate, but the underlying mechanisms are elucidated in only some systems. The more sluggish movements of the Trypanosoma rangeli-infected triatomine Rhodnius prolixus might increase the rate of predation by insectivorous mammals but also the transmission rate between the triatomines via cannibalism. Alterations of the feeding behaviour by which the number of attacks on hosts by blood-sucking arthropods can be increased seem to derive from two possible mechanism

Epidemiology of Cryptosporidium molnari in Spanish gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) cultures: from hatchery to market size.

A long-term epidemiological study of Cryptosporidium molnari in aquacultured European sea bass (ESB) and gilthead sea bream (GSB) was performed in different types of facilities on the Atlantic, Cantabric, and Mediterranean coasts. Four types of studies were carried out. In study A, fish raised from juveniles to marketable size (ongrowing stage) were periodically sampled in three different types of cultures. Studies B and C focused on hatchery and nursery facilities. In study D, occasional samplings were performed during mortality or morbidity outbreaks. As a general trend, C. molnari was more

[The history and classification of human prion diseases].

INTRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT: The history of prion diseases is one of the most exciting chapters of the story of medicine in the twentieth century. It began in the nineteen twenties when Creutzfeldt (in one patient) and Jakob (in five patients) described a clinically polymorphic cerebral syndrome with a subacute or chronic course and fatal outcome. Although later reviews of these pioneer studies have cast doubt on the nosology of some of these cases, the eponym has been maintained over the years. It is even possible that the miliary sclerosis described by Gowers in the nineteenth century was i

[Considerations on locomotion activity, preference of ecotopes and territorial aspects of Phoneutria nigriventer (Keyserling, 1891), (Araneae, Ctenidae)].

Phoneutria nigriventer causes serious accidents in the south and southeastern regions of Brazil and several authors have contributed to the knowledge of its venom. The bionomics works on P. nigriventer have been done in the State of São Paulo (also in Uruguay) and they carry, almost exclusively, laboratory observations. This work was done in environmental conditions in Barra Mansa, south of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, having field and laboratory observations. Thus, it provides data on territorial behavior and preference of ecotopes of these arachnids in the region. The methodology used consi

Genetics of human prion disease.

Prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders in which an abnormal isoform of prion protein (PrPSc) accumulates in brain. Prion disease is either inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder with very high penetrance, sporadic, where no epidemiological association with other human or animal prion diseases can be demonstrated or acquired, where disease results from contamination with PrPSc from another case of prion disease. No human case of prion disease is known to have been acquired from an animal but about 50 cases have been acquired from contaminated growth hormone or gonadotrophin p

Maternal-infant transfer of influenza-specific immunity in the mouse.

The effects of maternal-infant transfer of influenza-specific antibody on influenza infection in the infant mouse were studied by following mortality, hemagglutination inhibition antibody, virus shedding from the nose and lung, and pathology of the upper and lower airway. By cross-fostering infants, influenza-specific antibody was shown to be acquired mainly by breast-feeding. Mice acquiring specific antibody survived lethal influenza infection (p less than 0.001) and had no evidence of influenza pneumonitis. There was variable suppression of nasal virus shedding and tracheal desquamation. Inf

Research note: Expert opinions of feather sucking and licking behavior in meat chicken breeder birds.

Feather sucking, or feather licking, has been reported anecdotally by employees in the Australian meat chicken breeder industry, but scarcely in the scientific literature. Consequently, the causes and implications of this behavior in meat chicken breeding chickens is relatively unknown. We surveyed 17 industry experts to generate hypotheses about feather sucking behavior. We aimed to understand the frequency and when it occurs, and attempted to understand what may cause an "outbreak". The recruitment of participants was intentionally biased towards Australian perspectives; only 5 of the 17 par

Oxidative Stress Resistance in Metastatic Prostate Cancer: Renewal by Self-Eating.

Resistant cancer phenotype is a key obstacle in the successful therapy of prostate cancer. The primary aim of our study was to explore resistance mechanisms in the advanced type of prostate cancer cells (PC-3) and to clarify the role of autophagy in these processes. We performed time-lapse experiment (48 hours) with ROS generating plumbagin by using multimodal holographic microscope. Furthermore, we also performed the flow-cytometric analysis and the qRT-PCR gene expression analysis at 12 selected time points. TEM and confocal microscopy were used to verify the results. We found out that autop

From feather pecking to immunity: Immune differences between lines selected for high and low feather pecking.

Feather pecking (FP) is a serious behavioral disorder in laying hens, leading to feather damage, skin lesions, and often resulting in cannibalism. The mechanisms underlying FP are not clear yet, but recently the role of the immune system as a cause has been discussed. In humans, the interrelation between personality traits and the immune system is well-documented, with impulsivity and hyperactivity linked to distinct alterations in blood immune cell numbers and to elevated levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Similarly, FP in hens is associated with impulsivity and hyperactivity, suggesting a

Causes of Normal Mortality in Commercial Egg-Laying Chickens.

In a large population of animals, it is normal to have some die each day from causes not related to disease, which is often referred to as natural causes. In poultry production, this phenomenon is commonly referred to as daily mortality. In egg-producing chickens, many of the natural causes of death are associated with making an egg. The causes of normal mortality in commercial egg-laying chicken flocks have been described very little to date. A commercial chicken egg farm, housing approximately two million single-comb white leghorn chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) in 16 egg-producing flock

Development of walking, swimming and neuronal connections after complete spinal cord transection in the neonatal opossum, Monodelphis domestica.

Development of coordinated movements was quantitatively assessed in adult opossums (Monodelphis domestica) with thoracic spinal cords transected by (1) crushing 7-8 d after birth [postnatal days 7-8 (P7-P8)]; at 2-3 years of age, systematic behavioral tests (e.g., climbing, footprint analysis, and swimming) showed only minor differences between control (n = 5) and operated (n = 10) animals; and (2) cutting on P4-P6; at 1 month these opossums exhibited coordinated walking movements but were unable to right themselves from a supine position, unlike controls (n = 6). When tested at 2 or 6 months,

[Evolution of viral diseases (author's transl)].

Biological characteristics of viruses determine their distribution in men and animals as well as their means of surviving or persisting. Taking measles as an example, we show that we are dealing with a recent phenomenon in evolution--as opposed, for instance, to those infections due to arboviruses (eg yellow fever) common in tropical regions. Survival rates are lower for highly virulent viruses (myxomatosis). Antigenmodification (influenza) or latency (herpes virus infections) allow the virus repeatedly to escape the body's immune system. The distribution and clinical appearance of the infecti

Oral Gavage in Neonatal Mouse Pups and Functional Assessment of Gut Barrier Integrity Using Ussing Chambers.

Growing evidence underscores the importance of the first 1,000 days of life in shaping the gut-microbiome axis. This early-life window is critical in the establishment of long-term physiological trajectories and immunological adaptations, potentially influencing susceptibility to diseases linked to dysbiosis and barrier dysfunction. A deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms requires a comprehensive assessment of key physiological parameters, including paracellular and transcellular permeability of the neonatal gut. Evaluating these parameters is essential to elucidate how early expos
