Zero valent silver nanoparticles capped with capsaicinoids containing Capsicum annuum extract, exert potent anti-biofilm effect on food borne pathogen Staphylococcus aureus and curtail planktonic growth on a zebrafish infection model.

Food plants Hungarian wax pepper (HWP) and Green Bell pepper (GBP), belonging to Capsicum annuum were utilized for biogenic fabrication of zero valent, nano-silver (AgNPs) through a photo-mediation procedure. In the bacterial strains evaluated, HWP/GBP AgNPs demonstrated effective bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect against Staphylococcus aureus. Time kill results portrayed that HWP/GBP nano-silver exhibited comparable bactericidal potency on S. aureus. Anti-biofilm potential of HWP/GBP AgNPs displayed significant effects at sub MIC levels, by triggering 50% biofilm reduction of the food sp

Endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is up-regulated during sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruit ripening. In vitro analysis shows that NADP-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) activity is inhibited by H2S and NO.

Like nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been recognized as a new gasotransmitter which plays an important role as a signaling molecule in many physiological processes in higher plants. Although fruit ripening is a complex process associated with the metabolism of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitrogen oxygen species (RNS), little is known about the potential involvement of endogenous H2S. Using sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) as a model non-climacteric fruit during the green and red ripening stages, we studied endogenous H2S content and cytosolic l-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-DE

An evolutionary view of vanillylamine synthase pAMT, a key enzyme of capsaicinoid biosynthesis pathway in chili pepper.

Pungent capsaicinoid is synthesized only in chili pepper (Capsicum spp.). The production of vanillylamine from vanillin is a unique reaction in the capsaicinoid biosynthesis pathway. Although putative aminotransferase (pAMT) has been isolated as the vanillylamine synthase gene, it is unclear how Capsicum acquired pAMT. Here, we present a phylogenetic overview of pAMT and its homologs. The Capsicum genome contained 5 homologs, including pAMT, CaGABA-T1, CaGABA-T3, and two pseudogenes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that pAMT is a member of the Solanaceae cytoplasmic GABA-Ts. Comparative genome

Chitosan oligosaccharide regulates host defense in pepper plants against cucumber mosaic virus.

The pepper plant, a member of the Solanaceae family, is widely cultivated and valued as an important spice in many dishes worldwide. Viruses cause significant damage to both the quality and quantity of pepper production, with cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) being particularly detrimental. Chitosan oligosaccharide (COS), a natural oligosaccharide derived from chitosan degradation, act as a plant immunity inducer. The present study aimed to verify the role of COS in inducing CMV resistance in capsicum and to explore its potential defense-related signaling pathways. The optimal condition for inducing

GDSL-lipase1 (CaGL1) contributes to wound stress resistance by modulation of CaPR-4 expression in hot pepper.

A full length cDNA clone encoding Capsicum annuum GDSL-lipase 1 (CaGL1) was isolated by microarray analysis. The expression of CaGL1 was triggered by methyl jasmonic acid (MeJA), an important signal in abiotic/biotic stress response. However, the expression of this gene was not increased by the application of salicylic acid (SA) or ethylene treatment. And, local/systemic wounding stimuli resulted in rapid accumulation of CaGL1 mRNA. However, CaGL1 was not specifically induced during the hypersensitive response upon Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) inoculation. By using a virus-induced gene silencing

Evolution of calyx diversity in angiosperms: a focus on transcriptomic repatterning mechanisms underlying inflated fruiting calyx within Solanaceae.

The angiosperm calyces display considerable diversity and have adaptive functions. However, the evolutionary trajectories and underlying mechanisms of calyx morphological diversity remain unclear. In this study, ancestral state reconstruction revealed that the abscised calyx was ancestral; however, most extant angiosperms exhibited persistent calyces showing notable variation in size. Remarkably, the Solanaceae family may represent a miniature reflecting the calyx diversity of angiosperms. Distinct from Solanum and Capsicum, Physalis fruits featured a morphological novelty known as inflated ca

Chickpea aquafaba-stabilised pickering-type emulsions for chilli oleoresin encapsulation: capsaicin release, bioaccessibility and cellular bioactivity following in vitro digestion.

Aquafaba (AF) from cooked British Kabuli chickpeas, containing naturally occurring nanoparticles and denatured proteins generated during cooking, was evaluated as a Pickering-type stabiliser for chilli oleoresin encapsulation and capsaicin delivery. An optimised emulsion containing 15% AF, 6.64% oil phase (1,1 oleoresin, MCT) and 78.36% water was selected due to its high physical stability. Encapsulation efficiencies exceeded 97% for both oleoresins. Particle size and ζ-potential measurements indicated stability during digestion. Low capsaicin release during oral and gastric phases suggested e
