INTRODUCTION: Chronic total occlusion (CTO) is common in the presence of other significantly narrowed coronary arteries. The impact of total occlusion and its association with completeness of revascularization on patients with multivessel disease undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) remains largely unknown.
AIM: The aim of our study was to compare CABG operation characteristics, as well as 30-day mortality, incidence of post-operative major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) between patients with and without CTO in right coronary artery (RCA).

Systemic amyloidosis is caused by the deposition of amyloid proteins in varying organ systems throughout the body, leading to dysfunction within those systems. The development of cardiac amyloidosis is one of the main indicators of poor prognosis in patients. Cardiac amyloidosis is most commonly caused by the immunoglobulin light chain amyloidosis and the transthyretin amyloidosis. Both have poor prognoses when associated with cardiac amyloidosis; however, the patients with the former subtype fair far worse than those with the latter. Despite amyloidosis having a history of being underdiagnose

Flavonoids are metabolites of plants and fungus. Flavonoid research has been paid special attention to in recent times after the observation of their beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. These favorable effects are exerted by flavonoids mainly due to their antioxidant properties, which result from the ability to decrease the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, thus improving the lipid profiles. The other positive effect exerted on the cardiovascular system is the ability of flavonoids to produce vasodilation and regulate the apoptotic processes in the endothelium. Researchers su

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and dementia are the leading causes of disability and mortality. Genetic connections between cardiovascular risk factors and dementia have not been elucidated. We conducted a scoping review and pathway analysis to reveal the genetic associations underlying both CVDs and dementia. In the PubMed database, literature was searched using keywords associated with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, white matter hyperintensities, cerebral microbleeds, and covert infarctions. Gene lists were extracted from these publications to identify shared genes and pathwa

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are an important cause of death and disease worldwide. Because injured cardiac tissue cannot be repaired itself, it is urgent to develop other alternate therapies. Stem cells can be differentiated into cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells for the treatment of CVDs. Therefore, cell therapy has recently been considered a viable treatment option that can significantly improve cardiac function. Nonetheless, implanted stem cells rarely survive in the recipient heart, suggesting that the benefits of stem cell therapy may involve other mec

Air pollution affects 90% of the world's population and has caused 9 million deaths in 2015, becoming the most important cause of premature deaths in the world. Exposure to fine particulate matter, a major component of urban air pollution, has been associated with an increase in cardiovascular risk and associated mortality. Impact of fine particles on the cardiovascular system includes inflammation, activation of prothrombotic pathways, oxidative stress, vascular dysfunction and remodeling, and neurological dysfunction. Genetic and epigenetic factors might also increase the susceptibility to a

Nutritional considerations of many chronic diseases are not fully understood or taken into consideration in everyday clinical practice. Therefore, it is not surprising that high proportion of hospitalized patients with cardiovascular diseases remains underdiagnosed with malnutrition. Malnourished patients have increased risk of poor clinical outcomes, complications rate, prolonged hospital stay, more frequent rehospitalizations, and lower quality of life. The purpose of this review is to recapitulate recent data on nutritional considerations in cardiovascular medicine.

BACKGROUND: Over the past several years, a variety of human and animal studies have shown that circadian clocks regulate biological cardiovascular rhythms in both health and disease. For example, heart rate and blood pressure fluctuate over 24-hour daily periods, such that levels are higher in the morning and progressively decline in the evening.
METHODS AND RESULTS: It is interesting to note that the timing of the administration of various cardiac treatments can also benefit some cardiovascular outcomes. Circadian rhythms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of cardiovascular

Cardiovascular diseases are top cause of mortality in the world. Current interventional therapy and pharmacotherapy may alleviate symptoms or slow disease progression but are unable to cure or treat them. Molecular and pathophysiological advances have paved the way for contemporary biological therapies to be tested and standardized for the treatment of these diseases. Stem cells therapy and gene therapy has shown promise in the treatment of CVDs. Various types of stem cells used in cardiac conditions like myocardial infarction with the aim of regenerating the damaged myocardium have had variab

First marketed in Japan in the 1990s, olprinone is a newly developed phosphodiesterase III (PDE III) inhibitor. It can not only increase cardiac contractility and also reduce peripheral vascular resistance without affecting mean arterial pressure and heart rate. At present, olprinone is mainly used in the treatment of acute heart failure and postoperative acute cardiac insufficiency. Through selectively inhibiting the activity of PDE III and increasing the concentration of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) by blocking its degradation, olprinone accelerates the influx of Ca2+ in cardiac myo

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is highly prevalent in kidney transplant recipients and is associated with poor clinical outcome. Immunosuppressive agents might affect LVH behavior after kidney transplantation. This review is an appraisal of available data regarding LVH in renal transplantation and especially of studies that evaluated LVH response to treatment. In particular, the role of mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors adopted as immunosuppressive agents in kidney transplantation is reviewed in the light of recent studies that have shown LVH regression induced by this class of medi

The vasculature is essential for proper organ function. Many pathologies are directly and indirectly related to vascular dysfunction, which causes significant morbidity and mortality. A common pathophysiological feature of diseased vessels is extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling. Analysing the protein composition of the ECM by conventional antibody-based techniques is challenging; alternative splicing or post-translational modifications, such as glycosylation, can mask epitopes required for antibody recognition. By contrast, proteomic analysis by mass spectrometry enables the study of protei

The poorest billion people are distributed throughout the world, though most are concentrated in rural sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) data can be sparse in low- and middle-income countries beyond urban centers. Despite this urban bias, CVD registries from the poorest countries have long revealed a predominance of nonatherosclerotic stroke, hypertensive heart disease, nonischemic and Chagas cardiomyopathies, rheumatic heart disease, and congenital heart anomalies, among others. Ischemic heart disease has been relatively uncommon. Here, we summarize what is known

Gap junctions (GJs) channels provide the basis for intercellular communication in the cardiovascular system for maintenance of the normal cardiac rhythm, regulation of vascular tone and endothelial function as well as metabolic interchange between the cells. They allow the transfer of small molecules and may enable slow calcium wave spreading, transfer of "death" or of "survival" signals. In the cardiomyocytes the most abundant isoform is Connexin 43 (Cx43). Alterations in Cx43 expression and distribution were observed in myocardium disease; i.e. in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, heart failure a

Many investigations suggest the pivotal role of sphingolipids in the pathogenesis of lifestyle diseases such as myocardial infarction, hypertension, stroke, diabetes mellitus type 2 and obesity. Some studies suggest that sphingolipids are important factors in cellular signal transduction. They serve as biologically active components of cell membrane and are involved in many processes such as proliferation, maturation and apoptosis. Recently, ceramide and sphingosine-1-phosphate have become the target of many investigations. Ceramide is generated in three metabolic pathways and many factors ind

Recent evidence would indicate that high serum uric acid (SUA) levels can be a significant and independent risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and heart failure. In the last few years an independent risk relationship between hyperuricemia, cardiovascular disease and mortality has also been reported. Hyperuricemia has been shown as an independent risk factor for acute myocardial infarction and an independent and conjoint association of either gout and SUA with total and cardiovascular mortality has been reported, with mortality impact in gout

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening event in which the cardiovascular system is responsible for the majority of clinical symptoms and for potentially fatal outcome. This review summarizes the most recent clinical and experimental data on cardiovascular involvement during anaphylaxis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Great efforts have been made in the last few years to understand the pathophysiology of anaphylactic reaction and to provide better identification of risk factors for the development of this reaction. Coronary blood flow can be impaired during anaphylaxis, which may significantly

OBJECTIVES: This article discusses the results of clinical and experimental studies that examine the association of hyperuricemia and gout with cardiovascular (CV) disease.
METHODS: Key papers for inclusion were identified by a PubMed search, and articles were selected for their relevance to the topic, according to the authors' judgment.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Significant progress has been made in confirming an association, possibly causal, between hyperuricemia and CV outcomes. Xantine-oxidase (XO) inhibitors appear to be the most promising agents for prevention and treatment of CV conseq

Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are becoming major health concerns for adults with inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The enhanced atherogenesis in this patient population is promoted by the exposure to traditional risk factors as well as nontraditional cardiovascular insults, such as corticosteroid therapy, chronic inflammation and autoantibodies. Despite definite differences between many adult-onset and pediatric-onset rheumatologic diseases, it is extremely likely that atherosclerosis will become the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in this pediatric patient population. Because
