[Clinical characteristics of biliary tract infection and acalculous cholecystitis after cardiovascular surgery].

Biliary tract infection (BTI) including acalculous cholecystitis is a rare but life-threatening complication after cardiovascular surgery. The objective of our study was to describe epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and risk factors of BTI after cardiovascular surgery. From January 2007 to December 2011, 586 consecutive patients(age68±11;397 men,189 women)were enrolled in this study. BTI was diagnosed according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) surveillance criteria for healthcare associated infection. Data collection included preoperative, intraoperative, and post-oper

Lower adiponectin is associated with subclinical cardiovascular disease among HIV-infected men.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether altered levels of adipokines, adipose-derived peptides associated with myocardial infarction in the general population, may contribute to subclinical coronary atherosclerosis in HIV-infected persons. DESIGN: Nested cohort study. METHODS: We studied HIV-infected (HIV+) and HIV-uninfected (HIV-) men in the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study with noncontrast computed tomography (CT) to measure coronary artery calcium and regional adiposity; 75% additionally underwent coronary CT angiography to measure plaque composition and stenosis. Adiponectin and leptin levels were a

Can a chronic dental infection be considered a cause of cardiovascular disease? A review of the literature.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have a complex etiology determined by risk factors, which are in turn associated to a strong genetic component and to environmental factors. In the biological background for the development of CVD, low-grade chronic inflammation plays a role as a pathogenetic determinant of atherosclerosis. Dental infections have been associated with CVD. Periodontal disease is a chronic infection of the supporting tissues of the tooth that can lead to teeth loss. In recent years, a number of reports have demonstrated the possible relationship between periodontal disease and CVD.

Inflammatory/cardiovascular-metabolic responses in a rat model of burn injury with superimposed infection.

Infection remains the major cause of morbidity and mortality in burn patients. Furthermore, the use of antibiotics in such patients has led to the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant microbial infections; one such infection in intensive care unit turns out to be caused by the enterococcal organisms. Our laboratory studies have used a rat model of bum injury and Enterococcus faecalis infection. Sprague-Dawley male rats ( approximately 250 g) were initially given an intragastric gavage of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin for 3 days. This procedure allowed for decontamination of intestine of gram-nega

Hypertension in HIV-1-infected patients and its impact on renal and cardiovascular integrity.

BACKGROUND: With increasing life spans of HIV-infected individuals under highly active antiretroviral therapy, long-term consequences of the chronic infection and antiretroviral treatment are becoming more prevalent. Data on prevalence and consequences of hypertension are limited, but recent studies suggest that HIV-infected individuals are at a higher risk of developing hypertension. METHODS: In this prospective study, HIV-1-infected patients from the Frankfurt AIDS Cohort Study (FACS) were followed for 1 year to determine the frequency of systemic hypertension and to assess the associated c

Metabolic disorders and cardiovascular risk in HIV-infected patients treated with antiretroviral agents.

The clinical management of HIV-infected individuals is based on highly active antiretroviral combination therapy, which provides significant clinical benefit in most patients, but causes in a high proportion of them a metabolic syndrome that includes body fat redistribution, hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and insulin resistance. These effects are particularly evident in patients treated with protease inhibitors. It is likely that the metabolic disorders related to anti-HIV treatment will eventually translate into an increased cardiovascular risk in patients submitted to such regim

Systemic effects of sunlight: 10-year review of cardiovascular, infection and cancer outcomes.

Sunlight is an important environmental determinant of human physiology, though its effects on health have been studied predominantly in the context of skin disease. While ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a well-established risk factor for skin cancer, evidence suggests that it may also have beneficial systemic effects. This narrative review synthesizes evidence from the past decade on the associations between sunlight and UV radiation exposure and mortality-related outcomes, with a focus on internal malignancies, cardiovascular disease and infectious diseases. Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection is linked to increases in cardiovascular events post exacerbation in bronchiectasis.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PsA) infection contributes to disease progression in bronchiectasis (BE), particularly exacerbations which are known to increase the risk of cardiovascular (CV) events. However, the link between PsA infection and CV events in BE is unknown. Thus, we investigated whether there is an association between PsA airway infection and the risk of CV events post-exacerbation. METHODS: This was a US retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX platform between 2008 and 2019. Adult patients with (wPsA) or without (w/oPsA) PsA airway infection were included. Date of f

Recurrent Neisseria cinerea bacteremia secondary to cardiovascular implantable electronic device infection.

We present the first case of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) infection due to Neisseria cinerea in a 64-year-old woman from Panama. She had a history of splenectomy, aortic valve stenosis requiring transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), and permanent pacemaker placement. She presented with relapsing N. cinerea bacteremia over a 3-month period. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed a lead vegetation in the superior vena cava. She was successfully treated with pacemaker removal and 2 weeks of IV antibiotic therapy. N. cinerea is an aerobic gram-negative commensal diploco

The Effects of Human Papillomavirus Infection and Vaccination on Cardiovascular Diseases, NHANES 2003-2016.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been proposed to be an unconventional risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. We investigated the association between HPV infection and cardiovascular diseases among women with or without HPV vaccination. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 9,353 women aged between 20 to 59 years old who were tested for vaginal HPV DNA in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2016. Cardiovascular diseases were defined as the presence of self-reported coronary heart diseases, heart attacks, angina pectoris, and stroke.

Triggering of cardiovascular disease by infection type: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study (ARIC).

INTRODUCTION: Acute infections are known triggers of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but how this association varies across infection types is unknown. We hypothesized while acute infections increase CVD risk, the strength of this association varies across infection types. METHOD: Acute coronary heart disease (CHD) and ischemic stroke cases were identified in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC). ICD-9 codes from Medicare claims were used to identify cellulitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTI), and bloodstream infections. A case-crossover design and conditional logistic

Patterns of Cardiovascular Mortality for HIV-Infected Adults in the United States: 1999 to 2013.

With widespread availability and the use of antiretroviral therapy, patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the United States are living long enough to experience non-AIDS-defining illnesses. HIV is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) because of traditional CVD risk factors, residual virally mediated inflammation despite HIV treatment, and side effects of antiretroviral therapy. No United States population-wide studies have evaluated patterns of CVD mortality for HIV-infected subjects. Our central hypothesis was that the proportionate mortality from C

Lipid metabolism and cardiovascular risk in HIV infection: new perspectives and the role of nevirapine.

Effective antiretroviral regimens allow patients to successfully manage their HIV infection for decades. Both HIV infection and treatment elevate the incidence and progression of cardiovascular disease, as evidenced by higher rates of myocardial infarction. Traditional cardiovascular disease risk factors, including elevated serum lipids, lipoprotein and triglyceride levels, hypertension, and smoking, may play a role. In addition, factors directly related to HIV infection (chronic inflammation and persistent immune activation due to viral replication) further elevate risk, while some antiretrov
