The Impact of COVID-19 on the Cardiovascular System.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) induces coronavirus-19 disease (COVID-19), has affected many people in Brazil and worldwide. This disease predominantly affects the organs of the respiratory system, but it also damages the brain, liver, kidneys and especially the heart. In the heart, scientific evidence shows that this virus can damage the coronary arteries, generating microvascular dysfunction, favoring acute myocardial infarction. Furthermore, with the increased expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, it can lead to myocarditis and cardiac fibrosis, inducing

Homocysteine and Mitochondria in Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Systems.

Elevated concentration of homocysteine (Hcy) in the blood plasma, hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy), has been implicated in various disorders, including cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Accumulating evidence indicates that pathophysiology of these diseases is linked with mitochondrial dysfunction. In this review, we discuss the current knowledge concerning the effects of HHcy on mitochondrial homeostasis, including energy metabolism, mitochondrial apoptotic pathway, and mitochondrial dynamics. The recent studies suggest that the interaction between Hcy and mitochondria is complex, and

Effects of Alcohol on the Cardiovascular System in Women.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality for women. This review summarizes the relationship between alcohol consumption and common CVDs in women and highlights potential differences from men. Except for risk of hypertension, no sex-related effects of alcohol consumption on the risk for coronary heart disease and stroke have been reported, and data on the sex-related effects on risk for peripheral arterial disease are limited. For women, alcohol consumption has a J-shaped relationship with hypertension. About 1 to 2 standard drinks per day is associated with lo

Glucocorticoids and the cardiovascular system: state of the art.

Glucocorticoids (GC) are drugs commonly used, by approximately 1% of the total adult population as anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive therapies for asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, dermatological, ophthalmic, neurological, and rheumatic autoimmune diseases. Supporting evidence exists of GC use in both immune mediated and non-immune mediated heart disease. The molecular mechanisms by which GC induces immune-modulation and direct cardioprotection, are complex and not fully understood. We review herein, the current knowledge of GC use in various immune-mediated or non-immune mediated card

The acute effects of capsaicin on the cardiovascular system.

Arterial blood pressure and heart rate were recorded from male Wistar rats anaesthetized with urethane. Intravenous injection of capsaicin, 1 microgram, produced a reproducible triphasic effect on blood pressure, comprising an initial fall in blood pressure and heart rate, followed by a transient and then a sustained pressor response. The depressor response and bradycardia were abolished by vagal section. The transient pressor response was altered in shape by hexamethonium. Slow intravenous infusion of capsaicin, 50 micrograms over 12 min, produced only a sustained pressor response accompanied

The effect of hypocarbia on the cardiovascular system of puppies.

Respiratory alkalosis (hypocapnia) is used to treat persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns. With the exception of the brain, there are no data on the effects of hypocapnia on organ blood flow in the neonate. Therefore, we examined the effects of 2 h of hypocapnia on blood pressure, oxygen consumption, cardiac output and organ blood flows in puppies. In six animals (group I), reducing the PaCO2 to 21.8 +/- 1.5 mm Hg (pH 7.62 +/- 0.04) caused an immediate and sustained reduction in cerebral blood flow (40%) and in myocardial blood flow (25%). There were no significant changes in arterial

Autonomic nervous system control of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems in asthma.

Patients with asthma have exaggerated bronchoconstriction of their airways in response to certain indirect (e.g. cold air, allergens, dust, exercise) or direct (e.g. inhaled methacholine) stimuli. This 'hyper-reactivity' usually co-exists with airway inflammation, although the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these changes are not fully understood. It is likely that this hyper-reactivity is associated with abnormal autonomic nervous system (ANS) control. In particular, the parasympathetic (vagal) component of the ANS appears to be implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma. In addition,

Update: systemic diseases and the cardiovascular system (i): obesity and the heart.

Excess weight is the most prevalent cardiovascular risk factor and certainly the factor that improves the least over time among those with established cardiovascular disease. The association between obesity and cardiovascular disease is complex and not limited to the standard risk factors like hypertension, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In recent years, multiple studies have shown that obesity may cause cardiovascular diseases via multiple disease mechanisms like subclinical inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, increased sympathetic tone, atherogenic lipid profiles, enhanced th

Roles of central orexinergic system on cardiovascular function and acupuncture on intervention of cardiovascular risk: Orexinergic system mediate the role of acupuncture?

Central orexinergic system contributes to the regulation of cardiovascular function. Orexinergic neurons receiving projections of nerve fibers from multiple structures of brain which involved in control and regulation of cardiovascular function locate in hypothalamus, and their axon terminals widely project to various central structures where orexins receptors are expressed. Here, we summarize the present knowledge that describes the influence of central orexinergic system on cardiovascular activity, the relevance of dysfunction in central orexinergic system with hypertension and psychological

Dysregulation of the Renin-Angiotensin System and the Vasopressinergic System Interactions in Cardiovascular Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In many instances, the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) and the vasopressinergic system (VPS) are jointly activated by the same stimuli and engaged in the regulation of the same processes. RECENT FINDINGS: Angiotensin II (Ang II) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), which are the main active compounds of the RAS and the VPS, interact at several levels. Firstly, Ang II, acting on AT1 receptors (AT1R), plays a significant role in the release of AVP from vasopressinergic neurons and AVP, stimulating V1a receptors (V1aR), regulates the release of renin in the kidney. Secondly, Ang II

Can a Cardiovascular Scoring System be Used to Determine Cardiovascular Disease in Pediatric Dialysis Patients?

We created a two scoring systems for pediatric dialysis patients to determine the presence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) which are referred to as (CVDS)-1 and CVDS-2. We included 25 patients on hemodialysis (n = 19) and peritoneal dialysis (n = 6). CVDS-1 and CVDS-2 use multiple parameters, to determine the presence of CVD in pediatric dialysis patients. The scoring systems include renal pathology, nutrition, dialysis adequacy, residual urine output, protein catabolism, dialysis modality and some laboratory values. CVD evaluations included the left ventricular mass index, pulse wave velocity

From liver to cardiovascular system: the MASLD-ASCVD continuum.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver disease worldwide and is increasingly recognized as a systemic cardiometabolic disorder. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) represents the leading cause of mortality in patients with MASLD. This review aims to summarize current evidence on the epidemiology, pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical impact of MASLD on cardiovascular outcomes. We reviewed epidemiological studies, mechanistic investigations, imaging-based analyses, and large population-based cohorts evaluating the as

Cardiovascular system characteristics in HIV/AIDS patients with talaromycosis.

Patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) are more vulnerable to opportunistic infections (OIs) such as Talaromycosis marneffei (TSM), which is associated with a high mortality rate. Nevertheless, the effect of TSM on the cardiovascular system of affected patients remains elusive. To that end, this research aimed to investigate the impact of TSM on the cardiovascular system in the individuals with HIV/AIDS. Participants were assigned to the HIV/AIDS patients group or the HIV/AIDS patients with TSM (HIV/AIDS+TSM) group. A total of 120 individuals were included in the present stud

The Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS): Beyond Cardiovascular Regulation.

The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays a pivotal role in regulating cardiovascular function, fluid balance, and blood pressure. Recent research has revealed the RAAS's influence extends beyond cardiovascular physiology, encompassing key roles in inflammation, fibrosis, immune regulation, cancer progression, and organ-specific disease mechanisms. This review provides a comprehensive overview of classical and alternative RAAS pathways, focusing on the dual roles of angiotensin II (Ang II) and angiotensin-(1-7) (Ang 1-7), mediated through AT1R, AT2R, MasR, and MrgD receptors. We di

Incretins and the cardiovascular system: bridging digestion with metabolism.

The mechanisms driving the cardiovascular and renal benefits of therapies targeting intestinal hormones in type 2 diabetes are still not fully understood. We propose that incretin hormones-glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP)-act as a critical link connecting digestion, metabolism, and cardiovascular function, supporting physiological adaptations to nutrient intake. Incretin hormones help regulate blood flow and cardiac activity, enhancing nutrient absorption while protecting the heart and vessels. After meals, incretin hormones promote vasodilatio

Clinical Potential of Adrenomedullin Signaling in the Cardiovascular System.

Numerous clinical studies have revealed the utility of circulating AM (adrenomedullin) or MR-proAM (mid-regional proAM 45-92) as an effective prognostic and diagnostic biomarker for a variety of cardiovascular-related pathophysiologies. Thus, there is strong supporting evidence encouraging the exploration of the AM-CLR (calcitonin receptor-like receptor) signaling pathway as a therapeutic target. This is further bolstered because several drugs targeting the shared CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide)-CLR pathway are already Food and Drug Administration-approved and on the market for the trea
