INTRODUCTION: International travellers contribute to the rapid spread of Zika virus (ZIKV) and its sentinel identification globally. We describe ZIKV infections among international travellers seen at GeoSentinel sites with a focus on ZIKV acquired in the Americas and the Caribbean, describe countries of exposure and traveller characteristics, and assess ZIKV diagnostic testing by site.
METHODS: Records with an international travel-related diagnosis of confirmed or probable ZIKV from January 2012 through December 2019 reported to GeoSentinel with a recorded illness onset date were included to

Introduction: Although international health research involves some benefits for the host countries, such as access to innovative treatments, the research itself may not be aligned with their communities' actual health needs. Objective: To map the global landscape of clinical trials run in Latin American and Caribbean countries and discuss the addressing of local health needs in the agenda of international clinical trials. Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional overview and used data referent to studies registered between 01/01/2014 and 12/31/2014 in the World Health Organization's (WH

Rabies virus is the only Lyssavirus species found in the Americas. In discussions about rabies, Latin America and the Caribbean are often grouped together. Our study aimed to independently analyse the rabies situation in the Caribbean and examine changes in rabies spatiotemporal epidemiology. A questionnaire was administered to the 33 member countries and territories of the Caribbean Animal Health Network (CaribVET) to collect current data, which was collated with a literature review. Rabies was endemic in ten Caribbean localities, with the dog, mongoose, and vampire bat identified as enzootic

Military records make it possible to study the cause of death of British and French soldiers in West Africa and the Caribbean between about 1819 and 1914. These records are significant because they trace the quantitative pattern of immunity, or lack of it, among soldiers recruited in one region and serving in another. In the Caribbean, a childhood Caribbean disease environment produced no greater immunity to malaria than childhood in the British isles did. Childhood in West Africa, however, produced a degree of immunity to malaria is the Caribbean. For soldiers whose childhood disease environm

Coral reefs are crucial habitats for many fish species because they serve as feeding and shelter sites. However, due to their sensitivity to environmental changes, reef degradation has led to a drastic decline in fish and reef assemblages, which has also been reflected in associated economic activities. The loss of branching corals Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis has reached up to 90% in the Colombian Caribbean, resulting in a reduction in the abundance and diversity of associated fish populations. During two time periods (2011-2012 and 2023-2024) across the Colombian Caribbean, fish assoc

Informal caregivers are central to dementia care in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), yet determinants of caregiver burden remain insufficiently characterized. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies examining patient- and caregiver-related correlates of burden in LAC. Random-effects models pooled Fisher's z-transformed correlations. Forty studies were included, of which 34 (n = 3,082 caregivers) were meta-analyzed. Higher burden was associated with the patient's neuropsychiatric and depressive symptoms, and caregiver depressive and anxiety symptoms. Better patient c

Recurrent inundations of holopelagic Sargassum spp. have been arriving to the Mexican Caribbean coast since 2014. The "Sargassum brown tides", murky coastal waters resulting from the decay of massive beached accumulations of this macroalga, reduce water quality, increase organic matter in sediments, and cause mortality of nearshore seagrass and fauna in reef lagoons. To examine the potential effects of Sargassum brown tides on seagrass-associated motile macroinvertebrates, we analyzed the diversity and community composition of this epifauna and the vegetation in the Puerto Morelos reef lagoon,

BACKGROUND: Nurses are central to cancer care for children and adolescents, yet no comprehensive synthesis has defined essential core competencies for pediatric oncology nursing (PON) practice internationally, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). This scoping review mapped and synthesized evidence on PON competencies relevant to clinical practice, education, and research in LAC settings.
METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses-extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) guidance, we searched M

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune neurological disease. NMOSD is more common in non-Caucasian populations, with some Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) populations having some of the highest reported prevalences globally. Previous research suggests that populations in the LAC region may present with distinctive clinical and paraclinical features. However, despite these potential population-specific differences, such characteristics remain poorly defined and understudied.
METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines and the PROSPERO registration (CRD420245

Upon their arrival in the water column, coral larvae use physical and chemical cues to navigate toward a suitable habitat and begin their settlement process. To engineer substrates that influence settlement, it is important to have quantitative data about the types and concentrations of chemicals that elicit desired behavioral responses before and after contact with the substrate. Here, we quantified the behavioral and morphological responses of coral larvae (Colpophyllia natans and Orbicella faveolata) to crustose coralline algae exudates (CCA) and ions found in coral skeletons using chemotac

Among the least explored yet highly relevant aspects of wildlife health are host-endoparasite interactions, particularly those involving helminths with zoonotic potential. Carnivores are known reservoirs of several such parasites. This study investigates the diversity of gastrointestinal helminths in small carnivores (Mammalia: Carnivora) inhabiting a tropical dry forest ecosystem in the Colombian Caribbean. A total of 60 fecal samples were collected from five species-Cerdocyon thous, Leopardus pardalis, Procyon spp., Eira barbara, and Puma yagouaroundi-within the Sanguaré Natural Reserve (Suc

Despite evidence that certain diseases of marine wildlife are increasing, long-term infection data are often lacking. Archived samples of hosts from natural history collections offer a powerful tool for evaluating temporal changes in parasitism. Using vouchered fish collections from the Southern Caribbean, we investigated long-term (1905-2022) shifts in infections by the trematode Scaphanocephalus spp., which causes black spot syndrome (BSS) in reef fishes. Examination of 190 museum-preserved fishes from Curaçao and Bonaire revealed that Scaphanocephalus infections are not new, with histologic

BACKGROUND: Dengue is currently a global concern. The range of dengue vectors is expanding with climate change, yet United States of America (USA) studies on dengue epidemiology and burden are limited. This systematic review sought to characterize the epidemiology and disease burden of dengue within the USA.
METHODS: Studies evaluating travel-related and endemic dengue in US states and territories were identified and qualitatively summarized. Commentaries and studies on ex-US cases were excluded. MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Latin American and Caribbean Center of Health Sciences Informa

We aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with gaming disorder (GD) in the population of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). A systematic review was performed (PROSPERO protocol registration: CRD42021230565). We included studies that identified participants with GD and/or factors associated with this condition, reported the prevalence of GD, or contained data that assisted in its estimation, were published after 2013 (the year of inclusion of GD in the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and were carried out in a population residing

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) disproportionately affects low-income and middle-income countries. Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have been less represented in scientific literature. We aimed to describe the epidemiology, burden and implemented screening and prevention strategies of RHD in LAC.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, LILACS, and SciELO from 1990 to April 2021. Observational and experimental studies that described data on the epidemiology, burden, or prevention/screening strategies of RHD, regardless of age or language, were included. The risk of b

Least developed countries (LDCs) are home to over a billion people throughout Africa, Asia-Pacific, and the Caribbean. The people who live in LDCs represent just 13% of the global population but 40% of its growth rate. Characterised by low incomes and low education levels, high proportions of the population practising subsistence living, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of economic diversity and resilience, LDCs face serious health, environmental, social, and economic challenges. Many communities in LDCs have very limited access to adequate sanitation, safe water, and clean cooking fuel. LD

Over the last century anthropogenic activities have rapidly increased the influx of metals and metalloids entering the marine environment, which can bioaccumulate and biomagnify in marine top consumers. This may elicit sublethal effects on target organisms, having broad implications for human seafood consumers. We provide the first assessment of metal (Cd, Pb, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, and THg) and metalloid (As) concentrations in the muscle tissue of coastal sharks from The Bahamas. A total of 36 individual sharks from six species were evaluated, spanning two regions/study areas, with a foc
