High-Throughput Microscale MOF Catalysis via Solid Dispersion Reactor Dosing.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit exceptional structural diversity and tunable chemical environments, offering excellent opportunities for tuning the selectivity of catalytic centers confined to their pores. As such, MOF catalysts have been shown to exhibit distinct size-, regio-, and chemoselectivity relative to those of other heterogeneous platforms. Despite these advantages, the discovery and optimization of highly active and selective MOF catalysts for complex transformations remain challenging. Their poor solubility, low bulk density, and mechanical fragility complicate their integr

Bromine-Promoted Tandem Catalysis for C2+ Production from CO2 Electroreduction.

Renewable energy-driven electrochemical CO2 reduction holds promise to upgrade CO2 into high-value-added multicarbon fuels and chemicals. However, achieving satisfactory selectivity on Cu catalysts poses a grand challenge because of the sluggish C─C coupling and competitive balance between adsorbed intermediates. Herein, in this work, a distinct type of bromine-mediated Ag─Cu heterogeneous tandem catalyst, is rationally designed by integrating synergistic sites to promote enhanced *CO accumulation and its protonation for subsequent coupling for C2+ synthesis. Within this tandem system, AgBr mo

Antioxidant functionalization of pullulan with ferulic acid using enzymatic catalysis.

Antioxidant polysaccharides were synthesized using an innovative, green, enzymatic reaction to catalyze the grafting of ferulic acid (FA) onto pullulan (Pull). Several grades of Pull-FA with verified purity were successfully synthesized, with maximum experimental grafting rates (GR) up to 8.8%, as determined by the Folin Ciocalteu method. For the first time, the chemical structure of the grafts was proposed using 13C solid-state NMR and MALDI-TOF MS analyses, which proposed the putative grafting of a negatively charged, monodecarboxylated FA dimer (β-5). SEC/MALS/DRI/UV/visco analyses confirme

Exceptionally Fast Heterogeneous Catalysis Using Perovskite Nanocrystals for Hydrocarbon Aromatization.

Heterogeneous catalysis, though often slower than homogeneous catalysis due to mass transfer and adsorption limitations, is favored in industry for its facile separation, reusability, and scalability. Overcoming heterogeneous limitations demands innovative catalyst architectures and reaction designs. Here we report a lead halide perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystal (NC) heterogeneous catalytic system that achieves exceptionally fast hydrocarbon aromatization, with turnover frequencies (TOFs) up to 6.5 s-1 per Cs, or up to 11.1 mol/kg/s, enabling kilograms of benzene formation from cyclohexene with m

Access to four-membered cyclic sulfinamides by energy transfer catalysis.

Synthetic transformations that advance through excited states proceed by unconventional mechanistic pathways and deliver products not accessible using ground-state chemistry. The breadth of these synthetically valuable transformations is constrained by the range of molecules-and particularly the functional groups-that can deliver productive excited states, with most methods using the same functional groups that were defined more than 100 years ago. In this work, we show that N-silyl sulfinylamines can undergo synthetically useful excited-state reactivity accessed using energy transfer catalyst

Synergistic Fe/Ni catalysis for electrochemical 1,1-difunctionalization of alkenes.

Alkene 1,1-difunctionalization holds significant importance in organic synthesis due to its ability to effectively enhance the complexity and functionality of molecular frameworks. Herein, we report an electrochemical strategy for 1,1-difunctionalization of halogenated aromatics with unactivated alkenes using synergistic Fe/Ni catalysis. This system integrates redox activity of nickel with Lewis acid functionality of iron: the nickel catalyst governs aryl halide oxidative addition and alkene migration, while iron species activates catalytic sites, stabilizes radical acceptors, and precisely re

Solvent-Controlled Divergent Catalysis toward the Synthesis of Fluvastatin Analogs.

A solvent-controlled, divergent Rh(III)-catalyzed strategy enables the synthesis of structurally diverse fluvastatin analogs. Enantioenriched α,β-unsaturated ketones derived from 2-deoxy-d-ribose undergo selective C2-H functionalization of indoles, affording olefination or hydroarylation products under complementary conditions. The method shows broad scope and functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies indicate a solvent-driven switch between β-hydride elimination and protodemetalation, providing rapid access to both enantiomeric series of fluvastatin-inspired scaffolds.

Stereoelectronically Controlled Regioselective Allylation of Aldehyde Under Photoredox/Chromium Catalysis.

The formation of structurally defined α,γ-disubstituted allylmetallic intermediate which could undergo regioselective allylation with carbonyl compounds remains a formidable challenge in synthetic chemistry. Although regioselective in situ formation of α,γ-disubstituted allylchromium intermediate controlled by coordinative directing groups has been achieved, how to achieve high selectivity for reactions involving α,γ-disubstituted allylic chromium intermediates through electronic control has been elusive. In this study, we report a silyl-group-directed strategy that exploits the α-silicon effe

Sigma hole donor XB and ChB catalysis in oligosaccharide synthesis.

Sigma hole-based noncovalent interactions (NCIs), such as halogen bonding (XB) and chalcogen bonding (ChB), offer a powerful alternative to hydrogen bonding (HB) in stereoselective catalysis. The high directionality and tunability of these catalysts have been harnessed to facilitate more efficient glycosylation processes under mild conditions. Recent advances highlight the significant yet underexplored potential of these interactions, paving the way for novel and improved catalytic strategies in carbohydrate chemistry with unique activation modes.

Advancing Oxygen Evolution Catalysis with Dual-Phase Nickel Sulfide Nanostructures.

The production, conversion and storage of energy based on electrocatalysis, mainly assisted by oxygen evolution reaction (OER), plays a crucial role in alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs) and fuel cells. Nevertheless, the insufficient availability of highly efficient catalyst materials at a reasonable cost that overcome the sluggish electrochemical kinetics of the OER is one of the significant obstacles. Herein, we report a fast and facile synthesis of vapor phase deposition of dual-phase nickel sulfide (Ni-sulfide) using low-temperature annealing in the presence of H2S and demonstrated as an

Attractive Noncovalent Interactions versus Steric Confinement in Asymmetric Supramolecular Catalysis.

The remarkable catalytic performance of enzymes stems from their ability to engage in precise noncovalent interactions (NCIs) within a sterically confined space. Supramolecular catalysis seeks to emulate and understand these strategies through the rational design of simple and controlled catalyst microenvironments. While both steric confinement and attractive interactions have been invoked as key to host activity, their relative contribution to rate enhancement and selectivity, as well as potential trade-offs, remains an outstanding question. Here, we address this question by systematically co

Dynamic interface catalysis and carbon dioxide reduction of liquid metals.

Liquid metal (LM) catalysis has been demonstrated to have obvious potential in the fields of energy conversion and environmental catalysis due to its unique dynamic interface, adjustable electronic structure and regenerative ability of active sites. Compared with traditional solid-state catalysts, the atomic-level degrees of freedom and fluidity of typical gallium-based LMs exhibit advantages such as anti-poisoning, interface self-repair, and dynamic regulation of reaction pathways. Based on the fundamental characteristics and mechanisms of LM catalysis, this work systematically expounds the p

Enantioselective Alkyl-Acyl Radical Cross-Coupling Enabled by Metallaphotoredox Catalysis.

Radical-radical cross-coupling (RCC) offers a promising approach for carbon-carbon bond formation in organic synthesis, particularly for creating complex, three-dimensional molecules. However, achieving both cross- and enantioselectivity in RCC reactions has remained a significant challenge. Here, we report a novel metallaphotoredox platform that enables highly enantioselective decarboxylative coupling of carboxylic acid derivatives with aldehydes. Our strategy leverages independent control over radical generation and subsequent enantioselective bond formation through fine-tuning of a common p

Nanozeolite-Driven Gear-Catalysis Enabling Sequential Methanol-to-Aromatics Conversion.

Controlling diffusion and elementary reaction pathways to achieve high selectivity and stability has been a long-standing challenge in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we develop a "gear-catalyst" system that spatially and kinetically decouples the methanol-to-aromatics (MTA) reaction into two sequential steps: methanol-to-olefins and olefins-to-aromatics. We show that nanoZSM-5 (high Si/Al ratio, ∼100 nm particle size) serves as a highly efficient smaller "gear" for rapid olefin generation and accelerated mass transfer, while micrometer-sized Zn-exchanged ZSM-5 (Zn/Z5) acts as the larger "gear"

Palladium-free Wacker-inspired oxidation: challenges and opportunities in catalysis.

Palladium-catalysed Wacker-type oxidation of olefins to ketones or aldehydes is one of the most prominent homogeneous reactions globally, even performed at a multi-tonne scale. From a fundamental and an applied point of view, it is extremely appealing to replace palladium catalysts by other metal-based catalysts to increase the efficiency, selectivity and sustainability, particularly considering the reactivity of well-defined first-row transition metal complexes as catalysts. In this case, the ligand(s) coordinating to the metal(s) play a major role in controlling selectivity and activity, tha
