Fatty acid profile in hepatic tissue of farmed and wild channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).

Desmopressin, a synthetic antidiuretic hormone analogue, is the only drug currently approved for the treatment of nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria or multiple sclerosis (MS). Compared with vasopressin, desmopressin has a longer lasting and more potent antidiuretic effect and is devoid of vasopressor and uterotonic effects. In two large, randomised, double-blind phase III trials in adults with nocturia associated with nocturnal polyuria, 3 weeks of oral desmopressin therapy was significantly more effective than placebo in reducing the mean number of nocturnal voids and in normalising

Evaluation of the Dietary Arginine Supplementation on Yellow Catfish: From a Low-Temperature Farming Perspective.

The yellow catfish is an economically significant freshwater fish with increasing importance in aquaculture. However, the low temperature environments prevalent in certain regions pose challenges to its growth, development, and overall health. This study aimed to explore the impact of dietary arginine (Arg) addition on the growth, digestive capacity, and intestinal antioxidant response in fish under low temperature acclimation (18 °C). Total 720 fish were randomly distributed into six groups, each containing 120 fish. Over the course of eight weeks, each group was fed with diets about varying

Enhancing farmed striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) robustness through dietary β-glucan.

β-glucan is a well-documented feed additive for its potent immunostimulatory properties in many farmed fish species. This study examined how it can also be a promising growth promoter, modulate antioxidant enzyme activities, and act as an anti-stress agent in striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus). A 12-week feeding experiment was untaken to determine the effects of dietary β-glucan supplementation at graded levels (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g kg-1). Measured indicators suggest that a dietary inclusion level of 1.5 g kg-1 β-glucan gave the highest positive responses: weight gain (120.10 g fi

Combinations of cypermethrin and dimethoate alter behavior, hematology and histology of African Catfish, Clarias gariepinus.

Cypermethrin and dimethoate are pesticides frequently used in agriculture to eliminate pests. Contemporaneity of these and other pesticides in commercial preparations and several aquatic ecosystems is well known, though poorly studied. This study aims to evaluate the effect of sublethal concentrations of combinations of cypermethrin and dimethoate on juvenile catfish, Clarias gariepinus, given that the pesticides concomitantly occur in the floodplains were the fish breed. Behavioral, hematological and histopathological changes in juvenile fish exposed to sublethal concentrations were monitored

Nanopore metatranscriptomics reveals cryptic catfish species as potential Shigella flexneri vectors in Kenya.

Bacteria in the Shigella genus remain a major cause of dysentery in sub-Saharan Africa, and annually cause an estimated 600,000 deaths worldwide. Being spread by contaminated food and water, this study highlights how wild caught food, in the form of freshwater catfish, can act as vectors for Shigella flexneri in Southern Kenya. A metatranscriptomic approach was used to identify the presence of Shigella flexneri in the catfish which had been caught for consumption from the Galana river. The use of nanopore sequencing was shown to be a simple and effective method to highlight the presence of Shi

Sublethal effects of triclosan and triclocarban at environmental concentrations in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) embryos.

Although banished in some countries, triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) have been detected in surface waters in concentrations ranging from ng L-1 to μg L-1 and have shown to affect non-target organisms posing risk to aquatic ecosystems. However, the majority of the studies consider higher levels of these chemicals and single exposure effects to investigate their potential risks, rather than using environmentally relevant concentrations and their binary mixture. In this study, the toxicity of TCS and TCC, and their binary mixture was assessed in catfish embryos (Rhamdia quelen, a south Ame

Optimization of artificial insemination outcomes of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) with differing hatchery conditions.

The African catfish is one of the most promising warm-freshwater species for aquaculture development in the upcoming years, although there are two primary limitations in its production: less-than-desirable survival rates and low larvae quality. In this study, a novel method of egg fertilization for this species was evaluated which has already been successfully utilized in the production of other finfish. The results indicate that dividing the semen designated for fertilization of eggs into smaller aliquots and adding it to the eggs at 30 s intervals (i.e., 0, 30 and 60 s), after activation of

Ontogeny and morphometrics of the gills and swim bladder of air-breathing striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus.

The air-breathing fish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus has been shown to have highly plastic branchial surfaces whose area (SA) increases with temperature and aquatic hypoxia. This modulation occurs through development of inter-lamellar cell mass (ILCM). Paradoxically, in conditions where this fish has been shown capable of covering its entire aerobic scope from the water phase, it has been shown to have a very small branchial SA. To address this paradox, we measured the SA, harmonic mean diffusion distance (τh) and calculated the anatomic diffusion factor (ADF) of the branchial and swim bladder s

First report of Mucor circinelloides occurring on yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) from China.

Infected yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) were sent from Niushan Lake Fishery, Hubei Province, China, to our laboratory for diagnosis. Macroscopic daffodil yellow mold was observed on the heads and fins of the fish and one Mucor species was isolated. Based on the morphological and molecular analysis, the species was identified as Mucor circinelloides. Its optimum growth temperature was 30 degrees C and it could not grow at 40 degrees C. The infectivity results showed wound infection could cause 100% cumulative mortalities at all experimental CFU (10(6), 10(7) and 10(8)). The cumulative

The interaction of chlorinated alicyclic insecticides with brain GABA(A) receptors in channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus).

Chlorinated alicyclic insecticides are believed to antagonize the action of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at its receptor in vertebrates. Binding of the specific GABA(A) receptor ligand [35S]-t-butylbicyclophosphorothionate (TBPS) to channel catfish brain P2 membranes suggested a single population of receptors with a Kd (56.6+/-2.6 nM) and Bmax (2435+/-276 fmol/mg protein) that are similar to published values for other fish species. The competition of several chlorinated compounds for TBPS binding was investigated. The most potent inhibitors of TBPS binding were 12-ketoen

Parapinopsin, a novel catfish opsin localized to the parapineal organ, defines a new gene family.

Multiple sites of extraretinal photoreception are present in vertebrates, but the molecular basis of extraretinal phototransduction is poorly understood. This study reports the cloning of the first opsin specifically expressed in the directly photosensitive pineal and parapineal of cold-blooded vertebrates. This opsin, identified in channel catfish and termed parapinopsin, defines a new gene family of vertebrate photopigments and is expressed in a majority of parapinealocytes and a subset of pineal photoreceptor cells.
