A 73-year-old woman presented with progressive symptoms of cranial nerve (V, VI, VIII) palsies, ataxia and gait disturbance due to a rapidly growing atypical trigeminocavernous mass. Percutaneous stereotactic transoval biopsy via Hartel's route revealed an exceedingly rare solitary trigeminal metastasis of a clear cell renal cell carcinoma, treated 16 years earlier without any other evidence of systemic disease. A minimally invasive, intra-operatively navigated approach is presented with detailed description of the stereotactic technique and technical considerations. The transoval biopsy expan

Cervical radiculopathy is a common clinical condition with an annual incidence of 85/10,000. Refractory cases with positive disco-vertebral imaging findings are routinely referred to the Neurosurgeon for evaluation and treatment. In the absence of a clearcut compressive etiology, other rarer but surgically curable causes must be considered before recommending conservative management. We discuss the case of an otherwise active, healthy patient with an invalidating, refractory, relapsing nuchal pain and cervical radiculopathy. Only careful and state-of-the-art neuroimaging led to the correct dia

The availability of data on the feeding habits of species of conservation value may be of great importance to develop analyses for both scientific and management purposes. Stomach flushing is a harmless technique that allowed us to collect extensive data on the feeding habits of six Hydromantes species. Here, we present two datasets originating from a three-year study performed in multiple seasons (spring and autumn) on 19 different populations of cave salamanders. The first dataset contains data of the stomach content of 1,250 salamanders, where 6,010 items were recognized; the second one rep

BACKGROUND: Dog bites are a frequent injury, but the incidence and type of lesions vary across countries. Although only few patients develop complications, the treatment of advanced injuries has a considerable medical, social and economic impact. A frequently isolated pathogen in dog bite wounds is Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacterium that can cause sepsis or meningitis. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) therapy has been shown to be useful in treating anaerobic infections, most likely because it creates an inhospitable environment for the bacterium and enhances the patient's immune response.

Albinism, the reduction or loss of melanin pigment, is found in many diverse cave-dwelling animals. The mechanisms responsible for loss of melanin pigment are poorly understood. In this study we use a melanogenic substrate assay to determine the position where melanin synthesis is blocked in independently evolved cave planthoppers from Hawaii and Croatia. In this assay, substrates of enzymes responsible for melanin biosynthesis are added to fixed specimens in vitro and their ability to rescue black melanin pigmentation is determined. L-tyrosine, the first substrate in the pathway, did not prod

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas are rare, usually benign tumors of neural crest origin. They account for only 0.6% of all head and neck tumors. In the craniocervical area, they are more common in the carotid body and tympanico-jugular regions. To the authors' knowledge, a case of paraganglioma in Meckel's cave has not yet been reported in the medical literature. The pathogenesis and natural history of paragangliomas are still not well understood. We present a case of recurrent paraganglioma in Meckel's cave.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 53-year-old woman was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, dysesthesia

Earth pigments from the three excavations at Pinnacle Point Cave 13B (Western Cape Province, South Africa), spanning the terminal middle Pleistocene and earlier late Pleistocene, are described and analyzed. Qualitative geological categorization primarily rested on textural, fabric, and iron enrichment attributes. Comprehensive recovery allowed identification of non-anthropic pigmentaceous materials, questionable pigments, and 380 pigments (1.08 kg). Less chemically altered pigments were typically fine-grained sedimentary (FGS) rocks, tending to be soft, highly micaceous, prone to laminar fragm

Between October 1998 and April 1999, 51 persons belonging to two separate groups developed acute pulmonary histoplasmosis after visiting a cave in Costa Rica. The first group consisted of 61 children and 14 adults from San Jose, Costa Rica; 44 (72%) were diagnosed with acute histoplasmosis. The second group comprised 14 tourists from the United States and Canada; 9 (64%) were diagnosed with histoplasmosis. After a median incubation time of 14 days, the most common symptoms were headache, fever, cough, and myalgias. Risk factors for developing histoplasmosis included crawling (odds ratio [OR] =

We report cases of cave-associated acute pulmonary histoplasmosis that occurred in two Japanese returning from Yucatan, Mexico. Patient 1 is a 35-year-old woman who worked in a bat-infested cave in Mexico for about 3 weeks. Almost all her colleagues had developed cough, fever and headache after 5 days in the cave. She was asymptomatic but her chest radiograph showed multiple nodules 5-10 mm in diameter throughout both lungs. The histoplasmal mycelial-phase complement fixation titer on admission was 1:16, and 1:128 one month later. Patient 2, the 53-year-old husband of patient 1, was also infec

Histoplasmosis is known to be endemic in various parts of the world, especially in North and Latin America. In Japan, Histoplasma capsulatum has rarely been isolated from the natural environment. To date, only seven cases of histoplasmosis have been reported in Japan including some that were contracted in foreign countries. Herein, we report the occurrence of acute histoplasmosis among Japanese travelers who were exposed to bat guano in a cave near Manaus, Brazil. A group of 8 Japanese travelers entered a cave for a total of 2 hours in March, 1993. All the visitors had been healthy and had no

Sixteen cases of acute benign inhalational histoplasmosis were investigated after an outbreak of the disease in a group visiting a cave. The diagnosis was confirmed in 13 patients by chest X-ray examination, histoplasmin skin testing and serological examination. An attempt to isolate the organism Histoplasma capsulatum was unsuccessful. The epidemiology and relationship of the disease to bat ecology is discussed.

36 patients with a ventricular ulcer demonstrated by endoscopy and secured by histology, were given 2 tablets Caved-S 4 times a day for 4 weeks. Clinical parameters were subjective complaints, such as pain and heartburn, which after a relatively short time, many patients declared to have diminished or ceased completely. Objective parameters were endoscopic explorations before beginning of the treatment, i.e. gastroscopy and biopsy, examinations by gastro-camera and in some cases chromography to exclude a possible malignancy. The control examinations were performed almost exclusively by gastro-

The present work concerns a detailed analysis of Radon time series to differentiate endogenous from exogenous phenomena which provide anomalous signals. Two-year data from two sites in Czech Republic and in Italy are analyzed in order to contribute to the prevention of natural hazards. A new hybrid forecasting method is implemented and tuned for the identification of Radon anomalies in the time series. It is based on the combination of Multiple Linear Regressions, Empirical Mode Decomposition and Support Vector Regression methods that decompose the signal and analyze the components to distingu

The influence of climate change on human settlements in coastal areas is a central question for archaeologists. This paper addresses this issue by focusing on the Témara region in Morocco. The study area was selected for two main reasons. First, it contains numerous caves with Upper Pleistocene deposits, which have yielded remains of anatomically modern humans in association with Aterian and Iberomaurusian artifacts. Second, these caves are currently located on the shore, thus this region is particularly sensitive to major climate change and sea level fluctuations. Diachronic taphonomic study

Caves are unique among ecosystem types because of their physical structures and biological functions. Embedded in rocks, the geological setting defines the boundaries of caves and dictates how energy and matter move through them. General features of caves, compared to surface ecosystems, include absence of light, relatively stable temperature and humidity, and oligotrophic conditions. Despite these conditions, caves are highly diverse ecosystems whose environmental properties are shaped by geological, hydrological, and climatic factors. Cave microbiomes metabolize atmospheric trace gases, such

Loss of pigmentation is a hallmark of cave-dwelling animals, yet the mechanisms and evolutionary forces driving this convergence remain unclear. Here, we investigate the cellular and biochemical basis of albinism across phylogenetically diverse cave species, including annelids, mollusks, and vertebrates. Across all taxa, melanin loss consistently results from disruption of the first step in the biosynthetic pathway. Despite this metabolic block, cells capable of melanin synthesis are retained showing distributions similar to pigmented surface relatives and contributing to innate immune respons

Extremophilic microorganisms offer an untapped potential for producing unique bioactive metabolites with therapeutic applications. In the current study, bacterial isolates were obtained from samples collected from Chamalang cave located in Kohlu District, Balochistan, Pakistan. The cave-derived isolate C1 (Rhodococcus jialingiae) exhibits prominent antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant pathogens (MDR), including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Micrococcus luteus. It also demonstrates substantial antioxidant activity, with 71% and 58.39% DPPH radical scavenging. Optimi

This study aimed to explore the cultivable actinobacterial diversity in Krem Dam cave, Meghalaya, India, and to evaluate their biotechnological potential through antimicrobial activity, plant growth-promoting traits, and metabolic pathway prediction. Sediment samples were collected from five locations within the cave, pretreated, and cultured on selective media to isolate actinobacteria. Isolates were characterized morphologically, physiologically, and chemotaxonomically, followed by 16S rDNA sequencing for molecular identification. The PAPRICA pipeline was used to predict metabolic pathways f

Pre-school children are at highest risk for dog bites. A 2-year-old boy was bitten by a little Pinscher nano dog causing deep injuries which were not apparent on first evaluation. A few hours later he had severe respiratory failure, consistent with subglottic injury. Marked neck enlargement was caused by widespread subcutaneous emphysema. The airway oedema and superimposed systemic infection required a week of intensive care to improve and restore spontaneous breathing. Even an apparently benign bite lesion can evolve into a life-threatening respiratory condition, and there should be a high in
