Mental disorder as a risk factor for dog bites and post-bite cellulitis.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with mental disorders are at an increased risk for sustaining traumatic injury. No study has evaluated the association between mental disorders and the injury of dog bite. We conducted case-control studies to investigate whether people with mental disorders are at elevated risks of dog bite and post-bite cellulitis. METHODS: Using insurance data of 2000-2007, we compared 4660 patients with dog bites and 18,640 controls without the events for the association with mental disorders and other covariates. Amongst those with dog bites, a nested case-control study was performed

[Children's rhinosinusitis orbital complications].

The number of cases of children's sinogenic orbital complications does not reduce in spite of the advanced methods of paranasal sinuses visualization, wide use of antibacterial therapy against sinusitis, and preventive vaccination against pneumococcal disease. Orbital complications are more common with children than with adults, the basic reason of their development being ethmoiditis. The prevailing classification of orbital complications proposed by J. Chandler et al. divides these into preceptal and postceptal forms and gives description to 5 development stages of orbital complications in th

Successful Placement of a BAHA Implant in a Patient With Epidermolysis Bullosa: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a spectrum of mechanobullous disorders characterized by blistering following minor trauma or traction to the skin. Hearing loss in this population is poorly described in the otolaryngology literature, and its treatment oftentimes results in external auditory canal skin irritation. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 26-year-old female with EB and mixed hearing loss unable to wear conventional hearing aids due to sequelae of the external auditory canals. An osseointegrated implant was used as other hearing aids were deemed to be too destructi

Small-bore catheter is more than an alternative to the ordinary chest tube for pleural drainage.

BACKGROUND: Pleural collection is a common medical problem. For decades, the chest tube of different designs was the commonly used toll for pleural drainage. Over the past few years, small-bore catheter (SBC) has gained more popularity. We present our experience of using SBCs for the drainage of pleural collection of different etiologies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 398 small-bore pleural catheters were inserted in 369 patients with pleural collection during the period from January 2013 to October 2019. Data were collected regarding the efficacy of drainage, experienced chest pain, durat

Case of atypical cutaneous M ycobacterium chelonae infection in patient of systemic lupus erythematosus after cyclophosphamide therapy.

Mycobacterium c helonae is one of the rapidly growing non-tuberculous mycobacteria that can be isolated from water, soils and aerosols. Localised infections have been reported associated with tattoo parlours, pedicures and cosmetic procedures. But disseminated infection is usually associated with individuals who are immunocompromised, predominantly affecting limbs but sparing abdomen and back. We herein present a case where patient was on immunosuppressive therapy and developed locally severe infection around right ankle. A 69-year-old woman known to rheumatology presents in outpatients with s

Cogan's syndrome associated with orbital inflammation.

Cogan's syndrome is a relatively rare inflammatory disorder presenting with a combination of ocular and vestibuloauditory symptoms. The first cases were described by David Cogan in 1945. Typically the ocular signs involve the anterior segment; however there are no descriptions of orbital inflammation associated with Cogan's syndrome. We describe such a case. A 66-year-old immunosuppressed male patient with known Cogan's syndrome presented to the eye department with right-sided proptosis, chemosis and ocular injection. Ocular motility was reduced. Other than Cogan's syndrome there were no other

pH-dependent modulation of alkaline phosphatase activity in Serratia marcescens.

Serratia marcescens is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for causing nosocomial infections, corneal ulcer, necrotizing fasciitis, cellulites, and brain abscess. Alkaline phosphatase (APase) is believed to play an important role in the survival of several intracellular pathogens and their adaptation. We have studied the effect of low phosphate concentration and acid pH on the APase activities of S. marcescens. In a low phosphate medium, some strains of S. marcescens synthesize two different types of APases, a constitutive (CAPase) and an inducible (IAPase). Both the CAPase and IAPase isoenz

Demedicalizing baldness: An experimental, mixed methods study.

Baldness is a common bodily change most men experience. It is extensively medicalized. Specifically, it is depicted as a negative disease that only a profitable industry's cosmetic, pharmaceutical and other products can 'treat'. This study aimed to assess whether a short demedicalization intervention, an evidence-based text of around 400 words, could promote acceptance among balding men. An international sample of 350 balding men completed a mixed-method, experimental, survey. Participants were randomized into 1 of 3 conditions with text that medicalized baldness (presented it as a disadvantag

Effects of Bipolar Radiofrequency on Collagen Synthesis from Patients with Brachial Ptosis.

UNLABELLED: Radiofrequency is frequently used for skin rejuvenation, localized fat elimination and cellulite treatment. It prompts the expression of thermal shock proteins that lead to dermal thickening as a result of collagen synthesis. The authors report a histological and clinical analysis of the arm subdermal changes before and after bipolar radiofrequency treatment plus liposuction to determine their benefits for arm contouring. METHODS: Inclusion criteria included patients with stage 1, 2a, and 2b brachial ptosis (Duncan classification) and upper limb fat deposits who were considered ca

Modifications of the LICAP/LTAP Flap Technique in Partial Breast Reconstruction for Difficult Tumor Locations.

The authors propose modifications of the lateral thoracic artery perforator/lateral intercostal artery perforator flap partial breast reconstruction that can help achieve improved aesthetic results, especially for centrally and medially located tumors. Lumpectomy is performed using the retromammary approach through lateral contour access without skin mobilization from parenchyma. This minimizes trauma and scarring of parenchyma and skin in the lateral part of the breast. In case of central or medial location of the tumor, the authors propose moving the flap into the tumor bed through a cut ("w

Molecular Profiling of EGFR Status to Identify Skin Toxicity in Colorectal Cancer: A Clinicopathological Review.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) represents an important health problem, being the third most common type of cancer. In Romania, the CRC incidence has doubled over the years. Both environmental factors and genetic susceptibility are very important for the pathogenesis of CRC. The epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) plays an extremely important role in CRC tumorigenesis. Overexpression or dysregulation of EGFR pathway molecules are frequently associated with tumor aggressiveness and patient response to treatment. Based on these considerations, EGFR became one of the first targets of molecular therap

An aggressive group a streptococcal cellulitis of the hand and forearm requiring surgical debridement.

Group A streptococcus is responsible for a diverse range of soft tissue infections. Manifestations range from minor oropharyngeal and cellulitic skin infections to more severe conditions such as necrotizing fasciitis and septic shock. Troubling increases in the incidence and the severity of streptococcal infections have been reported over the past 25 years. Cases of streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis have received significant attention in the literature, with prompt surgical debridement being the mainstay of treatment. However, cases of rapidly progressing upper extremity streptococcal cellul
