The small molecule Chicago Sky Blue promotes heart repair following myocardial infarction in mice.

The adult mammalian heart regenerates poorly after injury and, as a result, ischemic heart diseases are among the leading causes of death worldwide. The recovery of the injured heart is dependent on orchestrated repair processes including inflammation, fibrosis, cardiomyocyte survival, proliferation, and contraction properties that could be modulated in patients. In this work we designed an automated high-throughput screening system for small molecules that induce cardiomyocyte proliferation in vitro and identified the small molecule Chicago Sky Blue 6B (CSB). Following induced myocardial infa

A Network Intervention to Locate Newly HIV Infected Persons Within MSM Networks in Chicago.

Individuals with recent/acute HIV-infection have an increased likelihood of disease transmission. To evaluate effectiveness of identifying recent infections, we compared networks of recently and long-term HIV-infected individuals. The Transmission Reduction Intervention Project included two separate arms of recruitment, networks of recently HIV-infected individuals and networks of long-term HIV-infected individuals. Networks of each were recruited and tested for HIV and syphilis infection. The per-seed yield ratios of recruitment were compared between arms. Overall, 84 (41.6%) of 202 participa

Chicago Ebola Response Network (CERN): A Citywide Cross-hospital Collaborative for Infectious Disease Preparedness.

The 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic and international public health emergency has been referred to as a "black swan" event, or an event that is unlikely, hard to predict, and highly impactful once it occurs. The Chicago Ebola Response Network (CERN) was formed in response to EVD and is capable of receiving and managing new cases of EVD, while also laying the foundation for a public health network that can anticipate, manage, and prevent the next black swan public health event. By sharing expertise, risk, and resources among 4 major academic centers, Chicago created a sustainable n

Prevalence and Correlates of Joint Pain in Chicago Midlife Women With HIV: A Cross-sectional Study.

Joint pain is among the most common and disabling forms of chronic pain in women. Whether joint pain is more prevalent among women with versus without HIV (WWH/WWoH) and contributes to greater impairment is unknown. The Pain, Enjoyment, and General Activity instrument assessed joint pain in midlife WWH versus WWoH to determine associations with frailty, loneliness, and depressive/anxiety symptoms. Moderate/severe pain was more commonly reported in WWH than WWoH (44.1 vs. 38.3%) but not significantly. Women with moderate/severe joint pain were more likely to be prefrail/frail (aOR 3.05; confide

High and Rapid Uptake of COVID-19 Vaccine Among Chicago Women with and Without HIV.

BACKGROUND: Chicago sustained substantial COVID-19 morbidity and mortality with greatest burdens among low-income communities of color. We sought to determine the prevalence and predictors of vaccine uptake and refusal over 3 years among a long-term cohort of Chicago women with/without HIV (WWH/WWoH). METHODS: Research staff provided outreach and collected data on COVID-19 knowledge, vaccine intent, uptake, and refusal quarterly during 2020 and then semiannually through 2023. 146 women (102 WWH and 44 WWoH) participated. RESULTS: Among 146 women, mean age was 54.4 years, 70% were WWH; predom

A multidimensional tool for quantifying structural racism: Application to adverse pregnancy outcomes in Chicago, Illinois.

Understanding the relationship between structural racism and health is essential for identifying practice- and policy-based interventions to reduce health inequities. We developed neighborhood-based measures of structural racism and tested their associations with adverse pregnancy outcomes, health outcomes characterized by some of the most pronounced racial inequities. We leveraged electronic health records from 89,410 pregnant patients at six Chicago-area hospitals. Patients were linked with neighborhood exposure to 22 experiences reflective of structural racism based on home address, geocode

Kidney Transplant Outcomes in Patients With Scleroderma an Experience at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, Illinois.

BACKGROUND: Scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) is a devastating complication of diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc) that occurs in 5% to 20% of patients in this population. End-stage kidney disease develops in 25% to 40% of SRC, and mortality occurs in 50% at 5 years. Kidney transplantation (KT) is a viable option, but little data exist on outcomes. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of all patients with dcSSc who underwent KT at Northwestern Hospital between 2000 and 2020. The objective of this study was to determine graft and patient survival at years 5 and 10 post-transplant.

The effect of Illinois Medicaid coverage of induced abortion on patient access at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

OBJECTIVES: Beginning January 1, 2018, Illinois House Bill 40 (HB40) requires Medicaid coverage of induced abortion. The objective of this study was to describe the impact of HB40 on gestational age at time of induced abortion at a single academic medical center in Chicago, IL. STUDY DESIGN: We used Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes to identify patients who induced abortion one year before (2016) and one year immediately after (2018) HB40 implementation. We collected demographic and clinical information from the electronic medical record. We used ANOVA and Chi-square tests to evaluat

A Case Study in Citizen Science: The Effectiveness of a Trap-Neuter-Return Program in a Chicago Neighborhood.

The use of trap-neuter-return (TNR) as a method of managing free-roaming cat populations has increased in the United States in recent decades. Historically, TNR has been conducted most often at a grassroots level, which has led to inconsistent data collection and assessment practices. Consequently, a paucity of analyzable data exists. An initiative is underway to standardize TNR program data collection and assessment. However, it could be some time before scientifically sound protocols are implemented on a broad scale. In the interim, sets of data collected by nascent citizen scientists offer

Disparities in influenza mortality and transmission related to sociodemographic factors within Chicago in the pandemic of 1918.

Social factors have been shown to create differential burden of influenza across different geographic areas. We explored the relationship between potential aggregate-level social determinants and mortality during the 1918 influenza pandemic in Chicago using a historical dataset of 7,971 influenza and pneumonia deaths. Census tract-level social factors, including rates of illiteracy, homeownership, population, and unemployment, were assessed as predictors of pandemic mortality in Chicago. Poisson models fit with generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were used to estimate the association betwe

Random digit dialing in Chicago CARDIA: comparison of individuals with unlisted and listed telephone numbers.

Young adult blacks and whites aged 18-30 years of both low and high educational levels were recruited through random digit dialing to participate in the Chicago, Illinois, portion of a longitudinal study, Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA). Overall, 31% of randomly selected persons eligible to participate had unlisted telephone numbers--about 50% of black men and women and 11% and 17% of white men and women, respectively. There was no difference in proportions of numbers unlisted by educational level, except for white men, who were more likely to have unlisted numbers at

Quantitative and Spatial Associations of High Disability Prevalence and Extreme Heat With Stroke Disparities in Chicago.

INTRODUCTION: Compared with individuals without disabilities, people with physical, sensory, intellectual, and psychological disabilities have increased stroke risk, and when exposed to extreme heat, they are more vulnerable to adverse effects, including heat-related illness, cardiovascular diseases, poststroke conditions, and mortality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of populations with disabilities and the colocation of extreme heat with geographic patterns of stroke mortality. METHODS: Data for community areas in Chicago were collected and analyzed in 2024-2025

Assessment of Esophagogastric Junction Barrier Function With the Supine-Upright Transition of the Chicago Classification Protocol.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The straight leg raise (SLR) is a provocative maneuver used to assess the esophagogastric junction (EGJ) barrier function during high-resolution manometry (HRM) and is part of the Milan Score (MS). The Chicago Classification 4.0 (CCv4.0) protocol requires patients to perform a supine-upright transition (SUT), increasing intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). The aim of this study was to compare the SUT and SLR maneuvers for efficacy in increasing IAP and in predicting pathologic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). METHODS: Consecutive adult patients with persistent GERD sympto

External validation of the Chicago Chiari Outcome Scale in adults with Chiari malformation type I.

OBJECTIVE: The Chicago Chiari Outcome Scale (CCOS) serves as a standardized clinical outcome evaluation tool among patients with Chiari malformation type I (CM-I). While the reliability of this scale has been proven for pediatric patients, the literature lacks CCOS validation when used solely in adults. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the validity of the CCOS in an external cohort of adult patients. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed the medical records of symptomatic patients with CM-I who underwent posterior fossa decompression between 2010 and 2018 in six neurosurgical

Predictive Modeling of Lapses in Care for People Living with HIV in Chicago: Algorithm Development and Interpretation.

BACKGROUND: Reducing care lapses for people living with HIV is critical to ending the HIV epidemic and beneficial for their health. Predictive modeling can identify clinical factors associated with HIV care lapses. Previous studies have identified these factors within a single clinic or using a national network of clinics, but public health strategies to improve retention in care in the United States often occur within a regional jurisdiction (eg, a city or county). OBJECTIVE: We sought to build predictive models of HIV care lapses using a large, multisite, noncurated database of electronic h

Changes in the esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction manometric feature based on the Chicago Classification updates.

BACKGROUND: The critical diagnostic criteria for esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction (EGJOO) were published in the latest Chicago Classification version 4.0 (CCv4.0). In addition to the previous criterion [elevated integrated relaxation pressure (IRP) in supine position], manometric diagnosis of EGJOO requires meeting the criteria of elevated median-IRP during upright wet swallows and elevated intrabolus pressure. However, with the diagnostic criteria modification, the change in manometric features of EGJOO remained unclear. AIM: To evaluate the esophageal motility characteristics of

Assessing Spatial Relationships Between Rates of Crime and Rates of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia in Chicago, 2012.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain serious public health problems particularly in urban environments in the USA. Despite accumulating research into the role of aggregate rates of crime in shaping rates of STIs, few studies account for spatial dependence in the structure of geographical data. Using multiple spatial analysis methodologies, the following study investigated spatial patterns in community area rates of violent, drug, and property crimes and rates of infection of gonorrhea and chlamydia in 77 community areas in Chicago. Moran's I analyses confirmed global spatial dependenc
