Legal regulation of surrogate motherhood in Israel.

The Israeli Law on surrogate motherhood demands a preconception agreement to include payments to be made to the surrogate mother. Surrogacy arrangements with family members are forbidden. Commercial surrogacy is allowed and encouraged. The Law causes many problems. Validity of consent given by surrogate mothers is doubtful. Possible future psychological harm are ignored. There is a danger of "commodification" of children. Abusing women of low socio-economic status as breeding machines may be another outcome. No clear responsibility is imposed on the "intended parents" for an impaired child. Th

Promoting resilience for children of parents with opioid use disorder: A pilot study of a directed intervention.

PROBLEM: Having a parent with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is a childhood adverse experience (ACE), magnified by other accompanying ACEs. Outcomes for these children tend to include developing mental illness and/or Substance Use Disorders themselves. Few studies address these children's experiences and needs. Without child-focused interventions to foster their resilience, generational ramifications of the OUD crisis will persist. METHODS: Nine children (ages 12-17), in Department of Social Services' custody, participated in this pilot study. The intervention delivered was Substance Abuse and Men

What happens after the hospital? An analysis of longitudinal care needs in children treated for child physical abuse.

BACKGROUND: Victims of child physical abuse (CPA) undergo stabilization and social evaluation during initial management. Current data guides the initial hospital course, but few studies evaluate post-hospital care. The aim of this study was to evaluate compliance with recommended post-discharge visits. METHODS: A retrospective review of our trauma database at a Level I pediatric trauma center from 2014-2018 was performed. Data included demographics, injuries, and longitudinal outcomes. Descriptive statistics and univariate analyses were performed. RESULTS: There were 401 patients (409 unique

Custodial grandparenting: perceptions of loss by non-custodial grandparent peers.

In order to explore the generalizability of perceptions of the losses experienced by grandparents raising their grandchildren, 610 traditional/non-custodial grandparents, who had no custodial responsibility for their grandchildren, read a randomly assigned scenario depicting a grandmother and her grandchild, wherein scenarios varied in terms of grandchild gender, the presence or absence of grandchild problems, and the reason for role assumption. They then completed the Perceptions of Loss (PLS) scale, where higher scores indexed greater awareness of loss. Results suggested that perceptions of

[Multidisciplinary approach of the obese child to the dietary residency of "Clairs Vallons"].

The pediatric obesity has become a real problem for the public health. One estimates that about 16% of the Belgian pediatric population and up to 33% of the Americans are concerned by this problematic. 70% of the teenagers will remain obese once adult if no treatment is proposed during the childhood. Because of that evolution, some journalists wrote: "that the old continent would be able to catch up with the new world in the next ten years". The malnutrition is not however the only factor at the origin of the obesity. The sedentary lifestyle (lack of exercise, TV, Internet, video games) the do

Early developmental history and pediatric posttraumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To determine which factors from the early developmental histories of maltreated children are associated with the risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). DESIGN: Retrospective cohort analytic study. SETTING: A county juvenile/family court (not a criminal court). SAMPLE: The sample consisted of 117 severely maltreated children, aged 5 to 12 years, whose maltreatment was so severe that they were removed from parental custody. Forty-one (35%) of these children met criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Revised Third Edition, for PTSD.

Exploring maternal grief and shame in addiction recovery for pregnant and early parenting women using community-based participatory research: a qualitative descriptive study.

INTRODUCTION: Little research has explored the constructs of grief and shame-proneness for pregnant and early parenting women seeking recovery from substance use disorders (SUD) and the impact on parents' and children's well-being. PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore the contexts of reported guilt and shame and the associations with grief and loss among pregnant and early parenting women in SUD recovery. METHODS: Using a community based participatory research (CBPR) approach, we conducted in-depth interviews with 30 pregnant and early parenting women with SUD who were recruited from a resid

The Knowledge of Neglect: Reflections of Mothers Experiencing Homelessness in Dublin on Social Care Interventions Involving Their Children.

This paper examines the reflections on caregiving provided by a group of Irish mothers who were homeless, struggling with addiction, and had lost primary custody of their children. Drawing on Das's (Slum acts. Polity Press, Cambridge, 2022) discussion of 'inordinate knowledge', or knowledge of real-life and morally dubious scenarios that resist attempts at resolution through philosophical reasoning, the paper explores how women in these situations grappled with the realisation of having neglected their children. I demonstrate my interlocutors' ongoing ethical self-evaluations and continued att

"Doctor, Why Didn't You Adopt My Baby?" Observant Participation, Care, and the Simultaneous Practice of Medicine and Anthropology.

Medical anthropology has long appreciated the clinical encounter as a rich source of data and a key site for critical inquiry. It is no surprise, then, that a number of physician-anthropologists have used their clinical insights to make important contributions to the field. How does this duality challenge and enhance the moral practice and ethics of care inherent both to ethnography and to medicine? How do bureaucratic and professional obligations of HIPAA and the IRB intersect with aspirations of anthropology to understand human experience and of medicine to heal with compassion? In this pape

Drug treatment: explaining the gender paradox.

There is something of a gender paradox in drug user treatment. Research consistently indicates that women possess "risk factors" associated with drug use relapse, yet women are no more likely, and possibly less likely, to relapse to drug use. Efforts to explain this paradox involve a longitudinal study of 330 women and men participating in outpatient drug-user treatment associated with the evaluation of the Los Angeles Target Cities Project funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment. The findings offer no support for the drug severity and social support hypotheses, but some support for

Comparing the onset of child sexual abuse perpetration from adolescence into adulthood: Are there unique risks, and what does this mean for prevention?

BACKGROUND: There are no known studies that have directly compared factors associated with the onset of child sexual abuse (CSA) perpetration during emerging adulthood, with CSA perpetration in other life-stages. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated common and distinct factors associated with the onset of CSA perpetration (i.e., age at first child sexual offense) across the life course to inform, and tailor, current prevention efforts. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The sample comprised 354 males, from custodial and community corrections, and sentenced for sexual offenses against children. METHODS

["Psychologic marital unfitness" in cyclothymia? A case report on the topic of the annullment procedure in canon law].

According to the Canon Law (CIC) of the catholic church a marriage can be annulled because of psychological inability under certain conditions. We present the case report of a married woman, who fell ill with cyclothymia after her first childbirth. Her marriage was annulled under canon 1095 (n.3 CIC) because of psychological inability to fulfill martial obligations. The authors believe that this represents a clear cut case of discrimination against patients with mental disorders: on the one hand the catholic church claims that every martial bond is principally indissoluble; on the other hand t

Cocaine abuse during pregnancy: psychiatric considerations.

Cocaine abuse is an increasing problem in the obstetric population. It not only poses a health risk to the pregnant woman, but can precipitate premature labor and abruptio placentae, and has been associated with a number of physical and behavioral problems in the newborn. Evaluation and management of the pregnant cocaine abuser is similar in most respects to that of nonpregnant adults, but diagnosis, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy is strongly influenced by the pregnancy. This article describes the risks of cocaine use during pregnancy and outlines the evaluation and management of the pregn

Circumstances of overdose among suburban women who use opioids: Extending an urban analysis informed by drug, set, and setting.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdoses are primarily discussed by the pharmacological properties of the drugs used. Research shows that other factors such as the social/physical environment and the mental/emotional states can have an impact on overdose events. Ataiants and colleagues (2020) used Zinberg's "drug, set, and setting" framework to identify circumstances surrounding overdose experiences of street-involved women in Philadelphia. The aim of this paper is to extend their analysis to a diverse sample of suburban women who experienced overdoses. METHODS: The mixed-methods design consisted of ethn

Trafficking Experiences and Psychosocial Features of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Victims.

Domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) is an increasingly recognized traumatic crime premised upon the control, abuse, and exploitation of youth. By definition, DMST is the "recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for the purpose of a commercial sex act" within domestic borders, in which the person is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident under the age of 18 years. The present study described the demographics, psychosocial features, and trafficking experiences (e.g., environments of recruitment, relationship to trafficker, solicitation) of DMST victims.

Interpretation problems in a forensic case of abstinence determination using alcohol markers in hair.

In a child custody case a mother with a longstanding history of alcohol misuse had to show absolute abstinence for one year. She entered a residential rehabilitation for six months and was tested two months later by way of a hair test for ethyl glucuronide (EtG) with the result of 22 pg/mg in the proximal 0-1cm segment and the segments 1-2 cm and 2-3 cm being negative. This was interpreted as a minimum alcohol intake of 20-50 units per week in the month before sampling. Since the mother denied any alcohol intake a second hair sample was collected seven weeks after the first and analyzed for fa
