Syndromes, communicative disorders, and black children.

Birth defects increase the risk of speech, language, and hearing disorders in childhood. The prevalence of particular congenital anomalies varies from one racial and ethnic group to another. Some conditions such as the hemoglobinopathies, polydactyly, and external ear malformations are more common among black people. Other birth defects are rarer among black children, notably cleft lip and palate, neural tube defects, and phenylketonuria. The more common defects of Down's syndrome, neurofibromatosis, and cerebral palsy appear to occur in equal frequency in black and white Americans.Speech-lang

An avoidant restrictive food intake disorder in a 7-year-old male came with nutritional deficiencies: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a recently recognized feeding and eating disorder characterized by restricted or avoidance of food intake due to the sensory characteristics of the food or fear of the unpleasant consequences of eating without concerns about body image. It commonly presents in childhood and can lead to serious nutritional and developmental outcomes. While reports from high-income countries are increasing, data from low-resource settings remain scarce. In such settings, malnutrition is often attributed to food insecurity or infection, making ARFID

Host factors and pneumonia in hospitalised children.

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) account for 20-24% of childhood deaths in India. The present study investigated the host related risk factors in the outcome of pneumonia in 127 hospitalised children between the ages of 2 months and 5 years. The case fatality rate in the study was 11.8%. Presence of malnutrition is a significantly important factor for both increased duration of pneumonia and fatal outcome. Other factors for increased pneumonia mortality include the presence of associated illness and the severity of the pneumonia.

Twin children in The Gambia: evidence for genetic regulation of physical characteristics in the presence of sub-optimal nutrition.

It has been demonstrated that physical growth characteristics are subject to genetic regulation. However, in developing countries, environmental factors such as food availability and frequent infections are associated with growth faltering which is particularly marked in infancy. We have conducted anthropometric measurements of a cohort of twin children aged less than 14 years living in a rural area of The Gambia to ascertain the extent to which genetic factors influence physical growth in the presence of a sub-optimal diet. Almost 25% of the children were more than 2SD below the median of the

Undernutrition and vitamin A deficiency in the Department of Linguère, Louga Region of Sénégal.

Anthropometric measurements were taken on 281 toddlers (24-48 mo old) in Linguère, Sénégal, to determine the prevalence of undernutrition. Blood samples collected from 271 of the toddlers were analyzed for retinol and carotenoids by HPLC. According to the National Center for Health Statistics reference values 30.2% of the population was undernourished. Serum retinol values were below the lower limit of the normal range in 71.5% of the children; 7.4% of this group had concentrations < 0.35 mumol/L, placing them at risk for xerophthalmia. Only 3% of the population had serum retinol values > or =

[The first visit to the dental care practice].

During a child s first 1,000 days, many important events take place, such as the eruption of its first tooth, taking its first bite, learning to brush its teeth and the first visits to a dental care practice. This article discusses the factors influencing a child s oral health during this crucial period. It offers oral care providers guidelines for young children s first visits. It is essential for oral care providers to be able to recognize disorders among this patient group and to treat these, when necessary. In addition, during a first visit, parents questions are answered and subjects like

Child undernutrition is associated with maternal mental health and other sociodemographic factors in low-income settings in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mental health and other underlying factors might affect a child's nutritional status. This study assesses child undernutrition and its associated characteristics, including maternal mental health, in low-income settings in Dhaka, Bangladesh. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 397 lactating mothers with children aged 6-23 months from low-income settings in Dhaka. Anthropometric measurements were taken following standard protocols, and Z-scores for weight-for-age, height-for-age, and BMI-for-age were calculated. Maternal depression and anxi

Maternal nutritional status as a contributing factor for the risk of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Compare nutritional status of 57 South African mothers of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) with 148 mothers of controls. METHODS: Dietary data were analyzed for macronutrients, micronutrients, and fats via estimated average requirements (EAR) and adequate intakes (AI) for pregnant women. RESULTS: Virtually all mothers were likely deficient on most micronutrients by either EAR (<50%) or AI values. Mothers of FASD children consumed more of 13 of 25 micronutrients. For percentage below EAR, only vitamin D was significantly higher for FASD mothers. Despite no diff

Immune mechanisms of congenital Zika syndrome.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can adversely affect mother and child. ZIKV can vertically transmit from mother to fetus, especially during early pregnancy, to cause congenital Zika syndrome (CZS), which includes microcephaly, ocular and musculoskeletal defects, and other disorders. Whereas human clinical studies have provided crucial insights into how ZIKV affects pregnancy, animal models have uncovered mechanisms of fetal disease. This Review discusses fetal immunological factors that contribute to or protect from CZS, as well as the interplay between maternal and fetal immunity

[Questionnaire and interview on physical health within the scope of The Child and Adolescent Health Survey].

Physical health is an important dimension within even the broadest concept of health. However, comprehensive and representative data on the physical health of children and adolescents in Germany are so far lacking. In the Health Survey for Children and Adolescents information will be collected on various aspects of physical health: pregnancy, birth, child development, self-rated health, physical well-being, acute and chronic disorders, congenital malformations, injuries, symptoms and complaints, disability and pain. It will be possible to analyse various determinants and consequences of physic

Nutrition support of the pediatric patient with AIDS.

Maintaining optimal nutrition in the pediatric patient with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is challenging, but it may be one of the most effective therapies. Patients experience numerous complications that compromise nutritional status. Infection, fever, diarrhea, feeding problems, and decreased intake all contribute to malnutrition, which in turn predisposes the patient even more to infection and malabsorption. Nutrition assessment should be done routinely so that new problems may be identified and treated. High-calorie, high-protein feedings, vitamin supplementation, and, when ne

Global Implementation of the Nutrition-Friendly School Initiative (NFSI): A Scoping Review of Strategies, Challenges, Barriers, and Facilitators.

BACKGROUND: The Nutrition-Friendly School Initiative (NFSI) is a whole-school approach designed to address the triple burden of malnutrition among school-aged children. However, evidence on its implementation across diverse settings remains fragmented. METHODS: This scoping review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework and searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and gray literature sources for studies explicitly implementing the NFSI framework. FINDINGS: Sixteen records were included. Evidence suggests that NFSI implementation improves nutrition knowledge, dietary behaviors, and s

Nutritional management of infants and toddlers with chronic renal failure.

Normal renal function is an essential prerequisite for normal nutrition. Renal failure results in malnutrition and growth retardation, which are particularly marked when renal failure has its onset early in life. Conversely, the careful application of nutritional therapy can ameliorate the effects of renal failure and allow improved well being and growth and possibly retard the rate of progression of renal failure. Nutritional therapy includes the provision of an adequate energy intake, appropriate intakes of water, electrolytes, vitamins and minerals and regulation of protein and phosphorus i

Ethical aspects of genetic disease and genetic counselling.

With the reduction in diseases due to nutritional deficiencies and infection, disorders which are wholly or partly genetic are becoming relatively more important in all branches of modern medicine. Genetic counselling has developed in recent years from just explaining to an individual or a couple the risk of them producing a handicapped child, to the possibility in many cases of better diagnosis and active intervention to reduce the risks. At the same time antenatal screening programmes have been introduced to detect women who may be carrying a fetus with a severe handicapping anomaly. The eth

Copper levels in cholestatic infants on parenteral nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Copper levels are primarily regulated by biliary excretion. In cholestatic patients, there is a concern that the standard dose of copper in parenteral nutrition (PN) will result in excessive copper levels. This study looked retrospectively at cholestatic infants receiving PN with measured copper levels to ascertain if this is an actual clinical concern. METHODS: All infants from the previous 10 years receiving PN who had a copper level checked and were cholestatic were reviewed. Children with metabolic or liver structural anomalies were excluded from the review. Of the 28 patients

Opinions and practices of healthcare professionals on assessment of disease associated malnutrition in children: Results from an international survey.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Lack of consensus on clinical indicators for the assessment of pediatric disease associated malnutrition (DAM) may explain its under-recognition in clinical practice. This study surveyed the opinions of health professionals (HP) on clinical indicators of DAM and barriers impeding routine nutritional screening in children. METHODS: Web-based questionnaire survey (April 2013-August 2015) in Australia, Belgium, Israel, Spain, The Netherlands, Turkey and UK. RESULTS: There were 937 questionnaires returned via local professional associations, of which 693 respondents fulfilled
