The neural underpinnings of learning disabilities (LD) are still not known. Recent discussions focus over whether domain-specific and/or domain-unspecific reasons might be responsible for LD either alone or in combination with each other. This study applied standard nonverbal Go-NoGo tasks (visual continuous performance test) to LD and healthy control children to examine whether they show deficient executive functions. During this Go-NoGo task, electroencephalogram was measured in addition to reaction times, hits, omissions, and commissions to the Go and NoGo stimuli. It was shown that childre

Information on unmet health care needs reveal problems that are related to unavailability and inaccessibility of services. The study objectives were to determine the prevalence, and the reasons for unmet service needs among children with disabilities in the state of Penang, Malaysia. Caregivers of children with disabilities aged 0 to 12 years registered with the Penang Social Welfare Department in 2012 answered a self-administered mailed questionnaire. A total of 305 questionnaires were available for analysis (response rate 37.9%). Services that were very much needed and yet highly unmet were

OBJECTIVE: Candidacy criteria for cochlear implants have expanded to include children with complex developmental disabilities. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term benefits of cochlear implantation for this clinical population.
DESIGN: The study involved a retrospective chart review.
STUDY SAMPLE: The review identified 21 children with complex disabilities who had received cochlear implants in a pediatric center prior to 2004. Length of cochlear implant use was between 7.3 and 19.0 years. Long-term functional auditory abilities were assessed pre and post-operatively using mea

Responsive Teaching is an early intervention curriculum designed to address the cognitive, language, and social emotional needs of young children with developmental problems. This innovative intervention model was derived from research conducted primarily with children with Down syndrome and their mothers. Results from these studies indicated that during the early childhood years, parents promote their children's development by engaging in highly responsive interactions throughout their daily routines. The effects of responsiveness are mediated by the impact it has on children's use of several

PURPOSE: This study examined the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of a community-based group fitness program for children with disabilities.
METHODS: Twenty-eight children with neuromuscular and developmental disabilities, 6 to 14 years of age, participated. The 16-week community-based program, held twice weekly, consisted of strengthening, aerobic conditioning, and flexibility exercises. A pretest-posttest design was used, and the following outcomes were measured: isometric muscle strength of the knee extensors, hip abductors, and ankle plantarflexors, walking energy expenditure, funct

We report 13 severely disabled children with acute respiratory distress syndrome, who were treated at the Department of Pediatrics, Niigata City General Hospital between 1995 and 2002. The children ranged in age from 1 year to 16 years. All were non-ambulant. Chronic aspiration and gastro-esophageal reflux were recognized in 12 patients. Patients had the rapid onset of dyspnea refractory to oxygen therapy. Diffuse bilateral lung infiltrates were present on chest X-ray. Predisposing events included sepsis (3 patients), pneumomia (7 patients), pancreatitis (1 patient) and two children with other

In contrast to physical characteristics, the developmental and behavioural characteristics of children with Sotos syndrome are not well documented. Data from a survey of 27 children (17 males and 10 females; mean age 10 years 7 months; range 6 to 15 years) with mild and moderate learning disabilities were obtained concerning school placement, social networks, adaptive competence, and behavioural problems and compared with a control group matched for cognitive level and age. Ten children attended a mainstream school (with remedial assistance), eight were placed in a school for children with lea

A novel analysis of coherence using a combination of three criteria (syntactic connexity, pragmatic complexity, and rhetorical well-roundedness) was applied to short narratives produced by a group of 60 Spanish-speaking children of different ages and grades with reading disabilities and compared to those produced by normal children. We posit a scale of 6 degrees of increasing coherence. This feature of children's writing, together with 2 others (viz. number of propositions, or "story points," recovered and number of words employed), was compared to features of children's reading by means of di

An outbreak of scabies was detected in autumn 1992 at a school for children with learning disabilities. Because of the scale of the outbreak all the children at the school, and their contacts, were treated on one 'mass treatment day'. Scabies is still widely misunderstood and carries a social stigma, which makes investigation and control more difficult than it would otherwise be.

Mental flexibility (skill with shifting response set) and visual planning skills were examined with a group of 60 children and adolescents with learning disabilities. The sample consisted of 44 boys and 16 girls with an age range of 9 to 15. Scores from the Trail Making Test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test were cluster-analyzed and subgroups were formulated. The results of the cluster analysis indicated a two-group solution to be most appropriate. One subtype was clearly dysfunctional on the classifying variables, while the other subgroup approached average levels. The two subtypes were co

The critical elements in the Montessori philosophy are respect for the child, individualization of the program to that child, and the fostering of independence. With her research background, Maria Montessori devised a multisensory developmental method and designed materials which isolate each concept the teacher presents to the child. In presenting these materials the teacher observes the concept and skill development level of the child, ascertaining areas of strength and weakness and matching the next presentation to the child's level of development. Using small sequential steps, the teacher w

A method of identifying children with specific reading disabilities by identifying discrepancies between their reading and listening comprehension scores was validated with disabled and nondisabled readers in Grades 4, 5, and 6. The method is based on a modification of the reading comprehension subtest of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test (Dunn & Markwardt, 1970). In this modification, even-numbered sentences are read by subjects, and odd-numbered sentences are read by the test administrator as subjects listen. The features of this test that reduce demands on working memory, thereby maki

The Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM) and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) are the most commonly used measures of functional performance in children. The purpose of this study was to determine the concurrent validity of the instruments when used with children with developmental disabilities and acquired brain injury. The subjects were 41 children, age 1.3 to 9.5 years, who were receiving inpatient or outpatient services at a pediatric rehabilitation unit in Brisbane, Australia. Spearman correlation coefficients between the two tests were greater than

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with intellectual disabilities and related conditions (IDRC) and autism often require dental treatment in surgical settings. Studies of older adults suggest that ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) can reduce costs without reducing quality, but it is unknown whether this is true for children with autism and IDRC and dental surgeries. This study compared outcomes among children with IDRC and autism receiving dental caries-related surgeries at ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs).
METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used Medicaid data from 29 stat

INTRODUCTION: Despite the need for continued support for children with disabilities and their families, COVID-19 has made the support difficult. Telenursing can monitor daily life and support from a remote location, continuously and at a low cost. However, there are few practical reports on its use in children with disabilities.
OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to summarize the published literature on telenursing for children with disabilities in home care settings.
METHODS: We included studies involving children (0-18 years of age) with disabilities and their families and specified telec

Oral health is an essential component of overall health for all individuals. The oral health of children and youth with developmental disabilities (CYDD) involves unique characteristics and needs of which pediatricians and pediatric clinicians can be aware. Risk for oral disease in CYDD is multifactorial and includes underlying medical conditions, medications, and ability to participate in preventive oral health care and treatment, and lack of access to providers is common for this population despite being eligible for Medicaid. Pediatric clinicians are uniquely positioned to support the oral
