The Patient Experience: 5% Povidone-Iodine vs 0.05% Aqueous Chlorhexidine.

Aqueous chlorhexidine (aqCHX) is emerging as a safe and potentially gentler alternative to povidone-iodine (PI) for intravitreal injection anti-sepsis. In a single-center patient survey, we compared experiences with PI (141 patients) and aqCHX (92 patients). Patients receiving aqCHX reported less ocular pain or eye irritation than those receiving PI one hour (2.35 vs 1.45, P = .005) and one day (0.79 vs 0.34, P = .027) after their injection. They also described greater satisfaction with the IVI process (9.70 vs. 9.29, P = .014). A lower frequency of participants experienced worsened vision wit

Wiping Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections Away With Chlorhexidine Gluconate.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) continue to be a concern in health care. According to the Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality, the cost associated with a single CAUTI is estimated to be $13,793 on average but can be as high as $29,743. Decreasing CAUTIs through preventative strategies will benefit both the patient and the healthcare organization. There were limited studies utilizing 2% and 4% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) as an intervention for CAUTI prevention. There was also an insufficient research about indwelling catheters, also known as a Foley catheters, and

A Chlorhexidine Nanocarrier Strategy to Combat Oral Candidiasis Microcosm Biofilms.

Background/Objectives: Nanotherapies are a strategy to combat Candida resistance. This study analyzed the impacts of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) functionalized with a chitosan (CS) layer acting as carriers of chlorhexidine (CHX) on an oral candidiasis microcosm biofilm. Methods: Saliva samples from three healthy donors were used to form biofilms, to which Candida species were added to reproduce an oral candidiasis microcosm. Biofilms were cultivated for 72 h on glass coverslips using an active adhesion model. Biofilms without Candida served as a control model. The nanocarrier loaded with

Efficacy of controlled-release subgingival chlorhexidine to enhance periodontal regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal regeneration success may be limited by placing bone grafts and membranes in infected sites. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that adjunctive subgingival administration of chlorhexidine gelatin bioresorbable chips enhances bone gain when used in conjunction with guided tissue regeneration. METHODS: This was a single center, blinded, 2-arm parallel design study of 44 subjects with one or more sites with probing depth and clinical attachment loss > or = 5 mm following initial therapy and radiographic evidence of bone loss. The patients were randomly

Local delivery of chlorhexidine gluconate (PerioChip) in periodontal maintenance patients.

AIM: The aim of this randomised, split-mouth, single-blind study was to determine the efficacy of controlled-release delivery of chlorhexidine gluconate 2.5 mg (PerioChip) in patients with residual bleeding pockets (>5 mm) at least 3 months following oral hygiene and root debridement phase therapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 26 patients (non-smokers) were screened and potential study sites identified. Clinical parameters recorded at baseline and all subsequent visits were plaque index (PI), pocket probing depth (PPD), bleeding index (BI) and clinical attachment level (CAL). All study sites were de

Anaphylactic reactions in anaesthetised patients - four cases of chlorhexidine allergy.

Chlorhexidine is widely used all over the world in many different preparations. In Denmark chlorhexidine is the standard skin disinfectant used before surgery or invasive procedures and it is widely used in the general population in mouthwash or for disinfection of minor scratches etc. The potential for developing allergy to chlorhexidine is thus great, especially in surgical patients. We have identified four patients with serious allergic reactions in connection with surgery and general anaesthesia, who on subsequent skin testing tested positive for chlorhexidine. Symptoms appeared 20-40 min

Porphyromonas gingivalis outer membrane vesicles promote bacterial resistance to chlorhexidine.

Porphyromonas gingivalis has been frequently associated with some types of periodontal diseases and possesses various mechanisms favoring the pathogenic process. It has been recently observed that vesicles elaborated by P. gingivalis are able to protect bacteria from the bactericidal activity of human serum. The aim of the present investigation was to evaluate the ability of vesicles from P. gingivalis in protecting oral bacteria against chlorhexidine. Data indicate that vesicles released by P. gingivalis may bind chlorhexidine, thus allowing protection for itself and for other oral bacterial

Reducing bacterial aerosol contamination with a chlorhexidine gluconate pre-rinse.

The authors compared the effects of chlorhexidine gluconate, an antiseptic mouthwash with essential oils and water on the bacterial aerosol contamination generated by an air polishing device. Patients rinsed with one of the three solutions before treatment. Bacterial counts collected during the treatment indicate that the chlorhexidine pretreatment rinse was significantly more effective than the other solutions in reducing bacterial aerosols.

Chlorhexidine use after two decades of over-the-counter availability.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a compound with plaque-inhibiting effects and available only by prescription in the United States. In Norway, however, CHX has been dispensed over-the-counter for over 20 years, and this study was undertaken to evaluate dentists' perceptions regarding its indications, usefulness, and side effects. A written questionnaire was sent to a sample of 10% of dentists registered in Norway, 78% of whom (354) responded. Additionally, representatives from 2% of all dental practices in Norway were contacted by telephone. Fourteen percent (14%) of the respondents reported that they n

Chlorhexidine for prevention of neonatal colonization with group B streptococci. II. Chlorhexidine concentrations and recovery of group B streptococci following vaginal washing in pregnant women.

The effect of a single washing of the urogenital tract with 0.5 g/l chlorhexidine was studied in 6 women in weeks 38-40 of pregnancy, among whom 5 were carriers of group B streptococci in urethra and/or cervix. The chlorhexidine concentrations varied between 25 and 200 mg/l during the first hour after washing in 5 of the 6 women, whereas one patient showed concentrations below 25 mg/l. With the exception of one patient, all individuals showed concentrations less than 25 mg/l at 3-24 h after washing. A clear suppression of the number of colony-forming units of GBS was already apparent after 60

Can chlorhexidine mouthwash twice daily ameliorate cyclosporine-induced gingival overgrowth?

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Gingival overgrowth can be induced in patients treated with cyclosporine-A (CsA), an immunosuppressant often used following organ transplantation. A pre-existing rat model designed to mimic CsA-induced gingival overgrowth in humans was used to test the effectiveness of frequent application of a chlorhexidine antiplaque solution in reducing the overgrowth. METHODS: Four groups of rats were fed CsA. One group received chlorhexidine mouthwash twice a day, the second group received chlorhexidine mouthwash once a day, the third group received chlorhexidine mouthwash every other
