Coregulation of dimorphism and symbiosis by cyclic AMP signaling in the lichenized fungus Umbilicaria muhlenbergii.

Umbilicaria muhlenbergii is the only known dimorphic lichenized fungus that grows in the hyphal form in lichen thalli but as yeast cells in axenic cultures. However, the regulation of yeast-to-hypha transition and its relationship to the establishment of symbiosis are not clear. In this study, we show that nutrient limitation and hyperosmotic stress trigger the dimorphic change in U. muhlenbergii Contact with algal cells of its photobiont Trebouxia jamesii induced pseudohyphal growth. Treatments with the cAMP diphosphoesterase inhibitor IBMX (3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine) induced pseudohyphal/h

Prevalence of toxin-producing Clostridium botulinum associated with the macroalga Cladophora in three Great Lakes: growth and management.

The reemergence of avian botulism caused by Clostridium botulinum type E has been observed across the Great Lakes in recent years. Evidence suggests an association between the nuisance algae, Cladophora spp., and C. botulinum in nearshore areas of the Great Lakes. However, the nature of the association between Cladophora and C. botulinum is not fully understood due, in part, to the complex food web interactions in this disease etiology. In this study, we extensively evaluated their association by quantitatively examining population size and serotypes of C. botulinum in algal mats collected fro

Combination of a higher-tier flow-through system and population modeling to assess the effects of time-variable exposure of isoproturon on the green algae Desmodesmus subspicatus and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.

A flow-through system was developed to investigate the effects of time-variable exposure of pesticides on algae. A recently developed algae population model was used for simulations supported and verified by laboratory experiments. Flow-through studies with Desmodesmus subspicatus and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata under time-variable exposure to isoproturon were performed, in which the exposure patterns were based on the results of FOrum for Co-ordination of pesticide fate models and their USe (FOCUS) model calculations for typical exposure situations via runoff or drain flow. Acute and chronic toxicity of four frequently used UV filter substances for Desmodesmus subspicatus and Daphnia magna.

As a consequence of growing public concern about UV radiation effects on human health chemical and physical UV filters are increasingly used in personal care and other products. The release of these lipophilic and often persistent compounds into surface waters may pose a risk for aquatic organisms. The aim of the study was to determine effects of four frequently used UV filters on primary aquatic producers and consumers, the green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus and the crustacean Daphnia magna. Exposure to benzophenone 3 (BP3), ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate (EHMC), 3-benzylidene camphor (3-BC) and

Methylmercury enters an aquatic food web through acidophilic microbial mats in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

Microbial mats are a visible and abundant life form inhabiting the extreme environments in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), WY, USA. Little is known of their role in food webs that exist in the Park's geothermal habitats. Eukaryotic green algae associated with a phototrophic green/purple Zygogonium microbial mat community that inhabits low-temperature regions of acidic (pH approximately 3.0) thermal springs were found to serve as a food source for stratiomyid (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) larvae. Mercury in spring source water was taken up and concentrated by the mat biomass. Monomethylmercury comp

The actions of calmodulin antagonists W-7 and TFP and of calcium on the gating kinetics of the calcium-activated large conductance potassium channel of the chara protoplasmic drop: a substate-sensitive analysis.

The effects of the calmodulin antagonists W-7 and trifluoperazine have been measured on the Ca2+-activated potassium channel in the membrane surrounding protoplasmic drops expressed from internodal cells of charophyte plants. The large-conductance (170 pS), voltage- and Ca2+-dependent gating, and prominent conductance substrate of this channel shows a strong kinetic resemblance to those of the Maxi-K channel from animal cells. This is the first study of the action of calmodulin antagonists which measures their effects on the most populated substates as well as the closed and main open states o

The 520 nm absorbance changes in Scenedesmus obliquus and its relation to photosystem I.

The kinetics (region of seconds) of the light-induced 520 nm absorbance changes and its dark reversal have been studied in detail in the wild type and in some pigment and photosynthetic mutants of Scenedesmus obliquus. The following 5 lines of evidence led us to conclude that the signal is entirely due to the photosystem I reaction modified by electron flow from Photosystem II. Gradual blocking of the electron transport with 3(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea resulted in diminution and ultimate elimination of the biphasic nature of the signal without reducing the extent of the absorbance c

Synergetic effects of Ulva lactuca and Pterocladiella capillacea on the multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

BACKGROUND: The potential of marine algae as a source of antibacterial chemicals has been very promising. Numerous bioactive compounds produced by these organisms can fight off harmful microorganisms. Two marine algae (Chlorophyta: Ulva lactuca, Rhodophyta: Pterocladiella capillacea) were screened for their antibacterial activity against distinct multidrug-resistant bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae. This efficiency is ascribed to the bioactive substances found in these algae, which have the ability to stop the growth of this harmful bacteria. Pterocladiella capillacea is a viable target for the

Aquatic toxicity of the macrolide antibiotic clarithromycin and its metabolites.

The human macrolide antibiotic clarithromycin is widespread in surface waters. Our study shows that its major metabolite 14-hydroxy(R)-clarithromycin is found in surface waters in comparable amounts. This metabolite is known to be pharmacologically active. Additionally, clarithromycin is partly metabolised to N-desmethyl-clarithromycin, which has no antimicrobial activity. For clarithromycin, some ecotoxicological studies on aquatic organisms have been published. However, many of them are not conform with the scientific principles as given in the "Technical guidance for deriving environmental

Genomic insights into bacterial communities of coenocytic algae using metagenome-assembled genomes.

Coenocytic algae are organisms that undergo karyokinesis without cytokinesis, resulting in multinucleated cells. Most research on bacterial communities in coenocytic algae has used 16S rRNA sequencing, primarily focusing on the order Bryopsidales of green coenocytic algae. Recent studies have analyzed metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from algal hosts across multiple taxa, such as Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta, and Rhodophyta, revealing further insights into bacterial biosynthetic machinery and potential symbiotic relationships. Given the cosmopolitan distribution of coenocytic algae, such as Bryo

Nature-based solution-inspired electroactive ecological floating bed: a technology for carbon-nitrogen removal and ecological performance assessment in aquaculture Tailwater.

The remediation of polluted aquaculture water and sediment, which severely threatens aquatic ecosystems, is of paramount importance. In this study, a Nature-based Solution (NbS) of electroactive ecological floating bed coupled with an oxygen-producing submerged plants system (EEFB-PS) was designed, where a conductive floating-bed matrix functioned as an integrated biocathode embedded within the rhizosphere and was coupled to the anode in the sediment. Under a 12 h light/dark condition, submerged plants induced diel DO oscillations that enabled nitrification in the daytime and electroautotrophi

Spatiotemporal dynamics of cyanobacterial blooms in the middle and lower reaches of the Xin River (Jiangxi, China) and their driving factors.

This study analyzed phytoplankton monitoring data (2019-2023) from the middle-lower reaches of the Xin River to clarify cyanobacterial spatiotemporal distributions and their environmental drivers. Sixty-six phytoplankton genera across seven phyla were detected, with Chlorophyta being the dominant phylum, followed sequentially by Bacillariophyta and cyanobacteria. The inter-annual variation of phytoplankton biomass ranged from 2.42 to 11.46 mg/L, while the cyanobacteria biomass varied from 0 to 2.63 mg/L, accounting for 7.54% of the total phytoplankton biomass. The dominant cyanobacteria specie

Evaluation of algal biofilms on indium tin oxide (ITO) for use in biophotovoltaic platforms based on photosynthetic performance.

In photosynthesis, a very small amount of the solar energy absorbed is transformed into chemical energy, while the rest is wasted as heat and fluorescence. This excess energy can be harvested through biophotovoltaic platforms to generate electrical energy. In this study, algal biofilms formed on ITO anodes were investigated for use in the algal biophotovoltaic platforms. Sixteen algal strains, comprising local isolates and two diatoms obtained from the Culture Collection of Marine Phytoplankton (CCMP), USA, were screened and eight were selected based on the growth rate, biochemical composition

Trophic exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of nanoplastics induces slight modulation of the antioxidant system in the estuarine bivalve Scrobicularia plana.

Plastic contamination is increasingly recognized as a critical issue in estuarine ecosystems, posing potential threats to aquatic organisms. Although estuaries represent key transition zones for plastics moving from continental sources to the ocean, their ecological fate and effects in these environments remain insufficiently studied. In particular, the trophic transfer of micro- and nanoplastics (NPs) through trophic chains and the associated health risks are still poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the ecotoxicological consequences of trophic exposure to different types of nanopla

Insights into degradation pathways and toxicity changes during electro-catalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride.

The removal of antibiotics has attracted much attention due to their extremely high adverse impacts on the environment. However, the potential risks of degradation intermediates are seldom reported. In this work, the influence of different factors on the electro-catalytic degradation efficiency of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) by the prepared carbon nanotubes/agarose/indium tin oxide (CNTs/AG/ITO) electrode was investigated. Under optimal conditions (10 wt% CNTs dosage, pH = 7), the maximum degradation efficiency for TCH (10 mg L-1) reached up to 96% within 30 min treatment with 4 V potenti

Influence of microplastics on the toxicity of the pharmaceuticals procainamide and doxycycline on the marine microalgae Tetraselmis chuii.

Microplastics and pharmaceuticals are considered ubiquitous and emergent pollutants of high concern but the knowledge on their effects on primary producers is still limited, especially those caused by mixtures. Thus, the goal of the present study was to investigate if the presence of microplastics (1-5 μm diameter) influences the toxicity of the pharmaceuticals procainamide and doxycycline to the marine microalga Tetraselmis chuii. Bioassays (96 h) to investigate the toxicity of those substances individually and in mixtures (i.e. microplastics-procainamide mixtures and microplastics-doxycyclin

Evaluation of copper toxicity using site specific algae and water chemistry: Field validation of laboratory bioassays.

Studies of metal toxicity to microalgae have predominantly been conducted using single non-target algae species and without due regard for the chemistry of the treated waters, leading to ineffective or excessive algaecide treatments. In this study, indigenous multi-algal species (Scenedesmus quadricauda, and Scenedesmus subspicatus and Oscillatoria agardhii) were used in laboratory toxicity bioassays under simulated field water chemistry (pH = 7.2, hardness = 196 mg L-1 as CaCO3, and alkalinity = 222 mg L-1 as CaCO3) to determine the optimum copper sulfate treatment dose to control algae growt
