Cystic dissemination of choroid plexus papilloma: illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus papillomas are benign tumors of the choroid plexus. Although typically focal, they can metastasize. Rarely, patients may present with numerous cystic lesions throughout the craniospinal axis. OBSERVATIONS: The authors present three cases of pathologically confirmed fourth ventricular World Health Organization (WHO) grade 1 choroid plexus papillomas presenting with numerous cystic lesions throughout the craniospinal axis. Two cases were treated with only resection of the fourth ventricular mass; one was treated with a partial cyst fenestration. During follow-up, ther

Infantile Choroid Plexus Papilloma with Multiple Peritumoral Cysts.

Infantile choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) associated with multiple peritumoral cysts is a rare variant of CPP, and clinical course and optimal management are largely unknown. A 9-month-old boy presented with a large solid tumor in the left lateral ventricle associated with multiple peritumoral cysts, arachnoid cysts, and hydrocephalus containing xanthochromic fluid with high protein content. Shrinkage of these cysts and resolution of hydrocephalus were achieved after total resection of the hypervascular solid part of the tumor. Histological examination confirmed the solid part of the tumor as C

Macrophages on the margin: choroid plexus immune responses.

The choroid plexus (ChP), an epithelial bilayer containing a network of mesenchymal, immune, and neuronal cells, forms the blood-cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) barrier (BCSFB). While best recognized for secreting CSF, the ChP is also a hotbed of immune cell activity and can provide circulating peripheral immune cells with passage into the central nervous system (CNS). Here, we review recent studies on ChP immune cells, with a focus on the ontogeny, development, and behaviors of ChP macrophages, the principal resident immune cells of the ChP. We highlight the implications of immune cells for ChP bar

Pathophysiology of the choroid plexus in brain diseases.

The choroid plexus, located in the ventricular system of the central nervous system (CNS), obtains numerous roles critical for the proper development and operating of the CNS. The functions range from the best-known ones of the barrier and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) producer, through participation in immune answer, 'nourishment, detoxification and reparation of the rest of the CNS. Increase number of studies point out the association between choroid plexus dysfunction, characterized by alterations in secretory, transport and barrier capabilities, and the broad spectrum of clinical conditions, a

Spinal ectopic choroid plexus papilloma in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old male neutered Russian Blue cat was presented with a 2-month history of progressive non-ambulatory paraparesis. Spinal MRI revealed a well-demarcated, compressive intradural extramedullary mass at the level of T1 vertebra. The mass had subtle hyperintensity on T2-weighted images, was isointense on T1-weighted images and had diffuse, marked enhancement following gadolinium administration. Neuroaxis MRI, including limited brain sequences, excluded other visible lesions. Thoracic and abdominal radiographs were unremarkable. The mass was resected via a dorsal C7-T2 lamin

Intra-fourth-ventricular choroid plexus papilloma miming ependymoma.

Choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), a low incidence central nervous system (CNS) tumor, typically develops as an intraventricular neoplasm arising from the epithelium of the choroid plexus. Infratentorial CPP is predominantly clustered in adults with roughly 70% in the fourth ventricle, while supratentorial CPP commonly found in the lateral ventricles, is the most frequent location in children. The clinical and imaging features of CPP are not typical and may induce the misdiagnosis as other types of primary brain tumors. In this paper, we described a fourth-ventricular CPP that was misdiagnosed as

Choroid Plexus Enlargement and Allostatic Load in Schizophrenia.

Although schizophrenia is a brain disorder, increasing evidence suggests that there may be body-wide involvement in this illness. However, direct evidence of brain structures involved in the presumed peripheral-central interaction in schizophrenia is still unclear. Seventy-nine previously treatment-naïve first-episode schizophrenia patients who were within 2-week antipsychotics initial stabilization, and 41 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Group differences in subcortical brain regional structures measured by MRI and the subclinical cardiovascular, metabolic, i

Unusual Intraventricular Tumor Mimicker; Choroid Plexus Arteriovenous Malformation.

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are basically abnormal vessel networks consisting of one or more feeding arteries, central nidus, and dilated drainage veins. They are divided into subtypes as fistulose, mixed (fistulose-plexiform), or plexiform. Intraventricular location of AVMs is unusual. In this location, the lesion may mimic neoplastic processes. Here the authors reported uncommon case of an AVM located in the right choroid plexus presenting with intraventricular hemorrhage.

Choroid plexus in the eye: a case study.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this report is to describe a pediatric case of total retinal detachment (RD) with secondary glaucoma in the setting of posterior coloboma with the metaplastic retinal pigment epithelium showing abrupt transition to choroid plexus tissue. METHODS: Retrospective case report. RESULTS: A 3-month-old patient presented with leukocoria and enlarged right eye. She was found to have a funnel RD with anterior displacement of lens-iris diaphragm and secondary glaucoma. Orbital imaging ruled out retinoblastoma, and posterior coloboma was identified. Intraocular pressures remained

Obliteration of the choroid plexus after endoscopic coagulation.

OBJECT: Endoscopic choroid plexus coagulation (CPC) with or without endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) has been shown to be effective for selected patients with hydrocephalus. However, whether the effect of the coagulation is temporary and the choroid plexus regenerates or can be obliterated has remained largely unknown. The authors evaluate the effectiveness of CPC and report 3 cases of obliteration demonstrated by direct endoscopic observation. METHODS: The authors retrospectively analyzed the surgical results of patients with hydrocephalus primarily treated by CPC with or without ETV.

Sudden death from ruptured choroid plexus arteriovenous malformation.

Brain vascular malformations are recognized as having potential to produce hemorrhage, but leading to sudden death in children is uncommon. Arteriovenous malformations may be situated in any region of the brain, but very rarely, they can be restricted to the choroid plexus. We report here a rare case of sudden death in a child, caused by a ruptured vascular malformation with an unusual location, which was not identified grossly but only on histological examination. The size and the location of the lesion, as well as the age of our patient, were contributing factors of the massive bleeding. Aut

Primary choroid plexus papilloma of the sellar region.

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus papillomas are rare tumors of the central nervous system and are usually confined to the ventricle system. We describe a choroid plexus papilloma located in the sella turcica that was identified pathologically. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 49-year-old woman with a 5-year history of progressive visual deterioration in the left eye was admitted to our hospital. Neurological examination found no abnormality except for the perception of light and secondary optic atrophy in her left eye. Careful endocrine testing did not show any hormone excess or deficiency of the pituitary and

Metastatic atypical choroid plexus papilloma: a case report.

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are rare adult tumours and metastatic disease is even less common, more typically associated with choroid plexus carcinoma. We present the case of a 32-year-old patient with multiple metastases arising along the length of the neuraxis 3 years after resection of an atypical fourth ventricular CPP. Metastatic deposits were found from the mid-brain to the lumbar cistern and the patient underwent repeat excision of the fourth ventricular tumour, partial resection of a cervico-thoracic deposit and craniospinal radiotherapy. Possible explanations for the rarity of at

Choroid plexus histoplasmoma: clinical, pathologic, and imaging findings.

Histoplasmosis of the choroid plexus has not previously been described. We report its occurrence, as well as its clinical, pathologic, and imaging characteristics in one case. Clinically, our patient's choroid plexus lesion produced encephalopathy and third nerve palsy. On imaging it appeared as a hemorrhage or calcification. Cerebrospinal fluid studies were consistent with a chronic meningeal process uncomplicated by hemorrhage. Stereotactic biopsy of the choroid plexus was required to establish the diagnosis of cerebral histoplasmosis. Pathologic examination also revealed prominent abnormal

Intraventricular rhabdomyosarcoma after resection of hyperplastic choroid plexus.

Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma is extremely rare. Here, a case that is most consistent with a botryoid rhabdomyosarcoma is described in a 4.5-year-old boy. The case is unique because it was preceded by a congenital Dandy-Walker malformation, choroid plexus hyperplasia and an enormous oversecretion of cerebrospinal fluid during infancy.

Choroid plexus cysts: not associated with Down syndrome.

We sought to determine whether there is an association between choroid plexus cysts identified in the second-trimester fetus and trisomy 21. Over a 7-year period, fetuses scanned between 14 and 22 weeks were prospectively evaluated for the presence of choroid plexus cysts. Follow-up on fetuses with choroid plexus cysts was obtained by review of the medical records. Over the same time period, the scans and reports of all fetuses with trisomy 21 detected in our laboratory by mid-trimester amniocentesis were reviewed. The prevalence of choroid plexus cysts in fetuses with and without trisomy 21 w

[Amniocentesis and single choroid plexus cyst. Current status].

Management of a patient with a diagnosed choroid plexus cyst (CPC) is probably one of the most difficult of all prenatal diagnostic problems. Similarity between the risk of chromosomopathy due to the appearance of CPC only and the risk of fetal mortality due to amniocentesis (both being about 1/200) is such that an individual approach must be adopted in each case. The couple must be given a full explanation of all the details, which will enable them to finally decide whether a conservative attitude is appropriate or, on the contrary, if a specific diagnosis should be sought by amniocentesis.
