HIGHER SUBFOVEAL CHOROIDAL THICKNESS IN CHOROIDAL MELANOMAS THAN IN CHOROIDAL NEVI.

PURPOSE: To compare subfoveal choroidal thickness between eyes with choroidal melanoma and choroidal nevi. METHODS: Retrospective study of 126 consecutive patients in a tertiary ocular oncology center. Eyes with tumors located less than two disk diameters from the fovea were excluded. In eyes with nevi, factors of potential transformation into melanoma were recorded (orange pigment, subretinal fluid, thickness >2 mm, diameter >5 mm, ultrasound hollowness). Subfoveal choroidal thickness was assessed by three independent observers on horizontal spectral-domain optical coherence tomography scans

Choroidal detachment and expulsive choroidal hemorrhage.

ECH occurring during open globe surgery is no longer synonymous with loss of the eye. If the eye is closed immediately (i.e., the hemorrhage does not become expulsive) and modern secondary reconstruction techniques are applied, the prognosis is good. Prophylaxis, however, is the ultimate goal, achieved by a conscious consideration of all risk factors and planning of the surgical intervention accordingly ECH nevertheless can occur, for which the surgeon must be mentally prepared and then act swiftly, based on a previously designed strategy. All ophthalmologists performing (especially open globe

[Choroidal neovascularization associated with choroidal nevi].

Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) is a pathological angiogenic process observed in various fundus diseases, including choroidal nevi. This article reviews key information on the pathogenesis of CNV associated with choroidal nevi, examines diagnostic methods using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A), including modern classifications and criteria for assessing disease activity. The article also discusses approaches to the differential diagnosis of nevi combined with neovascular age-related macular degeneration, progressive nevi, and melanomas,

Pituitary abscess, plexus-choroiditis and encephalitis by Helcococcus ovis in a calf.

We report here the first confirmed case of a pituitary abscess in a calf caused by Helcococcus ovis, an emerging pyogenic bacterium in veterinary medicine. An 8-month-old calf showed progressive neurological signs following the use of a nose ring. Gross and histopathological examination revealed a large abscess in the pituitary gland accompanied by leptomeningitis, encephalitis, and plexus choroiditis. Helcococcus ovis was isolated from the pituitary abscess and identified by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry with high confidence. Coccoid gram-positive bacteria were observed on gram stain of formali

A case of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome accompanied by subclinical choroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome is an uveits characterized by complications of idiopathic acute tubulointerstitial nephritis, and most cases present only anterior uveitis. We report a case of TINU syndrome in which the presence of choroiditis was revealed by multimodal imaging. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old male visited our hospital with a 6-day history of ocular pain and hyperemia. Conjunctival and ciliary injections, 1 + flare and 3 + cells of anterior chamber inflammation with mutton fat keratic precipitates were observed in both eyes (OU), together

Presumed tubercular retinal vasculitis with serpiginous-like choroiditis in the other eye.

A 17-year old boy, with decreased vision in right eye for 15 days, presented with retinal periphlebitis in multiple quadrants of the right eye and partially active serpiginous-like choroiditis in the left eye. Tuberculin test was positive (16 mm induration), and chest X-ray showed hilar lymphadenopathy. The patient was treated with a 9-month course of anti-tubercular therapy and a tapering dose of oral corticosteroids. Both retinal vasculitis and choroiditis lesions resolved over 3-4 months. Retinal neovascularization in the right eye was treated with laser photocoagulation. There was no recur

Necrotizing choroiditis-retinitis as presenting symptom of disseminated aspergillosis after lung transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous endophthalmitis due to Aspergillus is rare affecting the severely immunosuppressed population, in particular recipients of heart and lung transplants. Ocular involvement of aspergillosis has always been observed late in the course of the disease. SUBJECT: A young woman noted blurred vision in one eye three weeks after lung transplantation. At this stage, no systemic manifestations of fungal infection were detected and the ocular findings were attributed to viral infection. RESULTS: Twenty-four hours after the original ocular complaint, an aggressive endophthalmitis dev

Differential diagnosis of retinitis and choroiditis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are at high risk for developing retinitis. The most common forms of retinitis in such patients are those caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Toxoplasma; however, retinitis or choroiditis can also be caused by other viral, protozoal, bacterial, and fungal agents. Differential diagnosis of these infections is based on a number of factors, including ophthalmoscopic appearance, underlying disease, clinical history, and severity of underlying immunosuppression. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential in preserving functional vision, as some

[Multifocal inner choroiditis: pseudohistoplasmosis. The European form of the presumed American histoplasmosis].

We studied nine patients with the picture of presumed ocular histoplasmosis. All patients had the characteristic triad: punched out peripheral lesions, peripapillary atrophic scar and disciform process in the posterior pole. All patients had negative test for histoplasmosis (electrosyneresis). Four patients were observed for a long period (8, 8, 7 and 4 years). In two cases we could observe the first step of the basic choroidal lesions. One of these patients fundus was previously normal. Age, female to male ratio and in one case mild inflammatory lesions were similar to a new entity: multifoca
