A detailed study of the gas chromatography of the aluminium(III), chromium(III) and iron(III) beta-diketonates has shown that their elution and separation characteristics arise from a number of adsorptive effects. Osha root (Ligusticum porteri) is a perennial herb found in parts of the Rocky Mountains. It is used as an immune booster and a treatment for colds, flus, indigestion, and body aches. In this study we determined compounds present in osha root from the San Juan Mountains in Southwestern Colorado by Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry. Extractions were performed using hexane and methanol solvents at room temperature. Some thirty to forty compounds were detected. Eleven compounds with a high search indices are discussed and compared with previous studies.

This paper reports a corrosion problem in the headspace sampling needle when using a phase reaction conversion headspace gas chromatographic method in Agilent headspace auto-sampler. The examination by microscopy shows that corrosion mainly takes place on the surface of the outer wall of the needle that is exposed to the air during each headspace sampling. Since it was proven that the helium flushing is effective in minimizing the pit type of corrosion on the stainless needle material, a custom-made surface flushing device was proposed for corrosion inhibition.

A reliable and sensitive method has been developed to assess the concentrations of the hypnotic drug triazolam in human tissues, including putrefied tissues. The method involves a 3-step solvent extraction, clean-up on a silica gel column and gas chromatography using a nitrogen phosphorus detector and a capillary column. Estazolam was used as an internal standard. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range 1 ng/g-1 microgram/g and the lower limit of detection was 0.5 ng/g. A forensic study was performed on the toxicological effects of triazolam using putrefied tissues.

A novel assay method for the determination of atropine in biological fluids is presented. Atropine is extracted and subsequently hydrolyzed. The generated tropine is them derivatized to heptafluorobutyryl-tropine, which is measured by GLC-MS. Base peaks m/z 124 and m/z 127 are simultaneously monitored. Alkylation of barbituric acids and diphenylhydantoin with pentafluorobenzyl bromide is described; the reaction is quantitative in the presence of excess of triethylamine. The electron-capture detector response of the derivatives is high, ranging from 2 to 8 x 10(-17) moles/sec. The derivatives demonstrate excellent peak symmetry and are well suited to quantitative analysis. The structures of the derivatives have been confirmed by mass spectrometry.
