Service failures and challenges in responding to people bereaved through drugs and alcohol: An interprofessional analysis.

This article reports findings from the first two stages of a three-stage qualitative study which considered the role of services, including public, private and charitable organisations, in responding to the needs of adults bereaved following the drug and/or alcohol-related death of someone close. The study, the first of its kind to explore the landscape and role of services in substance use deaths, was conducted over two sites: south west England and Scotland. In stage 1 of the research, adopting both convenience and purposive sampling, data were collected via semi-structured interviews on exp

Case study of a chaplain's spiritual care for a patient with advanced metastatic breast cancer.

The case study seeks to describe an oncology chaplain's pastoral relationship with a 64-year-old woman with advanced metastatic breast cancer. The patient's distress was complicated by a history of anxiety and other chronic medical conditions. Approximately 16 pastoral encounters occurred during the last year of the patient's life. The patient, chaplain, and the pastoral conversations are presented as well as a retrospective assessment of them. The chaplain's interventions were appropriate for the patient's spiritual needs, particularly in regard to her fear of death, loneliness, grief that he

Knowledge and use of medicinal plants by people around Debre Libanos monastery in Ethiopia.

The study was conducted around Debre Libanos monastery from October 2005 to June 2006. A total of 250 villagers, 13 monks and 3 nuns were interviewed using semistructured questionnaire on the knowledge and use of medicinal plants. The informant consensus factor (ICF) and the fidelity level (FL) of the species were determined. Eighty medicinal plant species were reported. The average medicinal plant reported by a female is 1.67+/-0.33 and a male is 5.77+/-0.71 with significant difference between them (alpha=0.05, p=0.023). The ICF values demonstrated that local people tend to agree more with ea

Remedies for Kidney Ailments in Physica by Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179).

OBJECTIVES: Hildegard von Bingen (Hildegardis Bingensis; Saint Hildegard), the Sibyl of the Rhine (AD 1098-1179), was a Benedictine abbess, musician, poet, writer, counselor, and healer. As an influential personality of the 12th century, she was advisor of kings, princes, and bishops. Her medical work is collected in 2 books (AD 1152-1163): Physica and Causae et Curae. We aimed to investigate the characteristics of the nephrology-oriented remedies in Physica and compare these with the respective remedies in De Materia Medica (AD 1st century) by Dioscorides Pedanios Anazarbeus. Domestic violence on pregnant women in Abuja, Nigeria.

Violence against women is a human rights violation, which is increasingly becoming a serious public health issue. When it occurs in pregnant women, victims are recognised to be at higher risk of complications of pregnancy. A cross-sectional questionnaire survey was carried out over a 3-month period from May to July 2005 to document the prevalence, knowledge and perception of domestic violence (DV) on pregnant women attending the antenatal clinic of the National Hospital, Abuja, Nigeria. The mean age of the respondents was 31.5 +/- 4.25 years, with a range of 20 - 42 years. Most (85.2%) had att

[Eye witnesses and the flagellants in the year 1349].

Deeply affected and often desperately afraid, many contemporaries recorded their observations and emotions. These reports--no matter how obviously subjective they sometimes were--provide valuable information about what happened during the plague pandemic of 1348-1350. Thus many of our fellow countrymen left behind a direct testimony: Bartholomew of Bruges, a canon in Andenne; Gilles li Muisis, the abbot of Saint Martin in Tournai; Ludovicus Sanctus of Beringen; Simon de Couvin, a canon in Liège; Jan van Boendale, an alderman's clerk in Antwerp; John of Burgundy (also known as John of Mandevill

Development and validation of the questionnaire "Spiritual Needs in Palliative Care" in Finnish.

OBJECTIVES: Spiritual care is a core element of palliative care, addressing religious, spiritual and existential concerns and enhancing quality of life. In Finland, systematic assessment of patients' spiritual needs is limited due to the lack of a validated instrument. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate the Spiritual Needs in Palliative Care (SNPC) questionnaire for Finnish palliative care patients. METHODS: A prospective, multi-phase validation study, included item generation, expert review, pilot testing, and psychometric evaluation. Content and construct validity, as

Child sexual abuse by different classes and types of perpetrator: Prevalence and trends from an Australian national survey.

BACKGROUND: Little evidence exists about the prevalence of child sexual abuse (CSA) inflicted by different relational classes of perpetrators (e.g., parents; institutional adults; adolescents), and by individual types of perpetrators (e.g., fathers and male relatives; male teachers and male clergy; known and unknown adolescents). OBJECTIVE: To generate evidence of the prevalence of CSA by different perpetrators, and trends by victim gender and age group. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The Australian Child Maltreatment Study collected information about CSA victimisation from a nationally-represent

Sleep complaints and incident disability in a community-based cohort study of older persons.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep complaints are associated with adverse health consequences. We hypothesized that non-disabled older persons with more sleep complaints have an increased risk of developing disability. METHODS: Subjects included 908 older clergy participating in the Religious Order Study without clinical dementia, history of stroke, or Parkinson disease. At baseline, participants rated their difficulty falling asleep, frequency of nocturnal awakenings, sleep efficacy, and napping frequency, from which a summary dyssomnia measure was derived. Self-report assessment of disability included instru

Love, Judgement and HIV: Congregants' Perspectives on an Intervention for Black Churches to Promote Critical Awareness of HIV Affecting Black Canadians.

We assess participants' experience of Black Pastors Raising Awareness and Insight of Stigma through Engagement (Black PRAISE), an intervention for Black churches to promote critical awareness of HIV affecting Black Canadian communities. We used a community-based participatory approach to implement Black PRAISE among six churches in the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa, in October-November 2016. For the intervention, congregants received a booklet with validated HIV-related information, attended a sermon on compassion and justice, viewed a short film on HIV-related stigma, and completed baseline

Cross-cultural encounters between careproviders: rabbis' referral letters to a psychiatric clinic in Israel.

This paper explores the meaning and social functions of referral letters sent to a mental health clinic in Israel by Haredi (ultra-orthodox) rabbis. The letters exemplify social mechanisms by which various institutions and individuals (careproviders, therapists, and other social actors) negotiate different therapies, advice, and interventions in cross-cultural encounters. We argue that beyond the practical functions of the letters, the rabbis-representatives of a "popular" and religious social sphere-use them to negotiate their position in relation to the psychiatric clinic as a representative

Safeguarding in Church: Children and Young People's Perceptions of Safety in Religious and Other Faith-Based Settings.

Organizations that interact with children and young people have a duty of care to ensure the safety of those children and young people from any manner of abuse, particularly from child sexual abuse. Faith-based ("religious") organizations are of particular interest due to the number of victims/survivors speaking out about their experiences of grooming, child sexual abuse, and other forms of harm in religious organizations. Focusing on addressing the risks and improving safeguarding efforts, prevention activities benefit from giving children agency and a voice. We conducted a study using two fo

Mental health service utilization among Korean elders in Korean churches: preliminary findings from the Memory and Aging Study of Koreans in Maryland (MASK-MD).

BACKGROUND: Korean Americans (KA) comprise the fourth largest Asian-American subgroup, with a population estimated at nearly 1.7 million, and the vast majority (up to 85%) of KA elders attends ethnic churches. Despite the rapid increase of the KA elderly population, data on mental health service utilization among KA elders are scarce. METHOD: Based on a cluster sampling method, the Memory and Aging Study among Koreans in Maryland (MASK-MD) recruited and assessed 630 KA elders (mean age: 70.9 ± 6.1 years; 68.9% female) in KA churches for depression, dementia, and level of mental health service

Stopping nutrition and hydration technologies: a conflict between traditional Catholic ethics and church authority.

This article focuses on the troubling effects of the secular values of individual freedom and autonomy and their impact on laws regarding suicide and euthanasia. The author argues that in an increasingly secularized culture, death and dying are losing their meaning and are not thought of within a moral framework. The debate regarding the provision of artificial nutrition and hydration is critically considered in light of the history of Catholic morality as well as within the modern healthcare context, and finally with new insight from the recent statements made by the late pope. Drane argues t

Consent Practices for Unrepresented Patients After Implementation of Dual-Physician Authorization in a Safety-Net Healthcare System.

BACKGROUND: Unrepresented patients, those lacking decision-making capacity and an available legally authorized surrogate, experience significant ethical and clinical vulnerabilities, including delays in care and high-intensity decision-making. Physicians often assume decisional authority for these patients, yet empirical data on how institutional consent frameworks influence physician behavior are limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine changes in the frequency and types of non-emergent routine procedural consents for unrepresented patients before and after a policy shift from clergy-based consent to

Exploring nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and competence in holistic palliative care management in Papua New Guinea: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is crucial for enhancing the quality of life for terminally ill patients, like those with cancer, but only 14% of those in need receive it, especially in resource-limited areas like Papua New Guinea (PNG). In 2018, PNG reported 7,477 cancer deaths and 11,913 new cases, with a projected 79% increase in patients by 2040. Nurses are vital to palliative care, yet gaps in competencies, particularly in pain management, affect care quality. This study aims to evaluate nurses’ knowledge, attitudes, and competencies in palliative care in PNG, considering the unique challenge

Adjuncts to opioid therapy.

Administration of opioids to alleviate moderate to severe acute pain and chronic cancer pain is an established management process. However, advancements in clinical pharmacologic research have shown that opioids are also effective in chronic noncancerous pain. Many patients properly treated for prolonged periods with opioids develop tolerance and subsequently, physical dependence. This process is not necessarily harmful to the patient and will not cause the patient to develop an addiction (properly defined as psychologic dependence). For many patients who have been on opioid therapy for months
