Pathogens have traditionally been studied in isolation within host systems; yet in natural settings they frequently coexist. This raises questions about the dynamics of co-infections and how host life-history traits might predict co-infection versus single infection. To address these questions, we investigated the presence of two parasites, a gut parasite (Isospora coccidians) and a blood parasite (Plasmodium spp.), in House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), a common passerine bird in North America. We then correlated these parasitic infections with various health and condition metrics, includin

Toxoplasmosis is an emerging and re-emerging infectious disease that can be transmitted through a contaminated environment. Environmental contamination is an emergency health issue, and determining its occurrence is fundamental to a One Health approach. In this study, we addressed the extent of environmental contamination and viability of Toxoplasma gondii oocysts in soil in different environments on Fernando de Noronha Island, Brazil. In addition, we performed species distribution modelling to predict the environmental suitability for coccidia persistence in the studied area. Soil samples wer

Coccidiosis is an intestinal parasitic infection and one of the most prevalent and economically damaging diseases of chickens. Furthermore, coccidia-induced mucogenesis promotes secondary colonization by Clostridium perfringens, a major pathogen of chickens that causes necrotic enteritis. Our previous work found that supernatant of a culture of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain TOA5001 (BA) inhibited the growth of C. perfringens on Gifu anaerobic broth medium. Accordingly, we evaluated the effectiveness of dietary BA administration in inhibiting C. perfringens colonization of the intestine in

Not later than 1842 medico-mycological investigations began at Greifswald in Germany following the appointment of Wilhelm Baum (1799-1883) to the chair of surgery at the university. This is indicated by some theses as well as by the discovery of the contagious characteristics of pityriasis versicolor by Carl Ferdinand Eichstedt (1816-1892) who found a fungus as the cause (1846), which was named Microsporon furfur later (C. Robin 1853). In 1868 the physician (Karl) Friedrich Mosler (1831-1911) published clinical-mycological studies and investigations on animal feeding with yeasts. Some time lat

The study of 11 cases of isosporiasis (Isospora belli) shows that this opportunistic coccidia, alone or with Cryptosporidium, causes severe prolonged diarrhoea which worsens the prognosis and evolution of AIDS patients. A low prevalence (0.7%) is found in subjects from tropical regions. The results of treatment are disappointing. Bactrim is the only drug found to be effective but prolonged parasitological surveillance is required to detect the frequent relapses, and assess the long-time usefulness of this drug.

INTRODUCTION: The lobster cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea (N. cinerea) is indicated as a promising non-mammalian model, because it presents behavioral and biochemical alterations also observed in conventional models. In this research, we identified and characterized the distribution of protozoa that inhabit the digestive system (DS) of N. cinerea cockroaches.
METHODS: The adult specimens of N. cinerea used in this study (n = 32) were obtained at the Federal University of Santa Maria, dissected and had their visceral contents observed in bright-field microscopy without staining and after applicati

New treatments for the diseases caused by apicomplexans are needed. Recently, we determined that tartrolon E (trtE), a secondary metabolite derived from a shipworm symbiotic bacterium, has broad-spectrum anti-apicomplexan parasite activity. TrtE inhibits apicomplexans at nM concentrations in vitro, including Cryptosporidium parvum, Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis neurona, Plasmodium falciparum, Babesia spp. and Theileria equi. To investigate the mechanism of action of trtE against apicomplexan parasites, we examined changes in the transcriptome of trtE-treated T. gondii parasites. RNA-Seq data

Fifty cranes, consisting of 46 sandhill (Grus canadensis) and four whooping cranes (Grus americana), were studied. Eighteen sandhill cranes and the four whooping cranes were naturally infected with disseminated visceral coccidiosis (DVC). The remaining sandhill cranes were chicks experimentally infected with oocysts of Eimeria reichenowi and/or E. gruis; five chicks served as controls. There were no clinical signs attributed to respiratory infection. Necropsy of naturally infected adult birds revealed nodules in many organs, including the lung, air sacs, trachea and nares. Artificially infecte

The poultry industry is one of the fastest-growing subsectors in agriculture, serving as a primary source of protein for the increasing global population. However, chickens carry many fatal diseases that compromise their welfare and negatively affect productivity. Among these, coccidiosis, an intestinal disease caused by Eimeria protozoan parasites, affects multiple animal species and represents a major threat to the poultry industry. Eimeria parasites invade the host cell through a distinctive process, depending on gliding motility, and require a transmembrane link between the host cell and p

Using a combination of morphological and molecular data, we describe a new apicomplexan parasite, Isospora svecica sp. n., from the white-spotted bluethroat, Luscinia svecica cyanecula, from the Czech Republic. Oocysts were found in its intestinal tract. Sporulation was exogenous and took 1-3 days. The oocysts were slightly ellipsoidal, of average size 26.17 × 20.33 μm, with a smooth bilayered wall. Micropyle, oocyst residuum, and polar granules were absent. Sporocysts were bottle-shaped, of an average size of 18.82 × 8.82 μm, with a thin, colourless wall. A conspicuous knob-like Stieda body w

Isosporosis is an infection caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Isospora, coccidia affecting various different vertebrate species, including humans. It is an uncommon infection in our country and it is not a zoonosis. We present two cases of Isospora belli infection in HIV positive patients from the Valparaiso region. We discuss the clinical events caused by this agent, its epidemiology, cases published in the local and foreign literature, as well as its treatment and prevention measures.

Kiwi (Apteryx spp.) chicks in conservation captive-rearing programmes commonly suffer from coccidiosis, a parasitic disease that can cause significant morbidity and mortality in young birds. Current management combines preventative husbandry with treatment using coccidiocidal drugs. However, evidence suggests a lack of efficacy of toltrazuril, the primary drug used to treat coccidia, and limited information is available on safe and effective therapeutic alternatives for juvenile kiwi. This study evaluated the prophylactic efficacy of orally administered diclazuril (Coxiril 0.5% (5 g/kg) microG

Although intranuclear coccidiosis was first identified in chelonians less than 30 years ago, it is now considered an important emerging disease. Symptoms include anorexia, weakness and weight loss, potentially leading to death of the infected animal. The use of molecular tools has led to improved diagnosis and has also led to an increase in known host species. Here we report a putative intranuclear coccidium in Mauremys leprosa (Schweigger), from Morocco, based on 18S rDNA sequence analysis. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of this parasite from a freshwater terrapin spe

The mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is a host to internal and external parasites. A heavy parasite burden indicates poor immunological status and a pathogen-contaminated environment. The present study describes the macroscopic and microscopic examination of isolated intestines and gizzards of 130 mallard ducks from birds kept in the breeding farm. Scrapings of intestinal mucosa were examined by flotation and with the sedimentation method. The results of the flotation method indicate the presence of coccidia oocysts in the ileum scrapings from one of five male mallards aged six weeks, one out

Mosquitoes that feed on crocodilians are poorly known, despite the potential role of these exothermic animals as reservoirs of arboviruses. In this article, we assessed the frequency, abundance, and temporal variation of caiman-biting mosquitoes as well as searched for the natural vectors of the blood parasite of caimans, Hepatozoon caimani, in the Pantanal area of central-western Brazil from captures conducted bimonthly from September 2006 to September 2007 and in February 2008. A total of 5,272 mosquitoes belonging to 10 species of five genera was caught on caimans. The most abundant species

A disposable, self-filling micropipette is described for the isolation of single oocysts of chicken coccidia from laboratory stocks. A sterile 1 microliter capillary tube is mounted, using sealing wax, into the narrower end of a broken-off Pasteur pipette. This micropipette is pushed into one end of a 60 cm length of flexible plastic tubing and a 5 cm glass tube is pushed into the other end. The apparatus is used by holding the glass tube in one's mouth, maintaining a positive pressure in the buccal cavity, while the tip of the capillary tube in the micropipette is juxtaposed with a single ooc
