The Effect of Different Coffee Cherry Pulp-Retention Amounts on the Quality of Robusta Green Coffee Beans.

Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora) possesses great industrial potential, whereas its intrinsic flavor defects compromise market competitiveness. Honey processing utilizing residual pulp and mucilage is capable of improving green coffee quality; nevertheless, the absence of quantitative research regarding graded pulp retention limits its industrial application. In this study, fermentation experiments with gradient retention of coffee cherry pulp were conducted to clarify the differential regulatory effects of varying coffee cherry pulp-retention amounts on physicochemical properties, functional

Comparative Metabolomic Profiling of Roasted Coffee Beans From Taiwan and Brazil.

RATIONALE: Taiwan produces high-value specialty coffee on a limited scale, whereas Brazil is the largest global supplier and a major source of imports to Taiwan. For food authenticity, differentiation of roasted coffee from these origins is important. However, few metabolomics-based traceability studies have yet been conducted on Taiwan-roasted coffee. METHODS: In this study, metabolic profiling was applied to evaluate origin-related chemical signatures in Arabica roasted coffee beans from Taiwan and Brazil. An untargeted metabolomic workflow of integrating full scan and data-dependent acquis

Cover trees associations shape bacterial diversity in coffee production systems.

Traditional coffee agroforestry systems often involve shade trees, which play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility and biodiversity. In contrast, monoculture systems negatively influence soil chemistry, microbial diversity, and overall soil health over time. Although the use of cover trees such as mango (Mangifera indica L.) and banana (Musa paradisiaca, var. Cavendish.) has been shown to have beneficial effects on the soil chemical properties, little is known about their influence on microbial communities associated with coffee production systems. The main objective of this study was

Coffee-Derived Phenolic Compounds Activate Nrf2 Antioxidant Pathway in I/R Injury In Vitro Model: A Nutritional Approach Preventing Age Related-Damages.

Age-related injuries are often connected to alterations in redox homeostasis. The imbalance between free radical oxygen species and endogenous antioxidants defenses could be associated with a growing risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke. In this context, a daily supply of dietary antioxidants could counteract oxidative stress occurring during ischemia/reperfusion injury (I/R), preventing brain damage. Here we investigated the potential antioxidant properties of coffee-derived circulating metabolites and a coffee pulp phytoextract, testing their efficacy as ROS scavengers in an in vitro

Cultivable diversity and plant growth-promoting traits of free-living bacteria from coffee soils under contrasting fertilization systems.

Brazilian coffee production relies heavily on mineral fertilizers, particularly nitrogen-based inputs. However, the intensive use of these fertilizers is associated with nutrient losses, elevated production costs, and environmental impacts, highlighting the need for more sustainable alternatives. In this context, plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) represent promising resources for improving nutrient use efficiency and reducing dependence on synthetic inputs. Nevertheless, the cultivable bacterial fraction associated with coffee soils remains poorly characterized under contrasting fertiliza

An Evaluation of the Genetic Diversity of Xylella fastidiosa Isolated from Diseased Citrus and Coffee in São Paulo, Brazil.

ABSTRACT Strains of Xylella fastidiosa, isolated from sweet orange trees (Citrus sinensis) and coffee trees (Coffea arabica) with symptoms of citrus variegated chlorosis and Requeima do Café, respectively, were indistinguishable based on repetitive extragenic palindromic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus PCR assays. These strains were also indistinguishable with a previously described PCR assay that distinguished the citrus strains from all other strains of Xylella fastidiosa. Because we were not able to document any genomic diversity in our co

Chlorantraniliprole: bioactivation in coffee seedlings and control of resistant Leucoptera coffeella populations.

BACKGROUND: The diamide chlorantraniliprole stands out for its high performance in controlling agricultural pests, with high selectivity and reduced environmental impact. In coffee cultivation, this insecticide has been widely employed for the management of the coffee leaf miner (Leucoptera coffeella Guérin-Méneville, 1842). However, intensive use has favored the selection of resistant populations, compromising control efficacy and intensifying biotic stress in plants. This study aimed to evaluate the morphophysiological effects of chlorantraniliprole on coffee seedlings (Coffea arabica L., cv

Rubber intercropping with arboreal and herbaceous species alleviated the global warming potential through the reduction of soil greenhouse gas emissions.

Agroforestry systems are known to enhance soil health and climate resilience, but their impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in rubber-based agroforestry systems across diverse configurations is not fully understood. Here, six representative rubber-based agroforestry systems (encompassing rubber trees intercropped with arboreal, shrub, and herbaceous species) were selected based on a preliminary investigation, including Hevea brasiliensis intercropping with Alpinia oxyphylla (AOM), Alpinia katsumadai (AKH), Coffea arabica (CAA), Theobroma cacao (TCA), Cinnamomum cassia (CCA), and Pandanus

Beyond the buzz: the fatal consequences of caffeine overconsumption.

Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant present in dozens of plant species including Coffea arabica and Camellia sinensis, from which we obtain coffee and tea, respectively. It is one of the world's most widely consumed psychoactive substances frequently used to increase alertness, elevate mood, and ward off fatigue. In traditional preparations, caffeine is generally well-tolerated by the consumer. However, complications can arise with the addition of caffeine to products like energy drinks, medications, and supplements. Furthermore, with pure caffeine accessible online, a consumer may unk

Engineering a microbial platform for de novo biosynthesis of diverse methylxanthines.

Engineered microbial biosynthesis of plant natural products can support manufacturing of complex bioactive molecules and enable discovery of non-naturally occurring derivatives. Purine alkaloids, including caffeine (coffee), theophylline (antiasthma drug), theobromine (chocolate), and other methylxanthines, play a significant role in pharmacology and food chemistry. Here, we engineered the eukaryotic microbial host Saccharomyces cerevisiae for the de novo biosynthesis of methylxanthines. We constructed a xanthine-to-xanthosine conversion pathway in native yeast central metabolism to increase e

Cu-CDs/ABEI@Ag with peroxidase-like catalytic activity for chemiluminescence sensing of glyphosate residues in coffee.

In this study, an "off" signal chemiluminescence (CL) sensor was designed for the detection of glyphosate (Gly) based on Cu-CDs/ABEI@Ag as CL enhancers. Copper-doped carbon dots (Cu-CDs) was synthesized through a sample microwave digestion approach, and AgNO3 was reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) utilizing N-(4-aminobutyl)-N-ethylisoluminol (ABEI) and prepared Cu-CDs as mild reducing agents. The Cu-CDs and AgNPs demonstrated peroxidase (POD)-like properties, facilitating the breakdown of H2O2 into reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as ∙OH, ∙O2-, and 1O2 to generate CL signal.
