Predictors of Outcome among Pathological Gamblers Receiving Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy.

AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate posttreatment changes of individuals with a diagnosis of gambling disorder (GD) treated with group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), to assess the potential moderator effect of sex on CBT outcome, and to explore the best predictors of posttreatment changes, relapse, and dropout rates. METHODS: A cohort design was applied with a prospective follow-up. The sample comprised 440 patients and the CBT intervention consisted of 16 weekly outpatient group sessions and a 3-month follow-up period. RESULTS: Patients showed significant improvements in both t

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Normalizes Functional Connectivity for Social Threat in Psychosis.

Psychosis is often characterized by paranoia and poor social functioning. Neurally, there is evidence of functional dysconnectivity including abnormalities when processing facial affect. We sought to establish whether these abnormalities are resolved by cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis (CBTp). The study involved 38 outpatients with one or more persistent positive psychotic symptoms, and 20 healthy participants. All participants completed an implicit facial affect processing task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Subsequently, patients either continued to receive st

Effects of cognitive behavioral therapy on insomnia of maintenance hemodialysis patients.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy [sleep-related behavior modification and progressive muscle relaxation on insomnia of maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients] on improving insomnia of MHD patients. 103 MHD patients complicated with insomnia were randomly assigned to treatment (n = 52) and control (n = 51) groups. The control group was treated with conventional hemodialysis, and the treatment group was additionally treated with cognitive behavioral therapy for 3 months (sleep-related behavior modification and progressive muscle relaxation).

Weight suppression in bulimia nervosa: relationship with cognitive behavioral therapy outcome.

OBJECTIVE: In light of prior inconsistent findings, this study revisits the relationship between weight suppression and treatment outcome in bulimia nervosa. Aside from differences in methodology, we propose that moderator effects may assist the field in interpreting previous inconsistency. In this study, we considered moderators that might place individuals at risk of broad cognitive and biobehavioral mechanisms implicated in weight (dys)regulation and binge eating, and that within the context of a history of weight suppression, might be associated with especially poor outcomes. METHOD: Part

Cognitive-behavioral therapy for hoarding in the context of contamination fears.

Difficulty discarding and excessive acquiring can be treated using specialized cognitive-behavioral treatment that includes motivational interviewing, skills training, practice sorting and discarding, and cognitive restructuring. Early psychotherapy efforts to treat hoarding have proved less effective than this combination of methods targeted at the characteristic features of hoarding. Treatment strategies are illustrated through a case example of a woman struggling with both hoarding and contamination concerns.

Cognitive behavioral therapy in anxiety disorders: current state of the evidence.

A plethora of studies have examined the efficacy and effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for adult anxiety disorders. In recent years, several meta-analyses have been conducted to quantitatively review the evidence of CBT for anxiety disorders, each using different inclusion criteria for studies, such as use of control conditions or type of study environment. This review aims to summarize and to discuss the current state of the evidence regarding CBT treatment for panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-trau

Changes in emotion regulation following cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxious youth.

This study examined emotion-related functioning following cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with 37 youth with anxiety disorders (22 boys, 15 girls) ranging in age from 7 to 15 with a principal diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (n = 27), separation anxiety disorder (n = 12), and/or social phobia (n = 13). Treated youth exhibited a reduction in anxiety and increased anxiety self-efficacy and emotional awareness at posttreatment. Treated youth also demonstrated improved coping and less emotional dysregulation with worry but not with anger or sadness. The results suggest that the gains m

Effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy on brain activation in specific phobia.

Little is known about the effects of successful psychotherapy on brain function in subjects with anxiety disorders. The present study aimed to identify changes in brain activation following cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in subjects suffering from specific phobia. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), brain activation to spider videos was measured in 28 spider phobic and 14 healthy control subjects. Phobics were randomly assigned to a therapy-group (TG) and a waiting-list control group (WG). Both groups of phobics were scanned twice. Between scanning sessions, CBT was given t

Effectiveness of Neurofeedback Therapy Adjunct to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Agoraphobia: A Case Study.

Agoraphobia has been defined as marked fear or anxiety being in enclosed or open places, using public transportation, and being in a crowd or outside of home alone. Such individuals make active attempts to avoid those places which cause intense distress. The neuronal areas that play a significant role in agoraphobia are uncinate fasciculus, which connects the prefrontal lobe and amygdala and various alterations in anterior cingulate cortex, insula, amygdala, and lateral prefrontal cortex. Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback which teaches self-control of brain functions by measuring brain wa

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia vs. standard cognitive behavioral therapy for sleep and circadian disturbances in treatment-resistant schizophrenia: study protocol for the randomized controlled trial (COSTS).

BACKGROUND: A subset of patients with schizophrenia do not respond sufficiently to conventional antipsychotic treatment and often have a more complex clinical course, including high rates of sleep disturbances, which can contribute to further worsening of symptoms. However, sleep disturbances are often overlooked in clinical psychiatric settings, and non-pharmacological treatment options are not initiated. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has been shown to effectively ameliorate sleep disturbances in schizophrenia but is yet to be assessed in treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

CONTEXT: Cancer-related fatigue is prevalent and disabling. When persistent and unexplained, it is termed post-cancer fatigue (PCF). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and graded exercise therapy (GET) may improve symptoms and functional outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the outcomes of a randomized controlled trial, which assigned patients with post-cancer fatigue to education, or 12 weeks of integrated cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and graded exercise therapy (GET). METHODS: Three months after treatment for breast or colon cancer, eligible patients had clinically significant fatigue,

Cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders versus normalization of eating behavior.

We examine the science and evidence supporting cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders. Recent trials focusing on the abnormal cognitive and emotional aspects of bulimia have reported a remission rate of about 45%, and a relapse rate of about 30% within one year. However, an early CBT trial that emphasized the normalization of eating behavior had a better outcome than treatment that focused on cognitive intervention. In support of this finding, another treatment, that restores a normal eating behavior using mealtime feedback, has an esti

Personalizing digital mental health: a micro-randomized trial analysis of cognitive behavioral therapy/dialectical behavioral therapy text messages to improve mood.

PURPOSE: Digital mental health interventions could improve population health. However, our understanding of how to improve their effectiveness through personalization is limited. We describe the outcomes of a micro-randomized trial (MRT) of a 60-day text messaging program, delivered during the final stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyze the effects of 6 different types of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) messages, and examine whether socio-demographic, health-related, and contextual factors (eg, timing of sending a message) moderate effectivenes

Real World Outcomes of a Condensed Classroom-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Cancer-Related Cognitive Impairment.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) affects a large proportion of cancer survivors and adversely affects quality of life (QoL). While there is no established CRCI treatment, a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Memory and Attention Adaptation Training (MAAT), has evidence of efficacy in improving self-reported and objective neurocognitive outcomes. However, not all people with CRCI require a full course of MAAT (8 visits). AIMS: We condensed MAAT into an educational class (4 1-h meetings) as a "stepped care" approach to address CRCI in a busy clinical oncology care setting

How Effective Are School Professionals at Identifying Students Who Might Benefit From Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? Baseline Data From the Adaptive School-Based Implementation of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Trial.

School professionals (SPs) are increasingly tasked with providing mental health treatment for students. Successful implementation of school-based mental health evidence-based practices (EBPs) can reduce students' depression and anxiety, but requires identification of appropriate students to benefit from these interventions. We examined the ability of SPs to identify students appropriate for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), using baseline data collected from a large-scale implementation trial. One hundred sixty-nine SPs from 94 Michigan high schools were asked to identify up to 10 students w
