Novel Smartphone Interventions Improve Cognitive Flexibility and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms in Individuals with Contamination Fears.

One type of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by contamination fears and compulsive cleansing. Few effective treatments are available for this debilitating condition. Compulsive symptoms, such as excessive washing, are believed to be mediated by cognitive inflexibility-arguably the most striking cognitive impairment in OCD. In this study, we investigated the effects of two novel smartphone interventions on cognitive flexibility and OCD symptoms in healthy individuals with OCD-like contamination fears. In the first intervention, participants watched a brief video recording of

Cognitive flexibility deficits in male mice exposed to neonatal hyperoxia followed by concentrated ambient ultrafine particles.

Epidemiological evidence indicates an association between early-life exposure to air pollution and preterm birth. Thus, it is essential to address the subsequent vulnerability of preterm infants, who are exposed to unique factors at birth including hyperoxia, and subsequently to air pollution. Health effects of air pollution relate to particle size and the ultrafine particulate component (<100 nm) is considered the most reactive. We previously reported neonatal mice exposed to hyperoxia (60% oxygen), mimicking preterm oxygen supplementation, for the first 4 days of life, followed by exposure t

Interactions between chronic ethanol consumption and thiamine deficiency on neural plasticity, spatial memory, and cognitive flexibility.

BACKGROUND: Many alcoholics display moderate to severe cognitive dysfunction accompanied by brain pathology. A factor confounded with prolonged heavy alcohol consumption is poor nutrition, and many alcoholics are thiamine deficient. Thus, thiamine deficiency (TD) has emerged as a key factor underlying alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD). TD in humans can lead to Wernicke Encephalitis that can progress into Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and these disorders have a high prevalence among alcoholics. Animal models are critical for determining the exact contributions of ethanol (EtOH)- and TD-induced

Hippocampal representations of alternative possibilities are flexibly generated to meet cognitive demands.

The cognitive ability to go beyond the present to consider alternative possibilities, including potential futures and counterfactual pasts, can support adaptive decision-making. Complex and changing real-world environments, however, have many possible alternatives. Whether and how the brain can select among them to represent alternatives that meet current cognitive needs remains unknown. We therefore examined neural representations of alternative spatial locations in the rat hippocampus during navigation in a complex patch-foraging environment with changing reward probabilities. We found repre

Thinking flexibly: A cognitive remediation therapy-informed intervention for autistic youth.

Autistic people are known to demonstrate greater difficulties with cognitive flexibility. These difficulties are associated with a range of poor outcomes, including elevated rates of anxiety and depression. Current intervention approaches fail to account for these specific mechanisms. In this study, we address this by piloting a new intervention which aims to specifically target cognitive inflexibility. The 'Thinking Flexibly' intervention has been co-designed with autistic youth based on previous work, including cognitive remediation therapy. Twenty autistic adolescents were recruited from cl

The null effect of stress on cognitive flexibility in individuals with and without alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a prominent motivator for drinking. Both stress and addiction are associated with impairments in cognitive flexibility. Preclinical work has explored the effect of stress on cognitive flexibility, but this has not been translated to clinical samples. Therefore, the present study tested whether acute stress decreased cognitive flexibility in individuals with and without AUD. It also explored if individuals with and without AUD recruit similar neurocircuitry during an acute stress provocation. METHODS: Sixty-five participants (AUD: N = 34; Control: N = 31) completed the Wi

tDCS-induced enhancement of cognitive flexibility in autism: role of frontal lobe and associated neural circuits.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors (RRBs). These symptoms may stem from cognitive flexibility deficits, with dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and related neural circuits proposed as underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) could enhance PFC activity and functional connectivity, thereby improving cognitive flexibility in a valproic acid (VPA)-induced ASD rat model. METHODS: Pregnant Sprague-Daw

Neural correlates and effect of jealousy on cognitive flexibility in the female titi monkey (Plecturocebus cupreus).

Jealousy is a social emotion that manifests as behavioral reactions from an individual toward a threat to a valuable relationship. Monogamous species exhibit jealousy-type behaviors as an adaptive response to preserve the relationship. Jealousy is also a complex, negatively-valenced emotion which may include fear of loss, anxiety, suspiciousness, and anger. Negative emotion may impair cognitive processes such as cognitive flexibility, an ability important for coping with new situations. However, little is known about how complex social emotions influence cognitive flexibility. To understand th

Cognitive flexibility impairment in temporal lobe epilepsy: The impact of epileptic foci lateralization on executive functions.

INTRODUCTION: Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) has been associated with memory impairments, which are typically linked to hippocampal and mesial temporal cortex lesions. Considering the presence of extensive bidirectional frontotemporal connections, it can be hypothesized that executive dysfunction in TLE is modulated by the lateralization of the epileptic foci. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A comprehensive neuropsychological executive functions protocol was administered to 63 participants, including 42 individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy (20 with right-TLE and 22 with left-TLE) and 21 healthy contro

Differential associations of rumination and cognitive flexibility with guilt and shame following potentially morally injurious events.

BACKGROUND: Guilt and shame are common moral emotions following potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs), which involve events that violate one's deeply held moral values. However, not all individuals will experience guilt and shame following PMIEs and the mechanisms by which PMIEs lead to guilt and shame are not well understood. This study set out to examine the role of event-related intrusive rumination, event-related deliberate rumination, cognitive flexibility, and their interactions, in predicting PMIE-related guilt and shame. METHODS: A subsample of undergraduate participants expose

Decreased frontal white-matter diffusion and improved cognitive flexibility after burr-hole surgery in moyamoya angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: In Moyamoya Angioplasty (MMA), increased apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in frontal white matter (WM) with a normal appearance has been associated with frontal hypoperfusion and executive dysfunction. Multiple burr-hole surgery enables the revascularization of large frontal areas. GOAL: To assess the effect of multiple burr-hole surgery on the ADC and cognitive functions in adults with MMA. METHODS: ADC was measured in 26 brain hemispheres of 14 consecutive adults with MMA (9 women, mean age ± SD: 38.1 ± 10.7 years) prior to and 6 months after burr-hole surgery. ADC was obta

Cognitive flexibility impairments in children with autism spectrum disorders: links to age, gender and child outcomes.

There are still many questions about the cognitive flexibility in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that remain unanswered. The goal of current study was to evaluate cognitive flexibility patterns and their demographic, clinical and behavioral correlates in large sample of children with ASD. A total of 123 children (94 boys and 29 girls) with ASD aged 7-14 years were assessed on the Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST). Findings showed that gender but not age was associated with the cognitive flexibility performance in ASD. Individuals who had more parent-reported language deficits, lower level of

Development and administration of the flexible adapted cognitive test battery for schizophrenia (FACTS).

BACKGROUND: Age and educational eligibility criteria for administration of the most widely used cognitive battery for schizophrenia typically exclude 20 % of individuals with schizophrenia in high-income countries and 25-50 % in middle- and low-income countries. METHODS: We developed the Flexible Adapted Cognitive Test battery for Schizophrenia (FACTS) that can be administered to all individuals with schizophrenia, regardless of age or education. To evaluate the utility and validity of the nine tests in the FACTS, two process measures are assessed during the administration of each test: 'test

Validation of the Flexible and Rigid Cognitive Restraint Scales in a General French Population.

Distinguishing between flexible and rigid cognitive restraint (CR) may be useful for understanding the role of CR in dietary behavior and weight status. This study aimed to translate and adapt the flexible and rigid CR scales to the French context and test their psychometric properties. Construct validity, internal consistency, and test-retest reliability were examined in a sample of 620 individuals. Confirmatory factor analysis of the scales found a two-factor structure (flexible CR: 12 items; rigid CR: 15 items) that provided a good fit and supported the initial solution (χ2 = 584.7, df = 32

Development and Initial Validation of a Scale to Measure Cognitive Demands of Flexible Work.

With globalization, digitalization, and the spread of information and communication technologies, rules regulating work have been softened or completely abolished. Consequently, employees face additional cognitive demands to plan, structure, and coordinate their work. To capture these demands of contemporary work, we constructed and initially validated the Cognitive Demands of Flexible Work (CODE) scale. The scale comprises four subscales (i.e., structuring of work tasks, planning of working times, planning of working places, and coordinating with others). We initially validated the scale in t

The relationship between teachers' cognitive flexibility and perceptions of curriculum change: the mediating role of innovative behavior.

BACKGROUND: Curriculum reforms require teachers not only to understand new curricular expectations but also to adapt them to classroom practice. In this process, teachers' cognitive resources and professional behaviors may be associated with how they interpret and respond to curriculum change. Although cognitive flexibility, innovative behavior, and perceptions of curriculum change have been examined separately in previous research, limited attention has been paid to how these constructs are jointly related within a single explanatory model. AIM: This study aims to examine the mediating role

Depletion of Neurocan in the Prefrontal Cortex Impairs Temporal Order Recognition, Cognitive Flexibility and Perisomatic GABAergic Innervation.

The condensed form of the neural extracellular matrix (ECM), known as perineuronal nets (PNNs), is predominantly associated with parvalbumin-expressing (PV+) interneurons in the cortex and hippocampus. PNNs are enriched in lecticans, including neurocan (Ncan). Genetic variation in the human Ncan gene has been linked to alterations in hippocampus-dependent memory, structural differences in the prefrontal cortex (PFC), and increased risk for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, the specific contribution of Ncan to PFC-dependent cognitive functions and synaptic organization remains incomp
