The vestibular system: balancing more than just the body.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The review presents a selection of recent studies in the field of vestibular neuroscience, including how vestibular stimulation modulates space and body perception. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent neuroimaging studies identified the operculo-insular/retroinsular cortex as the core vestibular cortex and showed how it is reorganized after vestibular dysfunctions. Subliminal galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) induces long-term reduction of hemispatial neglect and improves vertical perception in stroke patients, but the underlying mechanisms remain to be identified. Healthy voluntee

Frontiers of model animals for neuroscience: two prosperous aging model animals for promoting neuroscience research.

A model animal showing spontaneous onset is a useful tool for investigating the mechanism of disease. Here, I would like to introduce two aging model animals expected to be useful for neuroscience research: the senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM) and the klotho mouse. The SAM was developed as a mouse showing a senescence-related phenotype such as a short lifespan or rapid advancement of senescence. In particular, SAMP8 and SAMP10 show age-related impairment of learning and memory. SAMP8 has spontaneous spongy degeneration in the brain stem and spinal cord with aging, and immunohistochemical stu

Steady-state visually evoked potentials: focus on essential paradigms and future perspectives.

After 40 years of investigation, steady-state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs) have been shown to be useful for many paradigms in cognitive (visual attention, binocular rivalry, working memory, and brain rhythms) and clinical neuroscience (aging, neurodegenerative disorders, schizophrenia, ophthalmic pathologies, migraine, autism, depression, anxiety, stress, and epilepsy). Recently, in engineering, SSVEPs found a novel application for SSVEP-driven brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. Although some SSVEP properties are well documented, many questions are still hotly debated. We provide a

The effect of integrating pain neuroscience education with stabilization exercises using a flexi-bar on functional disability, pain, and geometry of abdominal and multifidus muscles in patients with chronic non-specific low back pain.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic non-specific low back pain is a multifactorial condition encompassing both physical and psychosocial components, frequently characterized by maladaptive pain-related cognitions and fear-avoidance behaviours. Pain neuroscience education seeks to reconceptualize these cognitions and mitigate pain-related fear. This study evaluated the additional benefits of integrating pain neuroscience education with Flexi-Bar-based stabilization exercises on pain intensity, functional disability, and geometry of the abdominal and lumbar Multifidus muscles in individuals with chronic non-spec

This year, the actuality for addictions in this edition addresses four points. The disease model of addiction is criticized by the cognitive neurosciences which need to consider the agentivity of the persons. Regarding the societal actuality, clinical pharmacology review of cannabidiol presents an update on legal cannabis. The suicidality of excessive gamblers may be prevented specifically. Addiction and first psychotic episodes need an integrated care.

How Can Animal Models Inform the Understanding of Cognitive Inflexibility in Patients with Anorexia Nervosa?

Deficits in cognitive flexibility are consistently seen in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). This type of cognitive impairment is thought to be associated with the persistence of AN because it leads to deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behaviour that are highly resistant to change. Neurobiological drivers of cognitive inflexibility have some commonalities with the abnormal brain functional outcomes described in patients with AN, including disrupted prefrontal cortical function, and dysregulated dopamine and serotonin neurotransmitter systems. The activity-based anorexia (ABA) model r

Neurology of developmental dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia was until recently considered to belong solely in the domain of educational psychology. With the advent of better theories on language and reading, and better methods for assessing the structure and function of living human brains and for determining genetic transmission, dyslexia is now poised to become a focal concern of cognitive neuroscience, neurology, and genetic research. Still unresolved are questions relating to how much a reading disability represents a normal variation or a separate pathological entity, and whether the cognitive disorder is primarily cognitive

Transcranial magnetic stimulation from healthy brain aging to Alzheimer's disease: a review on mechanisms, therapeutic potential, and future clinical directions.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive and non-pharmacological intervention, is increasingly being explored for mitigating age-related cognitive decline and dementia. Its therapeutic potential is largely attributed to its capacity to modulate neuronal firing rates and induce neuroplastic changes and modulate neurovascular coupling within distributed neural networks that support memory, attention, and executive function. Despite growing interest, gaps remain in understanding how specific stimulation parameters engage in neural circuits and translate into meaningful cognitive ou

Arnold Pick's concept of dementia.

Arnold Pick (1851-1924) provided the first description of the neurodegenerative disease associated with his name; but his importance to the field of neuroscience goes far beyond this eponymous gift. His view that the process of dementia should be seen as a mosaic of circumscribed neuropsychological deficits and not as a diffuse degradation of mental abilities is essential for progress in a cognitive neuropsychological approach to the study of dementias.

Role of individual neurons and neural networks in cognitive functioning of the brain: a new insight.

The prevailing concept in modern neuroscience is that neuron networks play a dominant role in the functioning of the nervous system, whereas the role of individual neurons is rather insignificant. This concept suggests that "individuality" of single neurons is primarily determined by their place in a network rather than their intrinsic properties. Here I argue that individual neurons may play an important, if not decisive, role in performing cognitive functions of the brain. This tentative viewpoint is supported by experimental and clinical insights into disorders of cognitive functions and by

From hysteria and shell shock to posttraumatic stress disorder: comments on psychoanalytic and neuropsychological approaches.

In this paper, we look back at some of the earliest psychoanalytic approaches to trauma. The theoretical feasibility of reconciling psychoanalytic and neurobiological accounts of the effects of severe stress is examined. First, several epistemic considerations about the concepts of falsifiability and complexity in science are discussed with regard to neuroscience and psychoanalysis. We report the decisive discussions and descriptions of shell shock and hysteria that laid the foundation for the modern notions of dissociation and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We particularly underline th

How we see others: the psychobiology of schemas and transference.

Social cognition involves automatic and stimulus-driven processes; these may be important in mediating stereotypes in the community and schemas and transference in the clinic setting. Significant differences in self-related processing and other-related processing may also lead to important biases in our view of the other. The psychobiology of social cognition is gradually being delineated, and may be useful in understanding these phenomena, and in responding appropriately. In the clinic, schemas can be rigorously assessed, and schema-focused psychotherapy may be useful in a number of indicatio

Nonhuman gamblers: lessons from rodents, primates, and robots.

The search for neuronal and psychological underpinnings of pathological gambling in humans would benefit from investigating related phenomena also outside of our species. In this paper, we present a survey of studies in three widely different populations of agents, namely rodents, non-human primates, and robots. Each of these populations offers valuable and complementary insights on the topic, as the literature demonstrates. In addition, we highlight the deep and complex connections between relevant results across these different areas of research (i.e., cognitive and computational neuroscienc

Pigs as large-animal models for translational behavioral neuroscience.

Model choice in behavioral neuroscience is often driven by convenience and established research pipelines, contributing to a persistent reliance on murine species. Although rodents are essential for discovery, their limited alignment with human brain architecture and clinical technologies can constrain translational inference. Here, we argue that the pig (Sus scrofa) is an underutilized large-animal model with substantial translational value due to its gyrencephalic brain, human-relevant physiology, and compatibility with clinical imaging and neurotechnology. We review evidence that pigs can s

Hormonal and genetic influences on processing reward and social information.

Social neuroscience is an emerging interdisciplinary field that combines tools from cognitive, cellular, and molecular neuroscience to understand the neural mechanisms underlying human interactions, emphasizing the complementary nature of different organization levels in the social and biological domains. Previous studies focused on the molecular/neuronal substrates of a variety of complex behaviors, such as parental behavior and pair bonding. Less is known about the various factors influencing interindividual differences in reward processing and decision making in social contexts, both relyin

[Contribution of neuroimaging in the prediction of outcome in neuropsychiatric disorders and learning disabilities].

Recent advances in cognitive neuroscience methods reveal the potential of neuroimaging as be a useful tool in clinical and educational practice. In this review, we review the literature and provide evidence that functional and structural neuroimaging can detect changes with treatment. Further, we show promising initial results showing that the addition of neuroimaging measures can enhance conventional methods to predict outcome and prognosis. Examples are drawn from disorders such as attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OC

The effect of peri-operative pain neuroscience education on pain and recovery in adult patients receiving laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair.

To optimize the efficacy of analgesia for patients receiving laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair, peri-operative pain neuroscience education (PNE) as a pain-specific cognitive therapy was incorporated into multi-modal analgesia. A randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare conventional analgesia (group CA) and the addition of pain neuroscience education into it (group PNE) in patients receiving laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Characteristics of peri-operative pain was evaluated with Douleur Neuropathique 4 questionnaire (DN-4), central sensitization inventory (CSI), pain catastr
