Application of Catalysts Prepared by Solution Combustion Synthesis in Dry Reforming of Methane.

Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a method whereby two greenhouse gases (methane and carbon dioxide) are synthesized into a high-value gas. Suitable catalysts with optimal compositions are still in development, as problems concerning coking and metal sintering remain unresolved. Since the late 20th century, catalysts prepared via solution combustion synthesis (SCS) have been applied for catalytic reactions, as these materials (catalyst or supports) demonstrate high catalytic performance; for example, SCS catalysts have been tested in DRM. This review describes the history of solution combustio

Kinetic Model for the Direct Conversion of CO2/CO into Light Olefins over an In2O3-ZrO2/SAPO-34 Tandem Catalyst.

An original kinetic model is proposed for the direct production of light olefins by hydrogenation of CO2/CO (COx) mixtures over an In2O3-ZrO2/SAPO-34 tandem catalyst, quantifying deactivation by coke. The reaction network comprises 12 individual reactions, and deactivation is quantified with expressions dependent on the concentration of methanol (as coke precursor) and H2O and H2 (as agents attenuating coke formation). The experimental results were obtained in a fixed-bed reactor under the following conditions: In2O3-ZrO2/SAPO-34 mass ratio, 0/1-1/0; 350-425 °C; 20-50 bar; H2/COx ratio, 1-3; C

Pyrolysis of municipal waste catalyzed with synthesized zeolite from steel making factory waste.

Bio-oil is lacking of many quality standards required for the engine fuel. Many types of catalysts have been used to upgrade the bio-oil. However, they deactivated quickly or had high price. In this study, the catalytic pyrolysis of wastewater treatment plant sludge, pine wood, municipal waste and their mixture over synthesized zeolite (A type) from steel factory waste was studied. The results indicated that zeolite led to the slight increase of the bio-oil yield (46.0 to 46.2 wt%) and improved the quality of the bio-oil. For instance, it reduced the content of oxygen (49.45 to 19.65 wt%) and

Steam Reforming of Model Bio-Oil Aqueous Fraction Using Ni-(Cu, Co, Cr)/SBA-15 Catalysts.

Hydrogen obtained from biomass derivatives is considered a promising alternative to fossil fuels. The aim of this work is to test the viability of Ni-M/SBA-15 (M: Co, Cu, Cr) catalysts for the hydrogen production from bio-oil aqueous fraction reforming. Tests were performed in a fixed-bed reactor at 600 °C and atmospheric pressure. Firstly, the steam reforming (SR) of acetic acid, hydroxyacetone, furfural and phenol, as representative constituents of the bio-oil aqueous fraction, was carried out. Lower reactivity with increasing carbon number and decreasing steam-to-carbon ratio was observed.

Stable Ga-MFI zeolite for propane dehydroaromatization constructed by healing Silanol-defect in framework.

Propane dehydroaromatization (PDA) provides a promising route to produce valuable chemicals such as benzene, toluene and xylene via non-petroleum feedstocks, in which Ga-modified MFI zeolites demonstrate high activity but are susceptible to severe coke deposition. The defect-derived silanols (Si-OH) in zeolite formed during synthesis has emerged as a predominant factor, making the prolongation of the catalyst longevity a major challenge. Here, we developed a gallosilicate MFI zeolite with silanol-defect remediated (Ga-MFI-AHFS) through an ammonium hexafluorosilicate post-treatment, which exhib

Waste-derived catalysts for tar cracking in hot syngas cleaning.

Catalytic tar cracking is a promising technique for hot syngas cleaning unit in gasification plants because it can preserve tars chemical energy, so increasing the syngas heating value. The cost associated with catalyst preparation is a key issue, together with its deactivation induced by coke deposition. Iron is a cheap and frequently used catalyst, which can also be found in some industrial wastes. The study aims to assess the catalytic efficiency for tar cracking of two waste-derived materials (red mud and sewage sludge) having high content of iron. The catalysts were supported on spheres o

Self-circulation of oily spent hydrodesulphurization (HDS) catalyst by catalytic pyrolysis for high quality oil recovery.

In this study, roasted spent HDS ash (sHDSc-A) was used for the first time to catalytically pyrolyze oily spent HDS catalysts (sHDSc) to improve the yield and quality of pyrolysis oil. The results showed that sHDSc-A promoted the decomposition of coke in oily sHDSc, resulting in the recovery of more oil and gas. Meanwhile, sHDSc-A significantly improved the quality of the pyrolysis oil. They inhibited the aromatization of alkanes to increase the saturation of the pyrolysis oil from 59.39% to 74.25% and the H/C radio from 1.62 to 1.72; promoted the decomposition of long-chain alkanes to increas

MoO3 Nanobelt-Modified HMCM-49 Zeolite with Enhanced Dispersion of Mo Species and Catalytic Performance for Methane Dehydro-Aromatization.

The methane dehydro-aromatization reaction (MDA) is a promising methane valorization process due to the conversion of methane to value-added aromatics (benzene, toluene and naphthalene). However, one of the major disadvantages of utilizing zeolite in MDA is that the catalyst is rapidly inactivated due to coke formation, which eventually causes the activity and aromatic selectivity to decrease. Consequently, the process is not conducive to large-scale industrial applications. The reasonable control of Mo site distribution on the zeolite surface is the key factor for partially inhibiting the cok

[NOx and SO2 formation in the sintering process and influence of sintering material composition on NOx emissions].

NOx and SO2 formation in the sintering process and the influence of coke powder content, moisture content and adding additives on NO emissions were investigated by the sintering pot experimental method. The results showed that the combustion zone moved downward along the sintering pot after the sintering started. The NOx concentrations of all monitoring points below the combustion zone were basically the same. SO2 generated in the combustion zone was adsorbed and accumulated in the sintering materials below the zone. Then, SO2 was released by pyrolysis, and finally discharged from the outlet o

Formation and Fate of Formaldehyde in Methanol-to-Hydrocarbon Reaction: In Situ Synchrotron Radiation Photoionization Mass Spectrometry Study.

HCHO has been confirmed as an active intermediate in the methanol-to-hydrocarbon (MTH) reaction, and is critical for interpreting the mechanisms of coke formation. Here, HCHO was detected and quantified during the MTH process over HSAPO-34 and HZSM-5 by in situ synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry. Compared with conventional methods, excellent time-resolved profiles were obtained to study the formation and fate of HCHO, and other products during the induction, steady-state reaction, and deactivation periods. Similar formation trends of HCHO and methane, and their close corre

Cyanide removal from industrial wastewater by cross-flow nanofiltration: transport modeling and economic evaluation.

A modeling and simulation study, along with an economic analysis, was carried out for the separation of cyanide from industrial wastewater using a flat sheet cross-flow nanofiltration membrane module. With the addition of a pre-microfiltration step, nanofiltration was carried out using real coke wastewater under different operating conditions. Under the optimum operating pressure of 13 bars and a pH of 10.0, a rate of more than 95% separation of cyanide was achieved. That model predictions agreed very well with the experimental findings, as is evident in the Willmott d-index value (> 0.95) and

Respiratory exposures associated with silicon carbide production: estimation of cumulative exposures for an epidemiological study.

Silicon carbide is produced by heating a mixture of petroleum coke and silica sand to approximately 2000 degrees C in an electric furnace for 36 hours. During heating, large amounts of carbon monoxide are released, sulphur dioxide is produced from residual sulphur in the coke, and hydrocarbon fume is produced by pyrolysis of the coke. Loading and unloading furnaces causes exposures to respirable dust containing crystalline silica, silicon carbide, and hydrocarbons. In the autumn of 1980 extensive measurements were made of personal exposures to air contaminants. Eight hour time weighted exposur

Elucidating the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the transformation of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) during the regeneration of spent fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts.

The emission of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) from the industrial fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalyst regenerator is a concerning pollutant that is highly toxic. Yet, the underpinning rationale particularly the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) and its competition with O2, remains poorly understood. Through the tests of three industrial spent FCC catalysts via temperature-programmed oxidation and Chemkin simulation, this study revealed a dual role of CO2 in the transformation of HCN. At high temperatures (e.g. >700oC), the presence of CO2 is in favor of promoting the thermal cracking of coke via the B

Unravelling potential reaction intermediates during catalytic pyrolysis of polypropylene with microscopy and spectroscopy.

While plastics-to-plastics recycling via melting and re-extrusion is often the preferred option due to a relatively low CO2 footprint, this technique requires a highly sorted waste stream and plastic properties can often not be maintained. Obtaining aromatics, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX), via catalytic pyrolysis of polyolefins, such as polypropylene and polyethylene, offers another attractive recycling technology. In this process, a discarded crude oil refinery catalyst (ECAT) was previously shown to lower the unwanted formation of deactivating coke species compared to a fresh c

Effective production of biosyngas from biomethane over spatially confined Ni catalyst with captured CO2.

For the utilisation of biomethane and captured CO2, this work introduces a Ni/Al2O3 egg-shell pellet catalyst synthesised via a developed wetness impregnation method that confines species to the pellet surface for efficient dry reforming of methane (DRM). High catalytic activity is achieved with only 0.5 wt% Ni. Calcination at 1200 °C reduces surface acidity, enhancing resistance to coking. The catalyst, C8-0.5Ni-T0.1-C12 (0.5 wt% Ni, 0.10 mm shell, calcined at 1200 °C), demonstrates the highest conversions (> 98 %) and strong resistance to coking (< 0.26 wt%). Electron microscopy reveals that
