Pharmacogenomics in Diabetes: Population-Specific Insights from Colombia.

Background: Pharmacogenomics offers critical insights into interindividual variability in drug response, especially in complex diseases such as diabetes mellitus. However, most pharmacogenomic evidence is derived from populations of European ancestry, limiting its applicability in admixed and underrepresented populations. In Colombia, the lack of population-specific data hampers the implementation of precision medicine strategies in diabetes care. The aim of this study was to identify pharmacogenomic variants significantly associated with diabetes and exhibiting differential allele frequencies

Borrelia puertoricensis in opossums (Didelphis marsupialis) from Colombia.

BACKGROUND: The genus Borrelia comprises pathogenic species of bacteria that pose a significant risk to public health. Borrelia spp. are emerging or reemerging infectious agents worldwide with complex transmission cycles, and many species use rodents as vertebrate reservoir hosts. Spirochetes morphologically compatible with Borrelia have been recurrently observed in opossums; however, there is currently a lack of genetic evidence confirming infection or supporting that these marsupials are hosts of Borrelia spirochetes. METHODS: During 2017, 53 serum samples of Didelphis marsupialis from the

[Orthotopic uterus transplantation. Sheep model experiment, Cali (Colombia)].

OBJECTIVE: It has been recommended that professionals who are planning to perform uterine transplantation should first carry out animal experiments. This paper describes the procedure for uterine transplant in sheep, as well as short and medium-term results. Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in Colombia: Leishmania braziliensis subspecies diversity.

It is generally held that with rare exception Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis is the parasite responsible for the metastatic development of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis in the New World. Yet the infrequency of mucocutaneous disease compared with cutaneous manifestations, and the difficulty of isolating parasites from mucocutaneous lesions have restricted the study of the organisms involved. We here report the biologic, isoenzymatic, and monoclonal antibody specificity characteristic of eight Leishmania isolates obtained from the mucosal lesions of the same number of patients. Individually

OBJECTIVE: To describe the behavior of pregnancy and congenital syphilis in Colombia between 2012 and 2018 according to national notifications records. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ecological exploratory study was conducted based on notifications to the public health surveillance system. The incidence rate and prevalence ratio were estimated for each department. Each estimate was established per ranges for 33 departments evaluated and expressed in grayscale maps based on rates and ratios evaluated. Epidemic curves by week of notification for pregnancy and congenital syphilis are also shown. RES

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in Colombia a case series.

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) is a rare clinical and radiological condition. There is limited information regarding the characteristics of PRES in the Colombian population. This study aims to describe the clinical-radiological characteristics of PRES in a series of cases in Colombia. A retrospective study was conducted between 2018 and 2024 with adult patients with PRES in two high complexity centers in Bogota, Colombia. Demographic, clinical, radiological, electroencephalographic, neurological complications and clinical outcomes were registered. Comparison of outcomes wa

Congenital malaria: Frequency and epidemiology in Colombia, 2009-2020.

Congenital Malaria (CM) is an underestimated and under-researched problem in Colombia, despite its severe clinical, epidemiological, economic, and public health consequences. The objective was to determine the general frequency of CM, the specific frequency of CM by diagnostic test and plasmodial species, and identify its associated factors. A retrospective study was carried out using the records of 567 newborns. qPCR and Thick Blood Smear (TBS) were performed. The frequency of infection was determined with a 95% confidence interval. Associated factors were identified by non-parametric tests a

Children were screened with the Battelle Developmental Inventory to establish their developmental age. Eighty children with an equivalent mental age of 2-5.11 years were allocated to groups of 20 according to their mental age. Parents and teachers then completed the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Version. We found a high variability and a low correlation between parent and teacher ratings. In general, children showed a specific pro

Flea-borne Rickettsia species in fleas, Caldas department, Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Rickettsioses are zoonotic diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria of the genus Rickettsia and transmitted to man by means of arthropod vectors such as ticks, fleas, mites and lice. Historically, Caldas Department has reported a significant number of cases of murine typhus to the Colombian national health surveillance system, and consequent studies of flea-borne rickettsiosis identified the circulation of Rickettsia typhi and Rickettsia felis in multiple municipalities. Our aim was to genotype species of Rickettsia detected in fleas collected from domestic and wild mammals in Cald

Case report: microcephaly associated with Zika virus infection, Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Recently there has been a large outbreak of Zika virus infections in Colombia, South America. The epidemic began in September 2015 and continued to April 2017, for the total number of Zika cases reported of 107,870. For those confirmed Zika cases, there were nearly 20,000 (18.5%) suspected to be pregnant women, resulting in 157 confirmed cases of microcephaly in newborns reported by their health government agency. There is a clear under-estimation of the total number of cases and in addition no prior publications have been published to demonstrate the clinical aspects of the Zika i

Disseminated Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Colombia: Report of 27 Cases.

Disseminated leishmaniasis (DL) is a poorly described disease that is frequently misdiagnosed as other clinical manifestations of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) such as diffuse CL or post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. Twenty-seven cases of DL diagnosed between 1997 and 2015 are described. A higher prevalence was observed in men (mean age 32 years). The number of lesions per patient ranged from 12 to 294, distributed mainly in the upper extremities, face and trunk. The lesions were mostly plaques or nodules. Seven patients had nasal mucous damage, 74% of the patients were of mixed race, 92% liv

[Trypanosoma cruzi strains resistant to benznidazole occurring in Colombia].

Introduction. Chagas disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi is one of the most serious public health problems in the Americas. Benznidazole is one of two drugs used to treat Chagas' disease. However, the variation in susceptibility of the parasite to this drug is one of the main causes of treatment failure. Objective. The in vitro susceptibility to benznidazole was assessed in Colombian strains of T. cruzi from several sources and geographical regions. Materials and methods. Thirty-three Colombian T. cruzi strains were isolated from humans, vectors and mammals. These were analyzed in vitro by the
