Exercise and exposure to heat following bovine colostrum supplementation: a review of gastrointestinal and immune function.

Colostrum is the first milk produced by mammalian mothers and is essential for the health and survival of the newborn. Bovine colostrum (BC) has greater concentrations of the bioactive components (i.e. immune and growth factors) than those found in human colostrum. As a result, BC supplementation has been recently adopted by many sport competitors as a means of enhancing immune function as well as improving performance. Improvements in physical performance associated with BC supplementation may stem from the ability of BC to maintain gastrointestinal (GI) integrity by decreasing GI permeabilit

Alpha-tocopherol concentration in the colostrum of nursing women supplemented with retinyl palmitate and alpha-tocopherol.

BACKGROUND: Vitamins A and E are recognisably important in the initial stages of life, and the newborn depends on nutritional adequacy of breast milk to meet their needs. These vitamins share routes of transport to the tissues and antagonistic effects have been observed in animals after supplementation with vitamin A. The present study aimed to determine the effect of maternal supplementation with a megadose of retinyl palmitate in the immediate post-partum on α-tocopherol concentration in the colostrum. METHODS: Healthy parturient women at a Brazilian public maternity were recruited for the

Hormones, IgG and lactose changes around parturition in plasma, and colostrum or saliva of multiparous sows.

Blood, colostrum and saliva samples were serially taken from 6 multiparous sows from day 109 of gestation until day 3 postpartum. Plasma was assayed for oestradiol-17beta (E2), progesterone (P4), prolactin (PRL), cortisol, immunoglobulin G (IgG) and lactose. Colostrum was assayed for E2, P4, IgG and lactose. Lactoserum, obtained after ultra centrifugation of colostrum, was assayed for PRL. Saliva was assayed for cortisol. Time-related variations in hormone, IgG and lactose concentrations measured in plasma were parallel to those measured in colostrum, lactoserum or saliva. However, the concent

Quantifying maternal antibody transfer to colostrum and cord blood reveals virus-specific selectivity in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal infections are a leading cause of mortality in dogs, with up to 30% of puppies dying within the first 3 weeks of life. During this critical period of immune development, protection is highly dependent on maternal antibodies (MatAbs) transferred across the placenta and via colostrum. Despite the critical importance of this transfer, limited information is available regarding the biological or clinical factors that determine its magnitude, whether specific antibodies are preferentially transferred, or how these processes vary across a broad population of dogs. METHODS: To q

Evaluation of colostrum-coated ZnO nanoparticles (C-ZnONPs) in attenuating valproic acid-induced prenatal toxicity.

Valproic acid (VPA) is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing drug, but its use during pregnancy is associated with oxidative stress-mediated teratogenicity and neurodevelopmental impairments. Given that discontinuation of VPA therapy is often not feasible in women with refractory epilepsy or severe mood disorders, development of effective adjunctive protective strategies is critical. Our previous work on "Eco-Friendly ZnO Nanoparticle Synthesis and Colostrum Coating" demonstrated that C-ZnONPs exhibit superior antioxidant stability and biocompatibility. Building on this, the pres

First molecular detection of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis, and hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. in bovine colostrum.

Bovine colostrum (BC) is widely recognized for its fundamental role in the nutrition and protection of newborn calves. However, it may also contain pathogens, and research is still limited to a few agents. This study aimed to assess the presence of Anaplasma marginale (msp4), Babesia bovis (cytb), B. bigemina (cytb), and hemotropic Mycoplasma spp. (hemoplasmas) (16S rRNA or gapN) in BC and blood by molecular investigation. Aseptically collected blood (5 mL) and colostrum (40 mL) were obtained once from 104 Holstein cows from a commercial dairy herd in southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, within the

Bovine neonatal microbiome origins: a review of proposed microbial community presence from conception to colostrum.

In recent years, there has been an influx of research evaluating the roles of the reproductive tract microbiota in modulating reproductive performance. These efforts have resulted in a breadth of research exploring the bovine reproductive tract microbiota. The female reproductive tract microbiota has been characterized during the estrus cycle, at timed artificial insemination, during gestation, and postpartum. Additionally, there are recently published studies investigating in-utero inoculation of the bovine fetus. However, critical review of the literature to understand how the microbial shif

Early blood biochemical changes following colostrum intake in newborn Murrah buffalo calves: an observational study.

Colostrum is rich in macronutrients and bioactive components that support physiological adaptation during the neonatal period in ruminants. However, information on the early hematological, biochemical, and immunological changes to colostrum intake in buffalo calves remains limited. The present study evaluated changes in these parameters before and after colostrum intake in newborn Murrah buffalo calves (n = 20). Blood samples were collected before colostrum intake (within 30 min after birth) and after colostrum intake (12-15 h after birth). All buffalo calves had post-colostrum serum total pro

Short-interval longitudinal analysis of immune cell dynamics in heavy draft foals after colostrum intake.

Maternal cells and antibodies are present in equine colostrum, but their relationship with immune cells in foals after colostrum ingestion remains unclear. This study longitudinally analyzed immune cells in the peripheral blood of neonatal foals at short intervals and investigated their relationship with colostral immune cells. Eleven clinically healthy draft mares and their foals were examined. Foal blood was collected before colostrum intake (0 hr) and at 2-3, 6, 12, 36-48 hr, and 3 and 7 days after ingestion. Mare blood and milk (0, 36-48 hr; 0 hr milk defined as colostrum) were also collec

Metabolomic and peptidomic insights into camel colostrum-derived protein hydrolysates with potential anti-hypercholesterolemic activities.

Camel colostrum is the least studied source of dairy protein that could yield high-quality bioactive peptides with hypocholesterolaemic activity. Therefore, we comparatively investigated anti-hypercholesterolemic activity of hydrolysates generated from camel colostrum (CC) and mature camel milk (MCM) using alcalase (A2-6), flavorzyme (F2-6), and neutrase (N2-6). Results showed Alcalase as the most effective enzyme for hydrolyzing CC and MCM proteins, outperforming flavorzyme and neutrase as evidenced by its higher free amino nitrogen (FAN) content. Overall, camel colostrum hydrolysates (CCHs)

Multiple Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria with Marked Cholesterol-Lowering Effects Were Discovered in Equine Colostrum.

Xinjiang ranks among the key domestication origins of horses. Local nomadic ethnic groups have a long-standing tradition of consuming equine dairy products, which endows mare-derived dairy matrices with abundant, distinctive and scarce probiotic resources. Equine colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins and growth factors; nevertheless, its pharmacological activities and micro-ecological composition remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to isolate and screen native strains with cholesterol-lowering potential from Xinjiang equine colostrum and conduct a preliminary investigation into their

H-ferritin in sows' colostrum- and milk-derived extracellular vesicles: a novel iron delivery concept.

Iron deficiency anemia is a significant problem in piglets, as they are born with insufficient iron stores for supporting their rapid body growth. Further, sows' milk contains inadequate iron levels for meeting the demands of piglet rapid growth in the pre-wean stage. The forms of iron present in the milk are essential to understanding bioavailability and potential routes for supplementing iron to mitigate iron deficiency anemia in piglets. Recently, our studies showed that H-ferritin (FTH1) is involved in iron transport to different tissues and can be used as an oral iron supplement to correc

Mid-infrared spectroscopy for large-scale phenotyping of bovine colostrum gross composition and immunoglobulin concentration.

Immunoglobulin G is the fundamental antibody for acquisition of passive transfer of immunity in ruminant newborns. Colostrum, in fact, must be administered as soon as possible after birth to ensure a successful transfer of IgG from the dam to the calf. Assessment of colostrum Ig concentration and gross composition via gold standards is expensive, time consuming, and hardly implementable for large-scale investigations. Therefore, in the present study we evaluated the predictive ability of mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) as an indirect determination method. A total of 714 colostrum samples coll

Analysis of clinical outcomes of oropharyngeal colostrum administration in very low-birth-weight preterm newborns.

OBJECTIVES: Colostrum is the first secretion produced by the mammary glands and is present through the seventh day after birth. Colostrum has important immunomodulatory components and protective factors that contribute to the protection and development of newborns. The oropharyngeal administration of colostrum (OAC) has been proposed as a potential nutritional option for very low-birth-weight (VLBW) newborns (<1500 g). This study aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes of VLBW infants receiving OAC. METHODS: This is a retrospective longitudinal study with nonprobability sampling of VLBW infant

Bovine respiratory syncytial virus-specific IgG-1 in nasal secretions of colostrum-fed neonatal calves.

In order to determine whether nasal secretions of young calves contain passively derived antibodies to bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and if there are differences in presence and/or subclass of these antibodies between calves fed different colostrum replacement products, 17 Holstein calves were fed 150 g of IgG in either a sprayed-dried colostrum-based (CR; n = 8) or a plasma-based colostrum replacement product (PR; n = 9) within 6 h of birth. Venous blood and nasal secretions obtained before feeding and at 24 h of age were assayed for total IgG (serum) by radial immunodiffusion and

Immunization of cows with novel core glycolipid vaccine induces anti-endotoxin antibodies in bovine colostrum.

BACKGROUND: Translocation of gut-derived Gram-negative bacterial (GNB) lipopolysaccharide (LPS, or endotoxin) is a source of systemic inflammation that exacerbates HIV, cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases and malnutrition. The oral administration of bovine colostrum (BC) reduces endotoxemia in patients with impaired gut barrier function. Consequently, BC enriched in antibodies to LPS may ameliorate endotoxemia-related morbidities. We developed a detoxified J5 LPS/group B meningococcal outer membrane protein (J5dLPS/OMP) vaccine that induces antibodies against a highly conserved core r

Parity and dietary energy regulate IgG and non-IgG bioactive proteins in colostrum of beef cattle.

Bovine colostrum provides crucial immune and developmental support to newborn calves, yet the roles of non-immunoglobulin bioactive proteins remain underexplored. The objective of this study was to characterize the colostrum proteome and evaluate the effects of parity, prepartum dietary metabolizable energy, and colostral immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration on its protein composition. Colostrum samples from primiparous and multiparous Angus × Simmental beef cows fed low-, control-, or high-metabolizable-energy diets during the prepartum period were analyzed by quantitative proteomics.
