Persons with psychiatric disorders (PD) are known to be at an increased risk of committing elder abuse, with much of this abuse occurring toward women. However, there is no evidence available speaking to the extent of this problem. The objective of the present study is to explore rates of abuse committed against older women by a relative with PD. In conjunction with the University of Pennsylvania, 217 women residing across the United States who are at least 55 years of age and who have a relative with PD completed an online survey. Analyses found that in the past 6 months 15% of survey respond

The introduction of the healthcare program has brought about a Copernican revolution by separating care from the place where it is provided. This system, which combines constraints and outpatient care, calls into question healthcare practices, particularly during home visits. Qualitative research conducted among thirteen healthcare professionals in outpatient psychiatry in the Hauts-de-France region explores the necessary adaptations to relational strategies in this context. It highlights the emergence of a key skill, flexible rigidity, in establishing and maintaining the therapeutic alliance.

INTRODUCTION: Involuntary psychiatric hospitalization occurs when someone with a serious mental disorder requires treatment without their consent. Trends vary globally, and currently, there is limited data on involuntary hospitalization in Canada. We examine involuntary hospitalization trends in British Columbia, Canada, and describe the social and clinical characteristics of people ages 15 and older who were involuntarily hospitalized between 2008/2009 and 2017/2018.
METHOD: We used population-based linked administrative data to examine and compare trends in involuntary and voluntary hospita

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly reshaped involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, disrupting the balance between patient rights, public safety, and healthcare delivery. This study aims to examine the pandemic's impact on involuntary admissions (IA) from a major psychiatric hospital in Sibiu Romania. Furthermore, it proposes a prediction model for informed consent refusal rates (ICRR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, observational analysis of 781 involuntary admissions using records by comparing socio-demographic, clinical, and procedural variables acros

The goal of this study is to understand how different admission statuses of varying degrees of restrictiveness (informal, voluntary, emergency admission, and involuntary admission on medical certification) are used in the psychiatric emergency room. The study included 656 consecutively admitted patients from a psychiatric emergency room over 28 months. Data were analyzed univariately and using two discriminant function models. Only six (0.9%) patients were informal admissions. Voluntary admissions (24.9%, n = 163) tended to be for patients with affective disorders, those who were self-referred

Violence to self and to others on a locked, acute-care unit is reported for a three-year period. Drug abuse correlated strongly with both types of violence. Self-violence appeared to be a more predictable event due to its diagnostic specificity, history of prior violence and timing of the episodes. Assaults occurred more randomly demonstrating only a mild association with schizophrenia, but not with other psychotic disorders.

Compulsory admission (CA) refers to the process of hospitalization of an individual to a psychiatric ward or hospital, without their consent, due to severe mental health conditions. While it is an established and legally framed practice in many countries, it raises a number of ethical issues in terms of personal liberty and risks of potential misuse. Ethnicity, male gender and psychosis are the main risk factors for compulsory admission to psychiatric wards/hospitals in general population. Previous studies documented that CA is even more frequently used in prison, yet its determinants are stil

Following the French law n° 98-468 of 17 June 1998 relative to the prevention of sexual offenses and the protection of minors, social and judicial follow-up and court-ordered treatment were introduced with the aim of reinforcing the prevention of recidivism. Court-ordered treatment is one of the possible obligatory measures provided for by social and judicial follow-up. However, there is no consensus between the different professionals concerning the criteria of indication and the final purpose of this measure. Most of the few available studies are retrospective. Only rare studies have assesse

INTRODUCTION: The ability to conceptualise other individuals' mental states is dependent on having a 'theory of mind' (ToM). Individuals with Asperger's syndrome typically display ToM impairments, as do some individuals with schizophrenia, notably those with paranoid delusions. The presenting features of these and other individuals, such as those with some personality disorders, particularly in forensic patients, are often unclear. ToM performance was examined to see whether it could distinguish forensic patients with Asperger's syndrome from other patient groups.

Patricide is the murder of one of the parents. We report a case of a man who had committed two homicides, at different times, one of them being considered a parricide. He was referred for forensic psychiatric evaluation and later evaluated in a psychiatric assistance service. Psychiatric interview was carried out and the final psychiatric diagnosis was established based on the DSM-IV-TR criteria and retrospective analysis of forensic and clinical records. The court appointed forensic experts concluded that the patient suffered from schizotypical disorder, presenting cognitive and volitive impa

Studies of psychiatric morbidity in Nigerian prisons have not involved assessment for specific psychiatric disorders. The general aim of this study was to highlight the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity among convicted inmates at a medium security prison in Nigeria. In a one month period in 1996, 100 inmates (93% males, mean age, 31.4 years) of the prison in Benin City, were assessed, using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-30) and the Psychiatric Assessment Schedule (PAS). The 34 subjects who scored upto GHQ-30 cut-off, four, had specific axis I DSM III-R diagnoses, including, schizophr

Alcohol has been associated with violent crimes and domestic violence across many nations. Various etiological factors were linked to chronic alcohol use and violence including psychiatric comorbidities of perpetrators such as personality disorders, mood disorders, and intermittent explosive disorders. Aggression is the precursor of violence and individuals prone to aggressive behaviors are more likely to commit impulsive violent crimes, especially under the influence of alcohol. Findings from brain studies indicate long-term alcohol consumption induced morphological changes in brain regions i

BACKGROUND: Sexual homicides - and particularly offenders with multiple victims - receive much attention in the general public as well as among forensic experts. The aim of this study was to assess psychiatric disorders in a large sample of sexual murderers and to identify disorders related to multiple sexual homicides.
SAMPLING AND METHODS: Psychiatric court reports from 20 German forensic psychiatrists on 166 men who had committed a sexual homicide were evaluated for psychiatric disorders according to DSM-IV, including standardized instruments for personality disorders (criteria from the St

BACKGROUND: The dual task for forensic mental health care is community protection and treatment of mental disorders. The Short-Term Assessment of Risk and Treatability (START) has become an established tool for risk assessment and care planning in forensic psychiatry. When using the START, items judged as critical factors are chosen to be addressed in the care plan. However, it is not known which critical factors that are of special interest need to be addressed to reduce the risk for future violence.
AIMS: The main aim of this study was to explore how staff's choice of critical factors in th

According to Swedish legislation (LVM) compulsory treatment shall be decided on if someone, due to ongoing abuse of alcohol, drugs or volatile solvents, is in need of care to overcome abuse and if a voluntary intervention is not possible. Very little research has been conducted in Sweden on this particular legislation with regard to the clients' experiences of entire process from assessment to aftercare. We interviewed 74 subjects who were being assessed prior to the court's decision on involuntary care (n=39), or with previous experience of assessment and involuntary care (n=35). The assessme

The authors sent out questionnaires regarding knowledge of statutes governing emergency involuntary hospitalization to psychiatrists in Connecticut and in the District of Columbia. Fifty-five percent (N=207) of the sample in Connecticut and 25% (N=87) of the sample in the District of Columbia responded. The responses showed that few of these psychiatrists had a thorough familiarity with the legal statutes governing emergency involuntary hospitalization in their jurisdictions. The most frequently cited criterion was the dangerousness standard, especially in the District of Columbia sample, and

This study was undertaken to investigate the authors' clinical impression that there are significant differences between the male and female insanity acquittees in Colorado, and that these differences result in significantly different treatment needs. The study sample included 149 patients: 112 men and 37 women committed to the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo as not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). Data were collected from a computerized data system and from chart reviews. The study provides descriptive data regarding demographic, legal, and mental health parameters of these acq
