Effects of mercury addition on microbial community composition and nitrate removal inside permeable reactive barriers.

Permeable reactive barriers (PRBs) remove nitrogen from groundwater by enhancing microbial denitrification. The PRBs consist of woodchips that provide carbon for denitrifiers, but these woodchips also support other anaerobic microbes, including sulfate-reducing bacteria. Some of these anaerobes have the ability to methylate inorganic mercury present in groundwater. Methylmercury is hazardous to human health, so it is essential to understand whether PRBs promote mercury methylation. We examined microbial communities and geochemistry in fresh water and sulfate-enriched PRB flow-through columns b

The Stakeholder Model of voice research: Acknowledging barriers to human rights of all stakeholders in a communicative exchange.

The act of communication is a complex, transient and often abstract phenomenon that involves many stakeholders, each of whom has their own perspective: the speaker, the listener, the observer and the researcher. Current research practices in voice disorder are frequently framed through a single lens - that of the researcher/clinician or their participant/patient. This single lens approach risks overlooking significant barriers to the basic human right of freedom of expression for those with a voice disorder as it omits consideration of the impact of voice disorder on the listener, and consider

Barriers to community-based drug dependence treatment: implications for police roles, collaborations and performance indicators.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, people who use drugs (PWUD) are among the populations at highest risk for HIV infection. In China, PWUD are primarily sentenced to compulsory detainment centres, in which access to healthcare, including HIV treatment and prevention services, is limited or non-existent. In 2008, China's 2008 Anti-Drug Law encouraged the development and use of community-based drug dependence rehabilitation, yet there is limited evidence evaluating the efficacy and challenges of this model in China. In this study, we explore these challenges and describe how cooperation between law enforc

Physician pricing mechanisms and communication barriers behind low patient satisfaction in online dermatology consultations: A mixed-methods cross-sectional study based on the Chunyu Doctor platform.

Amid the rapid advancement of digital health, teledermatology faces distinctive challenges, including incomplete clinical information, the absence of palpation, and asynchronous physician-patient communication, which urgently call for targeted improvement measures. This study aimed to quantify the relationships between physicians' professional titles, consultation volumes, and pricing, and to identify communication shortcomings underlying low-satisfaction reviews, thereby providing evidence for platform improvement and quality enhancement. Using a cross-sectional mixed-methods approach, we ext

Barriers to and facilitators of effective communication in perinatal care: a qualitative study of the experiences of birthing people with sensory, intellectual, and/or developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Effective provider-patient communication is a key element of quality health care, including perinatal care. What constitutes "effective communication" in perinatal care may vary according to the population seeking care, such as women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and sensory disabilities. Research broadly indicates that communication issues are among the barriers to perinatal care experienced by women with disabilities. However, few studies have explicitly explored their communication experiences in this context. The purpose of this study was to understand

Identifying facilitators and barriers to culturally responsive communication for racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minoritized patients when screened for COVID-19 vaccinations: A scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender minoritized groups are considered historically excluded groups and have been disproportionately affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The influence of social determinants of health (SDOH), including access to screening and treatment, and other systemic and structural factors are largely responsible for these disparities. Primary care practitioner (PCP) competence in culturally responsive screening practices will be critical to reducing the impact of systemic and structural factors serving as barriers to screening and trea

The Impact of Pediatric Dermatologic Conditions on Mental Health in Underserved Communities in the United States: Barriers and Strategies for Their Mitigation.

Pediatric dermatologic conditions are associated with significant psychosocial burden and disparities in access to care, particularly among underserved populations in the United States. Chronic skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, acne, psoriasis, and alopecia areata may negatively affect emotional well-being, sleep, self-esteem, quality of life, and social functioning in affected children and caregivers. Structural inequities related to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, insurance coverage, transportation, and healthcare accessibility further contribute to differences in disease burde

Community-Embedded Low-Barrier Care: A Model for Engaging People With Complex Needs in HIV Treatment and Prevention.

People living homeless and people with substance use disorders are at increased risk for HIV but experience multiple intersecting barriers to accessing medical care. Low-barrier care has emerged as a strategy to engage persons with complex needs in care, particularly in the fields of HIV and substance use treatment. We describe our experience implementing low-barrier whole person care for HIV treatment and prevention at 3 community-embedded sites in King County, Washington, and outline key operational and clinic characteristics that helped facilitate success.
