Laparophobia: a cognitive perspective on appetite control in anorexia nervosa.

Decades of research have demonstrated that anorexia nervosa (AN) may be associated with aberrant cognition, yet, its role in maintaining stringent dieting has received relatively little attention from mainstream researchers of eating disorders. The purpose of the present article is to highlight cognitive ('top-down') factors that are considered responsible for anticipatory anxiety of stoutness and frank fat-phobia (laparophobia). A cognitive model proposed departs from the formulation suggesting that phobia of over-eating is superimposed on avoidant tendencies ('environmental autonomy syndrome

Physical Activity for Youth Mental Health in the "Online Era": Risks, Opportunities, and Implementation Priorities.

Today's young people (aged ∼10-24 y) are the first "digital natives" but have become the most sedentary generation on record. These trends have coincided with a widely recognized decline in youth mental health, prompting increasingly polarized debate: some attribute the crisis primarily to smartphones and social media, but large-scale analyses suggest more heterogeneous population-level effects. Therefore, this review examines the role of physical activity (PA) in mental health during the online era; considering how different forms of online engagement relate to youth mental health, with regar

Risk for exercise dependence, eating disorder pathology, alcohol use disorder and addictive behaviors among clients of fitness centers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Exercise dependence (EXD) is considered a behavioral addiction that is often associated with eating disorders. To date, only few studies examined the potential overlap between EXD and other addictive behaviors. Therefore, the present study aimed at investigating the relationship of EXD with pathological buying, pathological video gaming (offline and online), hypersexual behavior, and alcohol use disorder in a sample of clients of fitness centers. METHODS: The following questionnaires were answered by 128 individuals (age M = 26.5, SD = 6.7 years; 71.7% men, 74.2% universi

Acceptability and feasibility of enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy (eCBT) for children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a disabling mental health disorder affecting 1-3% of children and adolescents. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is recommended as the first-line treatment, but is limited by accessibility, availability, and, in some cases, response to treatment. Enhancement with Internet technologies may mitigate these challenges. METHODS: We developed an enhanced CBT (eCBT) treatment package for children and adolescents with OCD to improve treatment effect as well as user-friendliness. This study aims to explore the feasibility, acceptability, and prelim

Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy versus Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Multisite Randomized Controlled Non-Inferiority Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) effectively treats obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), many patients refuse CBT or drop out prematurely, partly because of anxiety regarding exposure and response prevention (ERP) exercises. Inference-based cognitive behavioral therapy (I-CBT) focuses on correcting distorted inferential thinking patterns, enhancing reality-based reasoning, and addressing obsessional doubt by targeting underlying dysfunctional reasoning, without incorporating an ERP component. We hypothesized that I-CBT would be non-inferior to CBT. Additionally, we hyp

The relative associations of shape and weight over-evaluation, preoccupation, dissatisfaction, and fear of weight gain with measures of psychopathology: An extension study in individuals with anorexia nervosa.

Recent research has demonstrated that certain components of body image (i.e., shape and weight over-evaluation, preoccupation, and dissatisfaction) in secondary school students shared a distinct clinical significance because of their differential relation to measures of psychopathology. The present study aimed to replicate and extend on these findings by examining the distinctiveness of these body image constructs, in addition to a fear of weight gain, in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN)-a disorder this is facilitated and maintained by extreme body image concerns. INTRODUCTION: Individuals with exercise addiction (EA) report being unable to stop exercising despite its negative psychological, physical, or social impact. Due to a lack of evidence, EA has so far not been officially recognized as a behavioral addiction. Only one study exists, that investigated mental disorders in individuals with EA by utilizing the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Disorders (SCID-5). The present study followed up on this sample, providing the first longitudinal data on EA. METHODS: All participants of the baseline study were invited to complete validated psychometr

Effects and side effects of a transdiagnostic bias modification intervention in a mixed sample with obsessive-compulsive and/or depressive symptoms-a randomized controlled trial.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depression disorder (MDD) are underdiagnosed and undertreated mental disorders. Prior studies have verified the efficacy of the self-help manual My Metacognitive Training (myMCT) for patients with primary OCD. As depression and OCD share a number of (meta)cognitive biases and dysfunctional coping strategies, we examined the efficacy of myMCT in a mixed patient sample with OCD and/or depression. A total of 80 Italian-speaking individuals with symptoms of OCD and/or depression were randomized to either myMCT or to a waitlist control group (both group

Exercise Addiction and Muscle Dysmorphia: The Role of Emotional Dependence and Attachment.

Background: Both exercise addiction (EA) and muscle dysmorphia (MD) primarily involve the compulsive practice of physical exercise and are classified as behavioral addictions in different lines of research. These types of addictions are frequently comorbid with other addictive pathologies, such as emotional dependence (ED), which is closely related to childhood attachment. This study is presented to address the scarcity of research relating EA and MD with other behavioral addictions. The aims are to analyze the sex differences found in emotional dependence, attachment dimensions, EA and MD; to

[The treatment of cannabis dependence: Clinical work, psychotherapy and evidence].

Identifying compulsive consumption of marijuana in association with another mental disorder (attentional defcit disorder, bipolar disorder, depression or psychosis) presents the challenge of clarifying validated therapeutic strategies, especially within the teen population, in which it shows the highest prevalence. The ever-increasing prevalence and the need for regional treatments, demand that we approach this health matter as a public health issue. The ideological con?icts related to the necessary decriminalization of consumption and the current debate on the medical use of marijuana often c

Overvaluation of body shape/weight and engagement in non-compensatory weight-control behaviors in eating disorders: is there a reciprocal relationship?

BACKGROUND: Overvaluation of body shape/weight is thought to be the core psychopathology underlying eating disorders, which propels engagement in non-compensatory weight-control behaviors. In turn, these behaviors lead to binge eating and/or maintenance of low weight thereby reinforcing overvaluation. The present study investigated the reciprocal relationship between overvaluation and engagement in non-compensatory weight-control behaviors (defined in two ways: restrictive eating and compulsive exercise) among women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa (N = 237). METHOD: Partici

Exercise addiction risk in recreational athletes: a cross-sectional study of psychological distress and food choice motivations in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Exercise addiction (EA) represents an emerging mental health issue among athletic communities, manifested by compulsive exercise with negative psychological and physiological consequences. Although EA phenotypically coincides with overtraining syndrome and burnout, no study has explored this athlete mental health continuum in recreational athletes, especially regarding comorbid psychological distress and maladaptive food choice motivations. OBJECTIVE: To explore EA risk as an athlete mental health concern among Jordanian recreational athletes, examining the EAI screening-positive

Relationship between nonexercise activity and mood in patients with eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Many patients with eating disorders (EDs) engage in excessive and compulsive physical activity (pathological exercise, PE) to regulate negative mood or to "burn calories." PE can lead to negative health consequences. Non-exercise activity (NEA) bears the potential to serve as intervention target to counteract PE and problematic eating behaviors since it has been associated with positive mood effects. However, to date, there is no investigation on whether the positive link between NEA and mood seen in the healthy translates to patients with ED. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To study pote
