The cost-effectiveness of an intensive treatment protocol for severe dyslexia in children.

Studies of interventions for dyslexia have focused entirely on outcomes related to literacy. In this study, we considered a broader picture assessing improved quality of life compared with costs. A model served as a tool to compare costs and effects of treatment according to a new protocol and care as usual. Quality of life was measured and valued by proxies using a general quality-of-life instrument (EQ-5D). We considered medical cost and non-medical cost (e.g. remedial teaching). The model computed cost per successful treatment and cost per quality adjusted life year (QALY) in time. About 75

Self-perceived digital literacy, creative self-efficacy, and self-reported innovative behavior among undergraduate nursing students in Anhui, China: a multi-institutional cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing studies have separately linked self-perceived digital literacy with self-reported innovative behavior and the clinical practice environment with creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior. A related association pattern has been reported among Chinese medical students, but joint evidence from multi-institutional nursing samples remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the measurement structure and examine the three-variable association pattern among self-perceived general digital literacy, creative self-efficacy, and self-reported innovative behavior in nursing students

Impact of literacy on the functional connectivity of vision and language related networks.

Learning to read leads to functional and structural changes in cortical brain areas related to vision and language. Previous evidence suggests that the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA), a region devoted to the recognition of letter strings in literate persons, acts as an interface between both systems. While different studies have performed univariate analyses to study the effects of literacy on brain function, little is known about its impact on whole functional networks, especially when literacy is acquired during adulthood. We investigated functional connectivity in three groups of adults with

Gangrenous Cholecystitis in a 54-Year-Old Male With Schizophrenia and Other Barriers to Care: A Case Report.

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric condition that can contribute to delays in the diagnosis and treatment of health conditions. Factors like poor judgment, decreased medical literacy, cognitive barriers, and delayed seeking of therapy can result in worse outcomes of the disease. Acute gangrenous cholecystitis is a severe complication of acute cholecystitis, requiring immediate surgical intervention. We present the case of a 54-year-old Spanish-speaking male with schizophrenia who presented with seven days of progressively worsening right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain, as well as associated nau

Preoperative imaging of sensorineural hearing loss in pediatric candidates for cochlear implantation.

Cochlear implantation is the only U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for children with marked bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. It provides auditory benefits that range from simple sound detection to substantial word understanding. Improved hearing through cochlear implantation has been demonstrated to enhance the rate of language acquisition, enable development of spoken language, and advance literacy in deaf children. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography both have roles in the preoperative assessment of inner-ear abnormalities, cochlear nerve deficiency, a

Determinants of household decision making autonomy among rural married women based on Ethiopian demography health survey: a multilevel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Decisions made at the household level have great impact on the welfare of the individual, the local community, as well as the welfare of the nation. Women's independent decision on reproductive health increases women's access to health information and utilization of reproductive services. This has great impact on maternal and child health outcomes. However, women in developing or low-income countries often have limited autonomy and control over their household decisions. Therefore the main purpose of this research project is to investigate the potential determinants of rural wome

"Now you're talking my language" - Improving health literacy and patient-directed knowledge of scientific abstracts through provision of plain language summaries created by artificial intelligence: A cross sectional infodemiology study.

BACKGROUND: Due to free and digital availability of scientific abstracts in medical journals, as well as search engines including PubMed, many patients are increasingly looking to these as reliable and trusted sources of information, amidst an information ecosystem of potential mis- and disinformation. However, such scientific abstracts are difficult-to-read by the lay community, as they are not written purposefully for a lay audience. The Plain Language Summary now offers such readers a new medium to engage with, thereby helping with their health literacy and understanding of the research fin

Prevalence and factors associated with sexual and reproductive health literacy among youth living with HIV in Uganda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Adequate sexual and reproductive health literacy (SRHL) among young people has been linked to informed sexual behaviours. Studies on SRHL have largely been conducted among the general adolescent population. Little is known about youth aged 15-24 years living with human immunodeficiency virus (YLHIV). There is a possible lack of SRHL in this population, considering the high rate of teenage pregnancies and unprotected sex reported by YLHIV. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and associated personal and environmental factors for SRHL among YLHIV at a high-volume urban HIV Clini

Assessing and Improving the Effectiveness of Online Patient Education Materials on Essential Vocal Tremor: A Comprehensive Evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Health literacy, a strong indicator of health outcomes, is an important aspect of good patient care. With an increasing reliance on the Internet for health information, online patient materials should be easily understood by the average reader. The American Medical Association (AMA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend that patient education materials be written at a sixth-grade level. Creating effective digital information requires careful consideration of not only word choice, but also many other factors including actionability, comprehensiveness, evidence, and vis

The 1990s and beyond: determining the need for community health and primary care nurses for rural populations.

Increased numbers of primary care and advanced practice nurses with unique generalist skills will be required to meet the accelerating physiologic and sociocultural health care needs of rural populations. Several factors have been identified that will influence the demands and position of community-based nurses in rural practice settings during the next decade. A back-to-basics type of health care offered out of a growing elderly population; technological breakthroughs that make it possible for more chronically ill patients to live at home; serious substance abuse and other adolescent problems

Integrating longitudinal seizure, medication, and quality of life data into epilepsy eare: A randomized crossover study of an Epic-integrated dashboard.

OBJECTIVE: Epilepsy treatment decisions require clinicians and patients to synthesize longitudinal seizure diaries, anti-seizure medication (ASM) history, quality of life (QOL), and clinical data, which are often distributed across multiple sources. We evaluated whether an electronic health record (EHR)-integrated Epilepsy Dashboard improved patient/caregiver and clinician short-term outcomes compared with standard clinical practice. METHODS: We conducted a prospective randomized crossover study in outpatient adult and pediatric epilepsy clinics at the University of California, San Francisco.

Perception, assessment, and coaching: a systematic review and taxonomy of computer vision-based physical rehabilitation techniques.

The digital transformation of rehabilitation training has become a public health imperative driven by a global demand that outstrips professional medical resources and is compounded by a deficit in public rehabilitation literacy. As traditional hospital-centric models reach their scalability limits, there is a critical necessity for accessible home-based care solutions to ensure patients do not miss optimal recovery windows. To evaluate computer vision as a potential solution, this paper conducts a systematic review following the PRISMA 2020 reporting framework. We identify that its clinical m
