BACKGROUND: Mobility is important and often affected in older adults. Mobility is related to cognitive function, which is associated with age-related decline. Computer-based cognitive training (CCT) is increasingly used to treat such cognitive deficits. Whether CCT also has an effect on mobility is not yet clear.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this systematic review was to identify and evaluate available intervention studies investigating the effect of CCT on mobility-related outcome parameters in healthy older adults.
METHODS: Studies with CCT interventions with mobility outcome parameters (gait, ba

PURPOSE: An inherent deficiency in the understanding of the biomechanics of fractures is the reliance on cadaveric or other nonphysiological injury models resulting from the prohibitive ethical and practical considerations of conducting injury studies in live participants. We describe a novel methodology for studying injury mechanisms using in vivo injury videos obtained from Youtube.com demonstrating injuries as they occur in real time and correlating them with the resulting injury radiographs.
METHODS: Over 1000 video clips of potential ankle fractures were assessed for clear visualization

PURPOSE: Computer enhanced visual learning is a new method to train residents to perform surgery using components and provide them with access to a personalized surgical feedback archive using the Internet. At the parent institution in Chicago we have already noted that this method is effective to train residents to perform orchiopexy. To assess whether this new methodology to enhance resident surgical instruction is generalizable we performed a prospective, multi-institutional clinical trial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively compared ratings of resident skills in performing pediatric

A computer-aided speechreading assessment and training system is presented. It is intended to be one component of a comprehensive aural rehabilitation program for preretirement adults with acquired mild-to-moderate hearing loss. Each lesson focuses on a different viseme which is practiced using the 'discourse tracking' method. The system allows the evaluation of the basic skills necessary for lipreading, i.e. good visual speech decoding and effective use of lingustic redundancy and transmitter feedback, by evaluating separately tracking rate, strategy, and types of errors.

We developed an e-learning tool in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for medical students in Germany and tested it at Rhenish-Westphalian Technical University, Aachen. Our cross-sectional evaluation study is an innovative approach since the topic is yet to be implemented in medical education. Other AAC tools do not target medical students. Our study underlines the importance of AAC for medical doctors. Universities should include AAC in their lectures to prepare medical students for their clinical practice. The "AACHEN" tool is a first step.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular monitoring should be applied routinely to avoid residual neuromuscular block. However, anaesthetists often refrain from applying it, even when the equipment is available. We aimed to increase neuromuscular monitoring in six Danish anaesthesia departments via e-learning.
METHODS: Interrupted time series study, with baseline data from a previous study and prospective data collection after implementation of the module, which was available for 2 weeks from 21 November 2016. We included all patients receiving general anaesthesia with muscle relaxants until 30 April 2017.

The aims of this study were to evaluate and compare the performance of dental students in interpreting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans using two learning methods (conventional and digital interactive learning) and to examine the usability of the digital learning object (DLO). The DLO consisted of tutorials about MRI and anatomic and functional aspects of the TMJ. In 2014, dental students in their final year of study who were enrolled in the elective "MRI Interpretation of the TMJ" course comprised the study sample. After exclusions for nonattendanc

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a complex multisystem debilitating disease. Despite its complexity, health care providers who are not SCD experts receive little formal education on SCD. An open-access, educational website, "Emergency Department Sickle Cell Disease: Crisis Management and Beyond," was created to provide education about SCD to emergency department (ED) providers who are not SCD experts but who provide care for patients with SCD. Electronic surveys were used to conduct a formal evaluation of the accuracy and relevance of the website's content, as well as the effectiveness of the educ

Four groups of poor readers were identified among a population of students with learning disabilities attending a special class in secondary school: normal readers; specific poor decoders; specific poor comprehenders, and general poor readers (deficits in both decoding and comprehension). These students were then trained with a software program designed to encourage either their word decoding skills or their text comprehension skills. After 5 weeks of training, we observed that the students experiencing word reading deficits and trained with the decoding software improved primarily in the read

Realistic models in virtual reality training applications are considered to positively influence presence and performance. The experimental study presented, analyzed the effect of simulation fidelity (static vs. animated audience) on presence as a prerequisite for performance in a prototype virtual fear of public speaking application with a sample of N = 40 academic non-phobic users. Contrary to the state of research, no influence was shown on virtual presence and perceived realism, but an animated audience led to significantly higher effects in anxiety during giving a talk. Although these fin

Regarding the impact of visceral dysfunction on quality of life, bowel and bladder management is a very important problem. The management of the patient with neurological bladder is often a source of uncertainty for both patients and healthcare personnel. Since the need of specialized training is growing, two CME e-learning courses have been developed to provide physicians and nurses competencies for the enhancement of the daily life of the patients. The present study aims at evaluating courses attendance and outcomes. Attendance data confirm the interest for both courses. The results document

UNLABELLED: The concept of "learning by doing" has become less acceptable, particularly when invasive procedures and high-risk care are required. Restrictions on medical educators have prompted them to seek alternative methods to teach medical knowledge and gain procedural experience. Fortunately, the last decade has seen an explosion of the number of tools available to enhance medical education: web-based education, virtual reality, and high fidelity patient simulation. This paper presents some of the consensus statements in regard to these tools agreed upon by members of the Educational Tech

This study was conducted to explore the use of interactive videodisc instruction (IVDI) with cooperative learning strategies. Baccalaureate students in their junior year were assigned to one of three types of groups based on prenursing grade point average: homogeneous average achievement, homogeneous high achievement, and heterogeneous mixed achievement students. Groups of three to five students viewed a lesson related to auscultation of heart sounds using IVDI and were videotaped throughout the lesson. There were no significant differences among the groups in their interaction frequencies, co
