Design of a noninvasive and smart hand tremor attenuation system with active control: a simulation study.

This paper presents the design and simulation of a handheld device for people with hand tremor, such as Parkinson's and essential tremor patients. This device can be used as a pen for smartphones or as a spoon. The designed system includes two links, which are connected to two servomotors, which are mounted in orthogonal directions. To attenuate the effect of hand tremor on the tip of device, PID and computed torque methods are used to actively control the system. These controllers are used to control the rotation of the motors for moving the links in opposite directions of the hand tremor. Pe

Developing the online survey.

Institutions of higher education are now using Internet-based technology tools to conduct surveys for data collection. Research shows that the type and quality of responses one receives with online surveys are comparable with what one receives in paper-based surveys. Data collection can take place on Web-based surveys, e-mail-based surveys, and personal digital assistants/Smartphone devices. Web surveys can be subscription templates, software packages installed on one's own server, or created from scratch using Web programming development tools. All of these approaches have their advantages an

Importance of combined use of preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging and intraoperative 18F-FDG handheld gamma probe detection in recurrent papillary thyroid cancer.

Radio-guided surgery using an intra-operative positron emission tomography (PET) probe in recurrent thyroid cancer (RTC) can be a useful method for tumor localization, verification of complete excision and to decrease operation time. We describe a case of RTC whose serum thyroglobulin (Tg) level was 5.6ng/mL. Preoperative fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) revealed two focal abnormalities in the anterior tracheal and right upper mediastinal regions and a handheld gamma probe was used intraoperatively to identify the hot areas seen o

Pressure perception in the normal lower extremity and in the tarsal tunnel syndrome.

For quantitative sensory testing to be useful for the management of peripheral nerve problems, a normative database must be developed. The Pressure-Specified Sensory Device (PSSD), a handheld instrument whose hemispherical metal probe tips are connected via a force transducer to a computer, has been found reliable and valid for the upper extremity. In the present study, the PSSD was used to measure the cutaneous pressure threshold at four lower extremity sites in 34 normal adults and in 22 patients with tarsal tunnel syndrome (6 bilateral). Each of the 28 limbs that was symptomatic for tarsal

Novel Use of Portable Audiometry to Track Hearing Fluctuations in Menière's Disease: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Menière's Disease (MD) is a disorder of the inner ear consisting of episodic attacks of vertigo associated with aural fullness, tinnitus, and fluctuating hearing loss. Hearing levels in MD can often fluctuate over time, and may eventually decline permanently in a step-wise fashion. There are no current studies examining daily hearing fluctuations for prolonged periods in patients with MD. Portable audiometry has the potential to allow the patient to monitor their hearing on a daily basis without attending a center for formal audiology. The objective of this pilot study was to ass
