Integrated control of juvenile Ixodes scapularis parasitizing Peromyscus leucopus in residential settings in Connecticut, United States.

Lyme disease continues to be the most common vector-borne disease in the United States with an estimated 330,000 human cases annually. In the eastern United States, the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the primary vector of the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, and the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, is a primary reservoir host. In four residential neighborhoods in Connecticut over three years, we tested the effectiveness of different low-toxicity integrated tick management approaches to control larval and nymphal I. scapularis parasitizing P. leucopus. Combination

Associations between injection risk and community disadvantage among suburban injection drug users in southwestern Connecticut, USA.

Increases in drug abuse, injection, and opioid overdoses in suburban communities led us to study injectors residing in suburban communities in southwestern Connecticut, US. We sought to understand the influence of residence on risk and injection-associated diseases. Injectors were recruited by respondent-driven sampling and interviewed about sociodemographics, somatic and mental health, injection risk, and interactions with healthcare, harm reduction, substance abuse treatment, and criminal justice systems. HIV, hepatitis B and C (HBV and HCV) serological testing was also conducted. Our sample

Laboratory practices for prenatal Group B streptococcal screening and reporting--Connecticut, Georgia, and Minnesota, 1997-1998.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis in the United States. CDC, in collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends that laboratories adopt optimal screening practices to identify GBS and to promptly report test results so that GBS-colonized pregnant women can receive antibiotics during labor. To assess GBS screening practices in clinical laboratories, state health departments surveyed laboratories in Connecticut, Georgia, and Minnesota, participants in the Emerging Infections Program. Understanding the barriers to engagement in a passive tick surveillance program to inform public health strategies in Connecticut.

The incidence of tick-borne diseases is rapidly increasing in the United States, and public health surveillance systems are essential for monitoring these trends. Passive tick surveillance provides data on the distribution of tick species, the prevalence of infection in ticks, and the risk of human infection with tick-borne pathogens. The Passive Tick Surveillance Program at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES-PTSP) receives ticks from the community and tests them for common tick-borne pathogens. Although overall submissions have increased (2016-2023), recent patterns show a

Connecticut's Novel Prenatal Substance Exposure Policy Is Associated With Declining CPS Reports And Foster Placements.

In 2019, Connecticut became the first state to implement a deidentified notification policy for infants with prenatal substance exposure in response to updated provisions contained in the federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) of 1974. Our study aimed to test whether Connecticut's notification policy was associated with an increase in Child Protective Services (CPS) interactions for this population. We analyzed child welfare and vital records over the course of a sixty-six-month time frame starting two years before the policy took effect. We used interrupted time series model

Predictive temperature-dependency of tick questing activity in France and relevance to Lyme disease risk in Connecticut.

Ticks are important arthropod vectors of many human and veterinary diseases in temperate regions. Ticks are highly sensitive to desiccation and questing behaviour in search for animal hosts is driven by ambient temperature. This study assessed the association of meteorological factors with the monthly abundance of nymph Ixodes ricinus in three differing botanically classified homogenous study sites over a two-year period in France and then compared predicted abundance with that observed in the third year. We then applied the same approach to Lyme Disease (LD) cases that are notifiable in Conne

An exploratory study of the prevalence and adverse associations of in-school traditional bullying and cyberbullying among adolescents in Connecticut.

Bullying, traditional or cyber, among adolescents, is a public health concern. In this study, we explored frequencies and correlates of different forms of bullying among Connecticut high-school students. Youth Risk Behavior Survey data from 2019 from Connecticut adolescents (N = 1814) were used. χ2 tests and survey-weighted logistic regressions examined relationships between bullying subgroups (in-school traditional bullying (ISTB) only, cyberbullying only, and both) and mental concerns, risk behaviors, academic performance, physical health, and receipt of social support, with the logistic reg

Musculoskeletal Urgent Care Centers in Connecticut Restrict Patients with Medicaid Insurance Based on Policy and Location.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal urgent care centers are a new development in the urgent care landscape. Anecdotally, these centers are known to screen patients based on their insurance status, denying care to those with Medicaid insurance. It is important to know whether the practice of denying musculoskeletal urgent care to patients with Medicaid insurance is widespread because this policy could exacerbate existing musculoskeletal healthcare disparities. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do musculoskeletal urgent care centers in Connecticut provide access for patients with Medicaid insurance? (2) Do muscu

Decline in the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses following the implementation of a paid sick leave law in Connecticut.

BACKGROUND: Workers with paid sick leave may have a lower rate of occupational injuries compared with other workers. This study sought to determine whether there was a decline in the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses following the implementation of a paid sick leave law in Connecticut (CT). METHODS: Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics was used to calculate the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses in CT in the 3 years before (2009-11) and after (2012-14) the law was implemented. These numbers were compared with New York (NY) and the United States, and between the occupati

Two Introductions of Lyme Disease into Connecticut: A Geospatial Analysis of Human Cases from 1984 to 2012.

Lyme disease has become the most prevalent vector-borne disease in the United States and results in morbidity in humans, especially children. We used historical case distributions to explain vector-borne disease introductions and subsequent geographic expansion in the absence of disease vector data. We used geographic information system analysis of publicly available Connecticut Department of Public Health case data from 1984, 1985, and 1991 to 2012 for the 169 towns in Connecticut to identify the yearly clusters of Lyme disease cases. Our analysis identified the spatial and temporal origins o

Sun protection practices in preadolescents and adolescents: a school-based survey of almost 25,000 Connecticut schoolchildren.

Sun protection practices in children and adolescents fall well below national recommendations. We present the results of a survey of sun protection use and other health-related behaviors in a sample of Connecticut Caucasian students aged 9 through 18 years (N = 24,645). Our objectives were to estimate the prevalence of sun protection use and to evaluate the relationship between sun protection use and health-risk behaviors and attitudes about appearance. Time trend and age-period-cohort effects on incidence of esophageal cancer in Connecticut, 1935-89.

The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence pattern of esophageal cancer in Connecticut (USA) during the past decades, and to identify components of birth cohort, period, and and age as determinants of the observed time trends by regression modelling. This study is based on all of the esophageal cancer cases reported to the Connecticut Tumor Registry between 1935 and 1989. A total of 6,310 incident cases were included. Results indicate that among males, the overall age-adjusted incidence rate of esophageal cancer increased after 1935 and peaked between 1955 and 1959. Since then, inc

Epidemiological and clinical features of 1,149 persons with Lyme disease identified by laboratory-based surveillance in Connecticut.

Laboratory-based surveillance of Lyme disease in Connecticut during 1984 and 1985 identified 3,098 persons with suspected Lyme disease; 1,149 were defined as cases. Lyme disease incidence in Connecticut towns ranged from none to 1,407 cases per 100,000 population in 1985. A comparison of 1985 data with data from 1977 epidemiologic studies indicated that incidence increased by 129 percent to 453 percent in towns previously known to be endemic for Lyme disease and that Lyme disease had spread northward into towns thought to be free of Lyme disease in 1977. Children aged five to 14 years had the

Antibodies to Rickettsia rickettsii in Peromyscus leucopus from a focus of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Connecticut.

During 1980-1982, white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were captured in Newtown, Connecticut, an area where Rickettsia rickettsii, the etiologic agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever, is thought to be enzootic. An indirect microimmunofluorescence test identified specific antibodies to this organism in 16 of 237 (7%) sera: titration end points for 14 samples were relatively high (1:128-1:2048). Antibodies were detected in mice during 1980 and 1981 with monthly prevalences varying from 8 to 22%. These results suggest that P. leucopus may be involved in the ecology of R. rickettsii and that th

Trends in the incidence of cancer of the corpus uteri in Connecticut, 1964-1979, in relation to consumption of exogenous estrogens.

The incidence of cancer of the uterine corpus diagnosed in the localized 1964 and 1969. During the next six years, however, it increased substantially, reaching a peak in 1975, followed by an irregular decline through 1979. Women aged 45-64 years showed both the largest increase and the sharpest decline. The incidence of tumors diagnosed with regional or distant spread has been rising slightly but consistently through the period 1970-1979; this upward trend is statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Rates corrected for hysterectomized women not truly at risk are 40-50% higher than uncorr

Child maltreatment-related children's emergency department visits before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Connecticut.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of national emergency department (ED) data demonstrate a decrease in visits coded for physical abuse during the pandemic period. However, no study to date has examined the incidence of multiple child maltreatment types (physical abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect), within a single state while considering state-specific closure policies. Furthermore, no similar study has utilized detailed chart review to identify cases, nor compared hospital data to Child Protective Services (CPS) reports. OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of child maltreatment-related ED visits

Whole Genome Sequencing and Phylogenetic Analysis of Rabies Viruses from Bats in Connecticut, USA, 2018-2019.

We performed whole genome sequencing and genetic characterization of rabies viruses (RABV) detected in bats submitted to the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (CVMDL) during 2018-2019. Among 88 bats submitted to CVMDL, six brain samples (6.8%, 95% confidence interval: 1.6% to 12.1%) tested positive by direct fluorescent antibody test. RABVs were detected in big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus, n = 4), a hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus, n = 1), and an unidentified bat species (n = 1). Complete coding sequences of four out of six detected RABVs were obtained. In phylogenetic analysi

Prevalence of hepatitis C virus infection among clients of HIV counseling and testing sites--Connecticut, 1999.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a common chronic bloodborne virus infection that affects an estimated 2.7 million persons in the United States. HCV infection causes an estimated 8,000-10,000 deaths each year from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma and is the leading reason for liver transplantation. Because injection drug use is a major risk factor for both human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and HCV transmission, publicly funded HIV counseling and testing sites (HIV CTS) may have a role in HCV prevention. To evaluate the need for HCV services at these sites, the Connecticut Department of Public
