Impact of COVID-19-associated anxiety on the adherence to intravitreal injection in patients with macular diseases a year after the initial outbreak.

BACKGROUND: As the primary burden of treating COVID-19 patients began to ease in the United Kingdom, ophthalmology clinic volume within the National Health Service has since recovered. Alarmingly, the rate of non-attendance remains higher than the pre-pandemic level. PURPOSE: The purpose was to assess how the perceived risk of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) influences the willingness of individuals with sight-threatening macular conditions to attend intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) injection appointments during the second wave of the pandemic.

Sexually transmitted infections in the military environment.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have always been a major health issue affecting military personnel in all types of services and in all armed forces around the world, especially during deployments and in operational settings. Although the research shows that STIs are still reported in the military, the epidemiological risk for contracting a sexually transmitted infection is much lower nowadays than it was in the past. It is important, however, that service members are routinely screened for sexually transmitted diseases. Because of a high prevalence of STIs in the general population as w

'To Awaken the Medical and Hygienic Conscience of the People': Cultivating Enlightened Citizenship through Free Public Healthcare in Haiti from 1915-34.

This paper addresses the relative scholarly oversight of the history of public health in Haiti through a close examination of the colonial public health system constructed and operated by the United States (US) during its occupation of Haiti from 1915 to 1934. More than simply documenting a neglected aspect of Caribbean history, the paper offers the US occupation of Haiti as a remarkably clear example of a failed attempt to use a free public health service to cultivate a health conscientiousness among the Haitian citizenry through the aggressive treatment of highly visible ailments such as cat

Incidence and Prevalence of Infectious Diseases and Their Risk Factors among Patients Who Use Visiting Nursing Services in Japan.

This study aimed to clarify the incidence of infectious diseases and the associated risk factors among patients who use visiting nursing services in Japan. We conducted a one-year follow up cohort study with 419 participants. The incidence and period prevalence rate of infectious diseases were 0.63 and 15.0%, respectively. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, the presence of chronic respiratory failure, Parkinson's disease, dermatosis other than pressure ulcers, and the inability to perform oral self-care were significantly related to the contraction of an infectious disease.

[Dystonia.].

Dystonia is defined as a syndrome of sustained involuntary muscle contractions, frequently causing twisting, repetitive movements and abnormal postures. Categorisation of the dystonia syndromes is variable and depends on etiology, age at onset, distribution of symptoms or genetic causes, reflecting the variability of the clinical spectrum of these diseases and the many underlying causes. The prevalence of the dystonias is largely unknown, as few epidemiological studies have been carried out and many of these have been service based rather than community based. This article reviews the phenomen

A survey of problematic sexualized behaviors of children in the New York City Child Welfare System:estimates of problem, impact on services, and need for training.

Forty-eight of 52 (92%) agencies contracted with the New York City Administration for Children's Services (ACS) responded to a survey about problematic sexualized behaviors (PSB) of children in different levels of care within the child welfare system. Results revealed that almost all agencies reported PSB within their foster boarding home and residential treatment centers. A majority of agencies perceived PSB to be a significant problem for which staff and families were not sufficiently trained. These findings highlight many avenues for advocacy, clinical intervention, and staff development.

[Exploring the issue of cervical cancer prevention and control in women living with HIV/AIDS].

Shared risk factors mean that women engaging in unprotected sex are at risk of contracting both the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the human papillomavirus (HPV). As HIV suppresses bodily immune systems, an HIV-positive woman with HPV will likely see a faster progression of cancer cells around the cervix. Therefore, it is important to prevent and control cervical cancer in HIV-positive women. Findings from the literature on this topic include: 1) HIV-positive women face a relatively greater risk of: HPV surveillance, contracting high-risk HPV subtypes, contracting more subtypes of HPV,

Homelessness and the response to emerging infectious disease outbreaks: lessons from SARS.

During the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in Toronto, the potential introduction of SARS into the homeless population was a serious concern. Although no homeless individual in Toronto contracted SARS, the outbreak highlighted the need to develop an outbreak preparedness plan that accounts for unique issues related to homeless people. We conducted key informant interviews with homeless service providers and public health officials (n = 17) and identified challenges specific to the homeless population in the areas of communication, infection control, isolation and quarant

Modeling Lyme disease host animal habitat suitability, West Point, New York.

As the most frequently reported vector-borne disease among active component U.S. service members, with an incidence rate of 16 cases per 100,000 person-years in 2011, Lyme disease poses both a challenge to healthcare providers in the Military Health System and a threat to military readiness. Spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick, infection with the bacterial cause of Lyme disease can have lasting effects that may lead to medical discharge from the military. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is situated in a highly endemic area in New York State. To identify probable are

Disruptions in maternal health service use during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020: experiences from 37 health facilities in low-income and middle-income countries.

The COVID-19 pandemic has heterogeneously affected use of basic health services worldwide, with disruptions in some countries beginning in the early stages of the emergency in March 2020. These disruptions have occurred on both the supply and demand sides of healthcare, and have often been related to resource shortages to provide care and lower patient turnout associated with mobility restrictions and fear of contracting COVID-19 at facilities. In this paper, we assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the use of maternal health services using a time series modelling approach developed to

Impact of COVID-19 on the surgical profile of vascular surgery patients at a tertiary hospital in Curitiba, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare services reduced the number of elective procedures performed. Vascular surgery patients are a group at risk of contracting severe forms of the infection, but are also susceptible to complications of their underlying diseases if they do not receive routine care. It is therefore necessary to understand the direct and indirect impacts and consequences of the pandemic on vascular patients. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of 1 year of the pandemic on a vascular surgery service and changes to the profile of surgeries during the same period. MET

Cruise shipping supply chains and the impacts of disruptions: The case of the Caribbean.

Cruise shipping supply chains have unique characteristics where product and service providers accommodate stringent requirements related to the nature of the cruise product. Since cruise ships are floating resorts that must be resupplied during their short port rotations, they require customized procurement practices. The sustainability of such practices is investigated through the lenses of contract dynamics among actors, including sourcing patterns, consumption patterns, pricing, and delivery patterns. The disruptions caused by hurricanes in the Caribbean underline the challenge the industry

Leveraging Health Department Capacities, Partnerships, and Health Insurance for Infectious Disease Response in Massachusetts, 2014-2018.

Policies facilitating integration of public health programs can improve the public health response, but the literature on approaches to integration across multiple system levels is limited. We describe the efforts of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to integrate its HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infection (STI), and tuberculosis response through policies that mandated contracted organizations to submit specimens for testing to the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory; co-test blood specimens for HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis; integrate HIV, viral

When "Advances" Become Substitutes for Access: A Systems Critique of Children's Dentistry in NHS England and the Normalisation of Extraction, Containment, and Planned Tooth Loss.

Background: England is a high-income country with a predominantly publicly funded health system organised around the National Health Service (NHS). Yet children's oral health outcomes continue to reflect a persistent access and prevention gap, with late presentation and hospital-based extractions remaining common. Objective: To present a policy-facing, evidence-informed critique of how structural constraints in NHS dentistry shape paediatric clinical pathways-often converting "advances" (biological caries management, silver diamine fluoride, and planned extraction pathways for compromised perm
