Perinatal Outcomes After Sleeve Gastrectomy Compared to a Matched Control Group.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy after sleeve gastrectomy is increasingly common but outcomes data are limited. AIMS: To evaluate perinatal outcomes following sleeve gastrectomy compared to a matched non-bariatric control group with similar pre-pregnancy BMI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We undertook a retrospective cohort study (2016-2022) of pregnant women with prior sleeve gastrectomy (n = 520) versus no bariatric surgery (n = 58 777). Following matching for maternal age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, parity, smoking, Australian vs. overseas-born and delivery year, there were 469 post-sleeve gastrectomy

A protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial of an online cancer bereavement group.

BACKGROUND: The loss of a loved one to cancer brings unique difficulties that affect the bereavement experience. Mixed evidence exists for the effectiveness of in-person group interventions for bereaved caregivers, with barriers to accessing support including perceived stigmatisation and geographical constraints. Online bereavement interventions offer an accessible means of providing grief support at the individual and group level. Research supports the effectiveness of online groups for those bereaved by cancer although most existing studies have examined peer-led online groups only, while em

ABO blood group and risk of pre-eclampsia: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: It appears that some ABO blood groups may be a risk factor for venous thrombosis. The association between ABO group and risk of pre-eclampsia remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between pre-eclampsia and ABO groups. METHODS: A retrospective case-control (1:2) study in a prospective monocentric registry including 20171 pregnancies was performed. Women with pre-eclampsia and severe pre-eclampsia were identified. Controls were matched according to age, parity, year of delivery and body mass index. Blood groups were considered. RESULTS: T

Directing group-controlled regioselectivity in an enzymatic C-H bond oxygenation.

Highly regioselective remote hydroxylation of a natural product scaffold is demonstrated by exploiting the anchoring mechanism of the biosynthetic P450 monooxygenase PikCD50N-RhFRED. Previous studies have revealed structural and biochemical evidence for the role of a salt bridge between the desosamine N,N-dimethylamino functionality of the natural substrate YC-17 and carboxylate residues within the active site of the enzyme, and selectivity in subsequent C-H bond functionalization. In the present study, a substrate-engineering approach was conducted that involves replacing desosamine with vari

Comparison of forgiveness and anger-reduction group treatments: a randomized controlled trial.

Interventions to promote forgiveness are effective. However, in what ways and in comparison to what other treatments is still unresolved. College students (n=112) who had been hurt in the past and struggled to overcome their negative experiences of it participated in this study. They were randomly assigned to one of two treatments, one focused on promoting forgiveness and one focused on reducing anger for past hurts, or a waiting list control. Treatment consisted of six 90-minute sessions held in small groups led by one facilitator over the course of 3 weeks. Results of three-level (time withi

Behavioral and cognitive group treatment for fear of flying: a randomized controlled trial.

In a long-standing fear-of-flying program, persons with fear of flying (N=150) were after a diagnostic assessment and individual preparation phase randomly assigned to either a 1-day behavioral group treatment (BGT) program, a 2-day cognitive-behavioral group treatment (CBGT) program or a waiting list (WL) control group. A post-treatment flight on a commercial airline measured participants' ability to fly. Different self-report flight anxiety questionnaires were completed before, during and after treatment at 3-, 6- and 12-month follow-up. Results indicated that both treatments were superior t

Oculomotor control in a group of very low birth weight (VLBW) children.

VLBW infants are at risk of lesions including intraventricular haemorrhage and periventricular leucomalacia. Those with normal IQ still present with reading difficulties. Oculomotor performance was assessed on 14 VLBWs (IQ > 85) and 15 full-term age-matched controls. Anti-saccade errors were significantly higher for the VLBWs (78%) compared to full terms (62%) (P = 0.02). Smooth pursuit latency was longer for the VLBWs compared to the full terms. Greater anti-saccade errors may be indicative of a lesion affecting the frontal cortex or developmental delay. Oculomotor deficits in VLBW children m

[Testosterone treatment of delayed puberty: a longitudinal study in relation to a control group].

OBJECTIVE: Delayed puberty is a very common clinical situation that affects a great number of adolescents. We analyzed the effects that testosterone therapy produces in this situation, including the start of puberty and, therefore, lessening the psychological effects that this delay causes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We carried out a longitudinal study, in which we followed the growth and maturation of 32 boys from the age of 14 to 19 years. The sample was divided into a control group (n = 17) and a treatment group (n = 15). The treatment group received 50 mg/month of testosterone enantate depot d

Tridimensional personality questionnaire: assessment in patients with social phobia and a control group.

We administered the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire to 40 control subjects and to 47 social phobia patients who met Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R (SCID) criteria for social phobia and participated in a multicenter treatment study. Multiple comparisons with Bonferroni correction showed a significant increase in total Harm Avoidance scale scores and all four subscale scores for the social phobia group. On a Reward Dependence subscale that measures persistence versus irresoluteness the mean was significantly lower in the social phobia group than the control group. Present f

Cognitive-behavioral group therapy versus group psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder among college students: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: In this randomized controlled trial, cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was compared to group psychotherapy (GPT), a credible, structurally equivalent control condition that included only nonspecific factors of group treatment (such as group dynamics). METHODS: Participants were 45 college students at the University of Colorado with a primary diagnosis of SAD. Each treatment condition comprised eight group sessions lasting 2 hr each. Independent assessors (blind to treatment assignment) assessed participants at baseline and posttreatment wit

Comparison of Disorder-Specific Group CBT and Generic Group CBT in Treating Adolescents with Social Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Social anxiety disorder is one of the most common disorders in adolescence. It is associated with severe distress, negative long-term consequences, and chronicity. Cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) is the recommended treatment for social anxiety disorder. However, adolescents with social anxiety disorder consistently show poorer outcomes than any other anxiety disorder. The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of a disorder-specific group CBT to a generic group CBT in treating adolescents with social anxiety disorder. The disorder-specific group CBT was specifically enhanced for ado

Group dialectical behavior therapy skills training versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for adults with ADHD: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, emotion dysregulation, and executive dysfunction. Current treatment guidelines recommend a multimodal approach. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has proven effective for alleviating core symptoms, improving executive functioning, and reducing emotional comorbidities, with benefits sustained for up to one year. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), an adaptation of CBT that integrates mindfulness and emotion regulation components, has also shown

Development and application of reflexodent in the quantitative functional evaluation of chewing control in patients with temporomandibular joint dysfunction and a control group.

BACKGROUND: There has been controversy with respect to the diagnostic value of the inhibitory masseteric reflex in temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) because the whole reflex response was not considered. The purpose of this study was to characterize the reflex changes that occur in patients with different levels of TMJD and in a control group. METHODS: Eighty-nine patients (ages 31.14 +/- 12.74 years) divided into three groups were studied and compared. The control group was without TMJD (n = 30), with moderate symptoms (n = 30), and with severe symptoms (n = 29). Using an instrument

Introducing the Concept of Exercise Holidays for Human Spaceflight - What Can We Learn From the Recovery of Bed Rest Passive Control Groups.

In an attempt to counteract microgravity-induced deconditioning during spaceflight, exercise has been performed in various forms on the International Space Station (ISS). Despite significant consumption of time and resources by daily exercise, including around one third of astronauts' energy expenditure, deconditioning-to variable extents-are observed. However, in future Artemis/Lunar Gateway missions, greater constraints will mean that the current high volume and diversity of ISS in-flight exercise will be impractical. Thus, investigating both more effective and efficient multi-systems counte

Identifying risk groups of infectious spondylitis in patients with end-stage renal disease under hemodialysis: a propensity score-matched case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) under hemodialysis (HD) are at greater risks of infectious spondylitis (IS), but there is no reliable predictor that facilitate early detection of this relatively rare and insidious disease. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records from patients with ESRD under HD over a 12-year period was performed at a tertiary teaching hospital, and those with a first-time diagnosis of IS were identified. A 1:4 propensity score-matched case-control study was carried out, and baseline characteristics, underlying diseases, and laboratory
