Voluntary rewards mediate the evolution of pool punishment for maintaining public goods in large populations.

Punishment is a popular tool when governing commons in situations where free riders would otherwise take over. It is well known that sanctioning systems, such as the police and courts, are costly and thus can suffer from those who free ride on other's efforts to maintain the sanctioning systems (second-order free riders). Previous game-theory studies showed that if populations are very large, pool punishment rarely emerges in public good games, even when participation is optional, because of second-order free riders. Here we show that a matching fund for rewarding cooperation leads to the emer

[Internal attribution of outcome moderates the cortisol response to a cooperative task in women].

Several ethological reports have indicated that cooperative behaviors play an adaptive role. However, research has focused on competition in men, and there have been few studies on cooperation. This study aims to analyze the cortisol and psychological responses in women to a cooperative situation compared with a competitive situation in a laboratory context. The sample was distributed into four groups depending on the task and the outcome obtained: Positive cooperation, negative cooperation, competition with victory, and competition with defeat. Our results show that, in comparison with compet

Multicellular cooperation and the hallmarks of cancer: A new foundation.

Multicellularity evolved independently several times across the tree of life. In all cases, these events were dependent on various types of cellular cooperation. We previously identified five universal foundations of cellular cooperation that are required in all complex multicellular lineages to allow the collection of cells to function and reproduce as a whole (i.e. a multicellular individual). These include: proliferation inhibition, controlled cell death, resource allocation, division of labor, and maintenance of the extracellular environment. We propose that there is a sixth universal foun

Successful strategies in the voluntarily repeated Prisoner's Dilemma.

Reciprocity is central to explanations of cooperation among unrelated individuals in societies of humans and other animals. Most mathematical analyses of the evolution of reciprocity are based on the repeated Prisoner's Dilemma (RPD) and typically assume that new strategies are rarely introduced by mutation or analogous cultural processes, that behavioral errors are absent or infrequent, and that agents are bound to interact with the same partner. Here we analyze a version of the RPD in which new strategies are frequently tested, behavioral errors occur at a non-negligible rate, and actors may

[Effect of parent-child cooperative music therapy on children with autism spectrum disorder and their mothers: a prospective randomized controlled study].

OBJECTIVES: To study the effect of parent-child cooperative music therapy on the core symptoms of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their mothers. METHODS: In this prospective study, 112 children with ASD and their mothers were divided into a music therapy group and an applied behavior analysis (ABA) group using a random number table (n=56 each). The children in the ABA group were treated with ABA, and those in the music therapy group were given parent-child cooperative music therapy in addition to the ABA treatment. The duration of intervention was 8 weeks for both groups. Chi

Experiments investigating cooperative types in humans: a complement to evolutionary theory and simulations.

Unlike other species, humans cooperate in large, distantly related groups, a fact that has long presented a puzzle to biologists. The pathway by which adaptations for large-scale cooperation among nonkin evolved in humans remains a subject of vigorous debate. Results from theoretical analyses and agent-based simulations suggest that evolutionary dynamics need not yield homogeneous populations, but can instead generate a polymorphic population that consists of individuals who vary in their degree of cooperativeness. These results resonate with the recent increasing emphasis on the importance of

OXTR methylation modulates exogenous oxytocin effects on human brain activity during social interaction.

Oxytocin (OT) effects on brain function and behavior are mediated by the oxytocin receptor (OXTR). The distribution of OXTR in the brain can profoundly influence social behavior. Emerging evidence suggests that DNA methylation of OXTR influences OXTR expression. Previously, we conducted a pharmaco-functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) study in which healthy subjects were randomized to 24 IU intranasal OT or placebo and imaged with fMRI while playing a dyadic social interaction task known as the iterated Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) game with same-sex partners. Here, we investigate whether DN

The effects of sleep dysfunction on cognition, affect, and quality of life in individuals with cerebellar ataxia.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar ataxia comprises a group of debilitating diseases that are the result of progressive cerebellar degeneration. Recent studies suggest that, like other neurodegenerative diseases, sleep impairments are common in cerebellar ataxia. In light of the role of sleep in mood regulation and cognition, we sought to assess interactions between sleep, cognition, and affect in individuals with cerebellar ataxia. METHODS: A survey of 176 individuals with cerebellar ataxia was conducted. The battery of instruments included a modified International Cooperative Ataxia Rating Scale,

When is altruistic punishment useful in social dilemmas?

It is not fully understood how cooperation emerges in a population of individuals with no connections or prior experience with each other. Strategy selection that is purely based on accumulated payoffs promotes free riders who put their self interests above that of any group. How could cooperation persist in these settings? Researchers have posited direct or indirect reciprocity as possible explanations but these theories fail if interactions are not repeated or reputations are ignored. Altruistic punishment may provide an answer. Punishers impose a penalty, such as a fine, on defectors. The i

Escaping the tragedy of the commons via directed investments.

Cooperation is ubiquitous in the world surrounding us, from bacteria to Human interactions. In Humans, cooperation is often associated with various group decisions, resulting from their complex web of interrelated interests, associations or preferences. The existence of such social structures not only opens the opportunity of having diverse behaviors depending on the individuals' social position, but also for a dynamical allocation of contributions depending on the returns obtained from each group. Here, we address these issues by studying the evolution of cooperation under Public Goods Games

Examination of Peer Interactions During Cooperative and Competitive Board Games Among Children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder on and off Methylphenidate.

Children with ADHD have significant difficulties with social skill application (e.g., waiting turn, interpreting social cues). Behavioral treatments to promote social skills, such as the Summer Treatment Program (STP), incorporate daily social skills training with systematic opportunities to apply skills as part of peer group interactions. Recreational periods are particularly well-suited for examining these behaviors, as social skills are essential during game play. The current study examined undesirable behaviors during board games and explored underlying factors (e.g., inhibitory control, s

Transcranial direct current stimulation of the rLPFC shifts normative judgments in voluntary cooperation.

Normative judgment is a key capacity for human social norm compliance. Previous studies have revealed that the right lateral prefrontal cortex (rLPFC) is closely related to social norm compliance and that it has proven stimulation effects on behavior in voluntary and sanction-induced norm compliance, but not normative judgments. Nearly all these studies have been based on sanction-induced coordination cooperation, and a number of them have found that rLPFC has no effect on normative judgment with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). However, no research study exists regarding the ef

What is play fighting and what is it good for?

Play fighting is a common form of play reported among species of mammals, birds, and some other taxa. The competition present in play fighting revolves around gaining some advantage, such as biting a partner without being bitten. The behavior simulated during play fighting need not be restricted to that present in adult serious fighting, but can involve competitive interactions derived from amicable behavior, such as sex and social grooming, or from nonsocial competition, such as predation. What unifies play fighting, irrespective of the functional behavior being simulated, is that it involves

Rats do not eat alone in public: Food-deprived rats socialize rather than competing for baits.

Limited resources result in competition among social animals. Nevertheless, social animals also have innate preferences for cooperative behavior. In the present study, 12 dyads of food-deprived rats were tested in four successive trials, and then re-tested as eight triads of food-deprived rats that were unfamiliar to each other. We found that the food-deprived dyads or triads of rats did not compete for the food available to them at regular spatially-marked locations that they had previously learnt. Rather, these rats traveled together to collect the baits. One rat, or two rats in some triads,

The role of ring geometry and rigidity in the glassy dynamics of cyclic dimethylsila crowns under elevated pressure.

The interplay between molecular topology, rigidity, and cooperative relaxation remains central to understanding glassy dynamics in complex liquids. Here, broadband dielectric spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry were employed to investigate the relaxation behavior of cyclic dimethylsila crown ethers (DMS11C4, DMS14C5, and DMS17C6) under ambient and high-pressure conditions. The systems exhibit distinct α and β-relaxations, where the secondary (β) process displays typical Johari-Goldstein features at ambient pressure and follows nearly the same trend upon compression, showing only

Establishing Clinical Trial Priorities for Military Global Health Research.

Military leaders must support health care and research to protect the health and readiness of their forces. Part of this effort entails conducting human subjects research to address current and emerging international health threats. The military is also attentive to the national security interests associated with global health, such as protection from widespread disruption due to disasters and epidemics. While military leaders' global health research objectives relate to the military's strategic goals, including force health protection and national security, it is only through longstanding par

The power of collaboration: the untold story of World Blood Donor Day and World Patient Safety Day.

Global health days endorsed by the World Health Assembly (WHA) play a distinctive role in elevating priority issues, mobilizing political commitment, and catalyzing collective action. Among them, World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) and World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) stand out as landmark initiatives that emerged not only from technical necessity but also through sustained collaboration among Member States, WHO, and key partners including international organizations, professional bodies, civil society, and advocates. More than symbolic observances, they serve as governance instruments that confer leg

ERS/ELS/ACCP 2013 international consensus conference nomenclature on inducible laryngeal obstructions.

Individuals reporting episodes of breathing problems caused by re-occurring variable airflow obstructions in the larynx have been described in an increasing number of publications, with more than 40 different terms being used without consensus on definitions. This lack of an international consensus on nomenclature is a serious obstacle for the development of the area, as knowledge from different centres cannot be matched, pooled or readily utilised by others. Thus, an international Task Force has been created, led by the European Respiratory Society/European Laryngological Society/American Col

A decade of nutrition research in Africa: assessment of the evidence base and academic collaboration.

OBJECTIVE: Malnutrition in Africa has not improved compared with other regions in the world. Investment in the build-up of a strong African research workforce is essential to provide contextual solutions to the nutritional problems of Africa. To orientate this process, we reviewed nutrition research carried out in Africa and published during the last decade. DESIGN: We assessed nutrition research from Africa published between 2000 and 2010 from MEDLINE and EMBASE and analysed the study design and type of intervention for studies indexed with major MeSH terms for vitamin A deficiency, protein-
