Positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-deoxy-2[18F]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) was used to study 9 children who demonstrated complete or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Of the 7 patients with epilepsy, FDG-PET clearly localized areas of cortical metabolic abnormality in 6 patients; in 5 of these, localization of the metabolic abnormalities on PET corresponded to electroencephalographic localization of epileptogenicity. MRI documented focal cortical abnormalities in only 2 of the 7 children with epilepsy. In 1 patient, the abnormality observed on

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of abnormalities of the corpus callosum (AbnCC) in a non-selected population, to propose a systematic screening protocol for AbnCC in all populations through direct assessment, and to describe the follow-up and prognosis of all AbnCC cases diagnosed in our clinical setting.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of the prevalence of AbnCC over 11 years. We included a sagittal assessment of the corpus callosum (CC) in the second-trimester scan. AbnCC was classified into complete agenesis of CC (ACC) and dysgenesis of CC (DCC; including small, partial a

The corpus callosum has been associated with some of the most complex processes of cognition, including creativity and imagination. Agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a congenital disorder, affecting approximately 1:4000 persons, in which the corpus callosum fails to develop. Even when FSIQ is in the average range, ACC results in a characteristic neuropsychological syndrome of reduced interhemispheric transfer of sensory-motor information, reduced cognitive processing speed, difficulties in complex reasoning and novel problem-solving, and reduced elaborative imagination and creative capa

The corpus callosum, the largest white matter structure in the brain, plays a crucial role in interhemispheric communication and cognitive function. This review examines the microstructural changes observed in the corpus callosum across various neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). New neuroimaging studies, mainly those that use diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and advanced tractography methods, were put together to show how changes have happened in the organization of white matter and the co

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Primary agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) is a congenital neurological disorder characterized by the absence, either partial or complete, of the corpus callosum in individuals who do not have intellectual disability and are otherwise neurologically asymptomatic. While mild to moderate neurocognitive deficits have been observed in individuals with primary ACC using neuropsychological assessments, the impact of this syndrome on adaptive behavior remains insufficiently understood.
METHODS: This study used self- and informant-ratings on the Adaptive Behavior Assessment Sy

OBJECTIVES: Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) are a common magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) finding associated with various systemic diseases including COVID-19. Although an increasing number of such cases is reported in the literature, there is a lack of systematic evidence summarizing the etiology and neuroimaging findings of these lesions. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to synthesize the applied nomenclature, neuroimaging and clinical features, and differential diagnoses as well as associated disease entities of CLOCC.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comprehensive lite

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a brain malformation that can occur in isolation or in conjunction with other congenital or developmental defects. The clinical sequelae of this condition include epilepsy, cognitive deficits, developmental delay, and various neurological and psychiatric disorders. Here we present the case of a patient with congenital complete agenesis of the corpus callosum and medically refractory epilepsy who underwent stereoelectroencephalography. This identified a left frontal ictal focus and revealed that contralateral spread occurred though the anterior commissure, a r

OBJECTIVE: Anecdotal reports regarding high-functioning adults with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) suggest that they often lack psychosocial insight. We attempted to determine whether adults with AgCC are able to correctly identify appropriate behaviors within social contexts using the Social Norms Questionnaire.
METHOD: The Social Norms Questionnaire measures knowledge of norms and judgments of what is appropriate to do in particular contexts. It was administered online to individuals with AgCC and control participants.
RESULTS: Individuals with AgCC scored significantly lower in un

Dysgenesis of the corpus callosum is a rare developmental abnormality in brain structure that is associated with changes in physical appearance, as well as behavioral and cognitive consequences. A relatively commonly co-occurring structural abnormality with callosal dysgenesis is colpocephaly, characterized by enlargement of the posterior lateral ventricles and reductions in posterior brain volume. Although some case studies of individuals with this combination of structural malformations exist, they do not often report results of neuropsychological evaluation. Furthermore, those that do conta

PURPOSE: This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between callosal microbleeds and anoxic brain injury.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with anoxic brain injuries were analyzed and retrospectively compared to the control group of patients without a history of anoxic brain injury using Fisher's exact test regarding comorbidities and cerebral microbleeds. The patient group was subdivided according to the presence of callosal microbleeds. Fisher's exact test was used to compare the presence of typical MRI findings of anoxic brain injury, use of cardiopulmonary resuscita

Objective: To personally customize the antenatal ultrasound charts for the fetal corpus callosum (CC) length. Methods: A retrospective analysis of fetal neuro-sonography scans. Cases were grouped as normal neuro-sonographic evaluation (normal) or as high risk and suspected brain anomaly (abnormal). The normal group was subcategorized according to Cignini's CC length charts. Data of fetuses with a CC length between the 5th-95th percentile served for creating new charts, describing the ratio of the CC length to the major biometric parameters as a function of gestational age (GA). Results: A tota

Corpus callosum agenesis (CCA) is a clinical condition accompanied by various aneuploidy and genetic syndromes. We identified the development of the corpus callosum (CC) in 278 patients before 18 weeks of gestational age by visualising the pericallosal artery (PCA) in the callosal sulcus and changes in the lengths and ratios of the midbrain (MB) and falx (F), which suggested elevation of the third ventricle and thalamus due to CCA in the first trimester. We succeeded in visualising the path of the PCA in 273 patients. As expected, we observed an increase in the lengths of the MB and F througho

Damage to long white matter pathways in the cerebral cortex is known to affect memory capacity. However, the specific contribution of interhemispheric connectivity in memory functioning is only beginning to become understood. The present study examined verbal and visual memory processing in individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) using the Wechsler Memory Scale-Third Edition (WMS-III; Wechsler, 1997b). Thirty participants with AgCC (FSIQ >78) were compared against 30 healthy age and IQ matched controls on auditory/verbal (Logical Memory, Verbal Paired Associates) and visual (Vi

Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital malformation that can occur in isolation or in association with other neurological conditions. Although the behavioral manifestations associated with AgCC have been widely studied, the effects of complete absence of the corpus callosum (CC) on cerebral cortex anatomy are still not completely understood. In this study, cortical thickness in adults with complete AgCC was compared to a group of healthy controls. Results showed highly variable patterns of cortical thickness in AgCC individuals, with few areas showing significant and consistent

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is currently diagnosed prenatally with ultrasound and MRI. While the diagnostic aspects of callosal defects are widely addressed, anatomo-histological data from fetal autopsies are sparse. Callosal defects were present in 50 fetal autopsies. Four distinct groups of complete, partial, hypoplastic, and mixed defects were determined by the gross and histologic details of the corpus callosum. These details helped to rule out other midline defects such as holoprosencephaly. Additional autopsy findings enabled specific diagnoses and suggested etiopathogeneses. Hypopla

The corpus callosum, with its ∼200 million axons, remains enigmatic in its contribution to cognition and behaviour. Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a congenital condition in which the corpus callosum fails to develop; such individuals exhibit localized deficits in non-literal language comprehension, humour, theory of mind and social reasoning. These findings together with parent reports suggest that behavioural and cognitive impairments in subjects with callosal agenesis may overlap with the profile of autism spectrum disorders, particularly with respect to impairments in social interaction
