Are there biological markers for wear or corrosion? A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Identification of biomarkers associated with wear and tribocorrosion in joint arthroplasty would be helpful to enhance early detection of aseptic loosening and/or osteolysis and to improve understanding of disease progression. There have been several new reports since the last systematic review (which covered research through mid-2008) justifying a new assessment. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We sought to determine which biomarkers have the most promise for early diagnosis and monitoring of aseptic loosening and/or osteolysis related to wear or corrosion in total joint arthroplasty. Laparoscopic retrosternal bypass for corrosive stricture of the esophagus.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical management of corrosive stricture of the esophagus entails replacement of the scarred esophagus with a gastric or colonic conduit. This has traditionally been done using the conventional open surgical approach. We herein describe the first ever reported minimally invasive technique for performing retrosternal esophageal bypass using a stomach conduit. METHODS: Patients with corrosive stricture involving the esophagus alone with a normal stomach were selected. The surgery was performed with the patient in supine position using four abdominal ports and a transverse skin c

Thoracic inlet located corrosive oesophageal strictures.

UNLABELLED: Background Cicatricial corrosive oesophageal strictures are usually multiple and occasionally single but the thoracic inlet segment of the oesophagus being a rapid transit section is not a common site for isolated strictures. Thoracic inlet located strictures pose two major problems. First, in cases with total obstruction of the oesophagus radiological assessment even with luminal contrast fails to delineate the lower limits and real extent of the lesions. The purported single stricture in such cases becomes merely a sentinel to perhaps a coexisting rosary of strictures more distal

Therapeutic options for management of pharyngoesophageal corrosive strictures.

INTRODUCTION: Pharyngoesophageal strictures due to corrosive injury raise difficult therapeutic problems due to the site of stricture, the possible association with laryngeal injury and the presence of downstream esophageal strictures. We present here our approach to management of 51 consecutive patients with pharyngoesophageal strictures seen over a 30-year period. METHODS: Patients (51) with PES were managed by one of several options depending on the individual case, viz. dilatation alone, dilatation followed by esophagocoloplasty, dilatation after cervical esophagostomy with or without an

Post-corrosive injuries of upper gastrointestinal tract.

Acute poisonings with corrosive substances may cause serious chemical injuries to upper gastrointestinal tract, the most common location being the esophagus and the stomach. If the patient survives the acute phase of the poisoning, regenerative response may result in esophageal and/or gastric stenosis and increased risk for esophageal cancer. Acute corrosive intoxications pose a major problem in clinical toxicology since the most commonly affected population are the young with psychic disorders, suicidal intent and alcohol addiction. In establishing the diagnosis of acute corrosive poisonings,

New experimental corrosive esophagitis model in rats.

PURPOSE: Caustic esophagitis is a serious clinical problem and many agents are currently tried out in many experimental models. The model of Gehanno is the most commonly used invasive model, which is required general anesthesia and laparotomy. We aimed to form a new pratic and non-invasive model. METHODS: Twenty rats were studied. The stomachs of the rats were reached through guidance catheter with ether anesthesia, Fogarty catheter was send in through, it was filled with pressure in the stomach. Then, Fogarty was pulled back and stomach entrance was closed. Control group was given; n = 10; 0

Corrosive injury of oral cavity--a rare presentation.

Corrosive injury of the upper gastrointestinal tract has been frequently reported in medical literature. The ingestion of acid or alkali may be accidental or intentional. The spectrum of injury varies from involving the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum either individually or together. The oral cavity is rarely involved. The sequelae of oral cavity caustic injury that have been reported include microstomia, shallow vestibule, ankyloglossia, speech impairment, loss of teeth and impairment of facial expression. We report a case of corrosive injury of the oral cavity following accidental ingestio

Management of corrosive esophageal burns in 149 cases.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to present our experience in the management of esophageal burns. METHODS: From April 1976 through October 2003, 149 patients with corrosive esophageal burns were included in this study. Treatment modalities consisted of modified intraluminal stenting in 28, colon interposition in 71, gastric transposition in 25, repair of cervical stricture with platysma myocutaneous flap in 17, and miscellaneous operations in 12 patients. Eleven of these patients underwent the above procedures twice at our institute. The remaining 7 patients were treated with conservative therapy. RESU

Corrosive oesophagitis in Nigeria: clinical spectrums and implications.

Ingested corrosive agents produce oropharyngeal and gastro-oesophageal injuries ranging from minor burns to severe necrosis, depending on the agent, amount, concentration and duration of exposure. A 10-year (1990-1999) study of 23 corrosive oesophagitis patients depicting the clinical spectrums and implications was done. There were 17 (74%) males and 6 (26%) females, with an average age of 16 years: 35% were in the first decade of life and 39% in the second, with an average occurrence of three new cases a year. The main corrosive agents were alkali (NaOH) 48% and sulphuric acid 39%. The factor

Corrosive oesophageal injury following vinegar ingestion.

A 39-year-old woman drank one tablespoon of white vinegar in order to 'soften' crab shell stuck in her throat. Endoscopy revealed inflammation of the oropharynx and second-degree caustic injury of the oesophagus extending to the cardia. She had an uneventful recovery. This case report confirmed that vinegar could cause ulcerative injury to the oropharynx and oesophagus. The folklore application of vinegar 'dislodging' a foreign body in the throat should be strongly discouraged.

[Self-poisonings of the addicted persons with corrosive substances].

In this paper we present two cases of suicidal behaviour; case (1)--patient dependent to medicines and case (2)--patient co-dependent, related with alcohol addicted person. Both of them combine suicidal corrosive substances consumption, but differ clinical course, finished by recover of addicted person and death of co-dependent person. In this paper we also present chemical burns of gastrointestinal tract algorithm procedure.

Transhiatal esophagectomy in children with corrosive esophageal stricture.

Ten children with corrosive esophageal strictures were referred for esophageal replacement. The children whose ages ranged between 2 and 6 years (mean 4.1 +/- 1.4 years) had transhiatal esophagectomy (THE) and immediate posterior mediastinal transposition of their isoperistaltic stomach and cervical esophagogastrostomy. No patient had a gastric drainage procedure. All patients had nasogastric tube and a cervical perianastomotic drain until full oral intake resumed. Anastomotic leakages were managed by trans-oral irrigation (TOI) and postoperative feeding was through jejunostomy. Postoperative

Corrosive oesophageal injury. A study of four cases.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The ingestion of a corrosive agent including strong alkaline material causes serious caustic damage to the upper gastrointestinal tract. We describe four cases in patients who had ingested alkaline substances. MATERIAL AND METHODS: During the years 1992-1996, four patients who had ingested strong alkali were treated in the Oulu University Hospital. The patients were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: In one case a third-degree, in two cases a second-degree and in one case a first-degree injury developed in the oesophagus. The patient with first-degree injury was treated

The sealing of the tooth/amalgam interface by corrosion products.

A marginal gap exists between the amalgam restoration and the cavity walls. At this interface, there is a constant percolation of fluid containing ions, molecules and bacteria. With time, corrosion products of the amalgam components seal the gap at the amalgam/tooth interface. The corrosion processes for conventional and high copper amalgam and factors affecting the corrosion deposits are reviewed. Better amalgam adaptation to the cavity walls improves the chances of sealing the restoration by corrosion products. The effectiveness of cavity varnish in preventing microleakage until corrosive de

Mid-colon oesophagocoloplasty for corrosive oesophageal strictures.

Corrosive strictures of the oesophagus are common and being long and dense frequently require surgical replacement of the oesophagus. Presently available techniques of oesophagocoloplasty are associated with a significant mortality and major morbidity, such as a high rate of ischaemic necrosis of the colon, cervical salivary fistula or oesophagocolic stenosis. A method of mid-colon oesophagocoloplasty using an isoperistaltic colonic segment from the mid-ascending to the mid-descending colon is reported. The procedure was carried out in 33 patients. The conduit was placed retrosternally in 27 p
