Detection of Corynebacterium kutscheri from the oral cavity of rats.

A simple and useful method for the detection of C. kutscheri from the oral cavity of living rats was devised. In 10 sacrificed rats from two naturally and subclinically infected conventional colonies, 10(4.28) or 10(3.84) CFU/ml C. kutscheri were isolated from upper incisor swab extractions, while 10(1.38) or 10(1.58) and < 10 or 10(1.56) CFU/ml from the upper soft palate and pharynx, respectively. In another survey with 26 living animals, which were reared on the same rack, organisms were detected from the upper incisor and gingival swabs in 15 of 26 rats (57.7%). The results were reproducibl

[Adaptation mechanisms in the formation of the Corynebacterium diphtheriae carrier state].

The complex clinico-laboratory examination of 92 children aged 3-14 years with the localized form of stomatopharyngeal diphtheria and toxigenic C. diphtheriae (TCD) carrier state was carried out. The children were hospitalized in the clinic of drop infections during the period of 1996-1998. The hydrophobic properties, adhesive, lysozyme, antilysozyme and DNAase activities of 92 TCD strains, as well as the levels of the specific and nonspecific immunity of the macroorganism, were studied. The study revealed that the character of the infectious process in TCD carrier state was determined by the

The return of Corynebacterium diphtheriae: the rise of non-toxigenic strains.

With the decline in incidence of diphtheria in Europe and the USA, many laboratories no longer routinely culture throat swabs for Corynebacterium diphtheriae. However, there is an outbreak of infection with toxigenic strains in Russia and most adults do not have protective levels of antibody. Non-toxigenic strains are known to cause local disease and lysogenic conversion probably occurs in vivo as well as in vitro. Non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae var. gravis, formerly quite rare, has been isolated with increasing frequency in the UK over the last five years. During prospective screening at one Se

[Corynebacterium D2 as a ureolytic organism: report of 5 cases].

Corynebacterium D2, a saprophytic microorganism of skin, causes alkaline encrusted cystitis in patients with a previous bladder injury. In 5 patients that had presented this nosological entity, these gram-positive rods were isolated in urine cultures and calculi. Four patients had undergone urological instrumentation maneuvers and one patient (female) had a history of recurrent cystitis from gram-negative bacteria. Corynebacterium D2 grows slowly and under certain conditions, as those described above, must be considered pathological despite counts of less than 100,000/ufc-cc. It is ureolytic a

Deep Spinal Infection Caused by Corynebacterium simulans: A Case Report.

Corynebacterium simulans is a commensal coryneform bacterium that commonly colonizes human skin and mucosal surfaces. Owing to limitations in conventional microbiological identification, it is often regarded as a contaminant, and clinically significant deep-seated infections caused by this organism are rarely reported. Here, we describe a case of lumbar infectious spondylitis caused by C. simulans in a 62-year-old male farmer who presented with a 2-month history of persistent low back pain accompanied by pain in both lower limbs. The patient had several potential predisposing factors including

Effects of lipid-lowering drug on vancomycin-sensitive Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii.

BACKGROUND: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a rare inflammatory breast disease primarily affecting reproductive-aged women with a history of breastfeeding. Within GM lesions, Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii has frequently been isolated, suggesting it may play a significant role in the development of GM. It is important to develop the novel therapeutic regimen to fight against the Corynebacterium kroppenstedtii infection. RESULTS: In our study, the combination of vancomycin and the lipid-lowering drug Tetrahydrolipstatin (THL) exhibited a synergistic effect against bacteria. Proteomic analysis r

Severe Respiratory Diphtheria-Like Illness Caused by Toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans.

We report a possible zoonotic case of severe diphtheria-like respiratory illness in Norway caused by a previously unreported toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans sequence type. This case highlights C. ulcerans as an emerging pathogen that can cause life-threatening disease. Clinicians should be aware of C. ulcerans infection, even in regions where diphtheria is rare.

Corynebacterium striatum drives neutrophilic asthma via IL-17 signaling activation.

Corynebacterium striatum has recently been recognized as an emerging multidrug-resistant pathogen capable of causing both nosocomial and community-acquired infections, particularly in immunocompromised individuals and those with chronic conditions. However, direct evidence regarding the pathogenicity of C. striatum and its association with neutrophilic asthma remains poorly understood. In this study, a BALB/c mouse model infected with C. striatum was established at first to investigate its potential role in acute lung injury. The results demonstrated that C. striatum infection induced signific

Fatal Respiratory Diphtheria Caused by ß-Lactam-Resistant Corynebacterium diphtheriae.

BACKGROUND: Diphtheria is a potentially fatal respiratory disease caused by toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae. Although resistance to erythromycin has been recognized, β-lactam resistance in toxigenic diphtheria has not been described. Here, we report a case of fatal respiratory diphtheria caused by toxigenic C. diphtheriae resistant to penicillin and all other β-lactam antibiotics, and describe a novel mechanism of inducible carbapenem resistance associated with the acquisition of a mobile resistance element. METHODS: Long-read whole-genome sequencing was performed using Pacific Bioscien

Genomic analyses reveal two distinct lineages of Corynebacterium ulcerans strains.

Corynebacteriumulcerans is an important zoonotic pathogen which is causing diphtheria-like disease in humans globally. In this study, the genomes of three recently isolated C. ulcerans strains, 4940, 2590 and BR-AD 2649, respectively from an asymptomatic carrier, a patient with pharyngitis and a canine host, were sequenced to investigate their virulence potential. A comparative analysis was performed including the published genome sequences of 16 other C. ulcerans isolates. C. ulcerans strains belong to two lineages; 13 strains are grouped together in lineage 1, and six strains comprise lineag

Antimicrobial Resistance in Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., and Trueperella pyogenes.

There is currently only limited information on the antimicrobial susceptibility and resistance of Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., and Trueperella pyogenes from animals. The comparability of the data is hampered by the use of different antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and interpretive criteria. To date, standard broth microdilution methods and clinical breakpoints that are approved by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute and are applicable to Corynebacterium spp., Arcanobacterium spp., and T. pyogenes are available. The lack of species-specific clinical breakp

Sequence Analysis of Toxin Gene-Bearing Corynebacterium diphtheriae Strains, Australia.

By conducting a molecular characterization of Corynebacterium diphtheriae strains in Australia, we identified novel sequences, nonfunctional toxin genes, and 5 recent cases of toxigenic cutaneous diphtheria. These findings highlight the importance of extrapharyngeal infections for toxin gene-bearing (functional or not) and non-toxin gene-bearing C. diphtheriae strains. Continued surveillance is recommended.

Antimicrobial Treatment Options for Granulomatous Mastitis Caused by Corynebacterium Species.

Corynebacterium species are increasingly recognized as important pathogens in granulomatous mastitis. Currently, there are no published treatment protocols for Corynebacterium breast infections. This study describes antimicrobial treatment options in the context of other management strategies used for granulomatous mastitis. Corynebacterium spp. isolated from breast tissue and aspirate samples stored from 2002 to 2013 were identified and determined to the species level using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS), 16S RNA sequencing, and rpo
