Structural investigations of the normal ostrich head using anatomical sections, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: The significance of the ostrich (Struthio camelus) has increased recently due to the growth of the global ostrich farming industry. Morphological and diagnostic imaging of the ostrich head presents challenges for enhancing clinical treatment and veterinary care, particularly concerning surgical disorders in the head and paranasal sinuses. AIM: This study aims to guide veterinarians in improving the accuracy of clinical diagnoses and treatment for upper respiratory tract and cranial conditions, particularly in surgical cases involving the head and paranasal sinuses. METHODS: Ten h

Clinical Significance of Venous Anomalies in Syndromic Craniosynostosis.

BACKGROUND: The pattern of cranial venous drainage in syndromic craniosynostosis is unpredictable and not adequately understood. Collateral channels substitute for stenotic venous sinuses and pose potential risk for surgical intervention. The purpose of this study was to analyze the patterns of venous drainage in patients with syndromic craniosynostosis and their influence on operative planning and morbidity. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients with syndromic craniosynostosis from 2000 to 2013 was performed. Demographic data were collected including phenotype and associated pathologies

Pott's puffy tumor and epidural abscess arising from dental sepsis: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: To present an unusual case of two uncommon cranial complications of frontal sinusitis: Pott's puffy tumor and epidural abscess arising from frontal sinusitis of dental origin, and also two systemic complications of sinusitis: septicemia and empyema, all occurring in an immunocompetent patient. STUDY DESIGN: A 21-year-old man presented with a scalp swelling and epidural abscess. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomographic scans revealed unilateral opacification of the frontal sinus and an epidural abscess with a direct connection to the scalp abscess. Further history reveale

The Helmet-Visor Pericranial Flap as a Viable Option for Anterior Cranial Base Reconstruction in Complex Oncologic Cases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel bilaterally pedicled pericranial flap for anterior cranial base reconstruction after removal of complex frontobasal cancers extending to the frontal region, thus precluding the use of standard reconstructive techniques. METHODS: In selected oncologic cranial base surgeries, the use of the standard galea frontalis pericranial flap for reconstructive purposes may be precluded by tumor infiltration. In such cases, dura mater reconstruction and exclusion of frontal sinuses from the intracranial space can be performed using a large superficial temporal artery bilater

[Meningoencephalocele as rhinosurgical problem].

Cephalocele is a rare lesion mainly of congenital or traumatic origin. The lesion occurs as an extracranial hernia of dura mater that consists of cerebrospinal fluid only (meningocele) or cerebellar tissue (encephalocele). Some cephaloceles concern anterior cranial fossa and then are observed as hernias in nasal cavity or in paranasal sinuses. Three patients are presented. In 52 year woman, who was admitted due to idiopathic rhinorrhea (persisting 16 years) with periodical headache, the meningocele in right ethmoid sinus was diagnosed. The lesion was removed with the rhinosurgical approach and

Paraganglioma of the sphenoid sinus appearing as labile hypertension.

Paragangliomas, also known as glomus tumors, are unusual, generally benign tumors most commonly found in association with major vessels and cranial nerves. Only a small number of these tumors have been described arising in the paranasal sinuses, and none of these has been physiologically active. The following case report describes a metabolically active paraganglioma arising in the sphenoid sinus.

A Stepwise Progression of Acute Bilateral Visual Loss Due to Onodi Cell Sinusitis.

Acute visual loss in an immunocompromised patient may be caused by acute invasive fungal sinusitis (AIFS), even if symptoms include only mild headache and computed tomography (CT) shows only mild sinusitis, especially of the Onodi cell. Herein, we report a case of a 71-year-old man with a medical history of dermatomyositis and type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with a stepwise progression of acute bilateral visual loss, mild headache, and altered consciousness. Initially, as the plain cranial CT showed only mild fluid retention in the posterior ethmoid sinus without bone destruction, the s

Monostotic fronto-orbital fibrous dysplasia with convulsion--case report.

A 28-year-old man presented with monostotic fronto-orbital fibrous dysplasia associated with convulsions. Signs of meningeal irritation were observed. Computed tomography (CT) showed right frontal sinusitis, and destruction from the inner to outer table with expansion of the diploic space. T1- and T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed an abnormal low-intensity mass, with heterogeneous gadolinium enhancement. Although the meningitis resolved, signs of infection continued for 2 months due to sinusitis. Treatment of the right frontal sinusitis was undertaken, accompanied by open biopsy. T

Sinus Pericranii: a case report and review of literature.

Normally, there is no obvious communication between the intracranial and extra cranial venous drainages in the head. In Sinus Pericranii, there is an abnormal communication, either from the extra cranial system to the intracranial venous sinuses or from the intracranial venous system to the extra cranial draining veins. Venous anomaly is a collection of non muscular venous blood vessels, adhering tightly to the outer surface of the skull and directly communicating with an intracranial venous sinus through diploic veins. The varicosities are intimately associated with the periostium, are disten

Hypopituitarism and cranial nerve involvement mimicking Tolosa-Hunt syndrome as the initially presenting feature of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of lymphoma involving the central nervous system is sometimes difficult but emergent to avoid the delay of therapeutic initiation. Pituitary insufficiencies are usually associated with lymphoma in the pituitary gland. There have been no cases of lymphoma originating from extra pituitary gland with hypopituitarism that simultaneously presenting unilateral upper cranial nerve palsies and ophthalmalgia. These symptoms are mostly caused by neoplastic involvement of the skull base or benign diseases such as Tolosa-Hunt syndrome (THS). We report a case of lymphoma with un

Arachnoid cysts and pneumosinus dilatans.

The association of intracranial arachnoid cysts and pneumosinus dilatans is considered to be relatively rare, and has previously been described in only a limited number of cases. In this study the CT and/or MRI examinations of a total of 30 cases with middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts were retrospectively evaluated in an attempt to note any association with pneumosinus dilatans of the paranasal sinuses. In four patients with surgically treated, large, middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts, obvious paranasal sinus changes, consistent with pneumosinus dilatans, were noted. The frequency of the

Restricted diffusion in the superior ophthalmic vein and cavernous sinus in a case of cavernous sinus thrombosis.

A previously healthy 14-year-old boy developed headache, stiff neck, fever, diplopia, right proptosis, and right complete sixth and partial third cranial nerve palsies. Orbital CT showed features of pansinusitis and orbital fat stranding. An initial diagnosis of orbital cellulitis was made. However, closer inspection of the CT disclosed nonfilling of the right superior ophthalmic vein (SOV) and both cavernous sinuses, suggesting cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST). CT venography (CTV) confirmed these features and disclosed nonobstructing thrombus within the left sigmoid sinus and proximal segment

Intracranial aspergilloma mimicking metachronous meningioma following transsphenoidal removal of a tuberculum sellae meningioma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (eTSS) is a well-established approach for resection of skull-based pathologies such as tuberculum sellae meningiomas; however, central nervous system (CNS) fungal infection is a potential complication, particularly in a patient with concomitant sinusitis. OBSERVATIONS: A 58-year-old woman with a tuberculum sellae meningioma causing progressive visual disturbance and concurrent asymptomatic chronic maxillary sinusitis underwent eTSS. Six months later, a de novo dura-based mass with peripheral edema, which was assumed to be an aggressive metachrono

[Recurrent bacterial meningitis in a case of Crouzon syndrome after craniofacial surgery].

A 29-year-old woman, who was diagnosed as Crouzon syndrome for which two cranio-facial surgeries had been performed as a child and at the age of 19, developed high fever, headache, and confusion for two days. She was admitted to our hospital. She was diagnosed as bacterial meningitis by cerebrospinal fluid examinations, and her condition was immediately improved by antibiotics. At the age of 23, she also suffered from bacterial meningitis caused by otitis media and sinusitis, and recovered by antibiotics with no sequela. Her cranial computed tomography showed sphenoid and ethmoid sinusitis, an

[Dynamics of caudal dystopia of cerebellar tonsils in patients with craniosynostosis following posterior cranial distraction].

UNLABELLED: The main cause of caudal dystopia of cerebellar tonsils (CDCT) in craniosynostosis (CS) is underdevelopment of posterior cranial fossa (PCF) with its insufficient volume. Therefore, posterior cranial distraction seems to be perspective for effective enlargement of intracranial volume. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate CDCT dynamics in patients with CS after posterior cranial distraction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 136 patients with CS who underwent posterior cranial distraction between 2011 and 2022. Of these, 32 ones were included in this study. These patients were diagnosed with CDC

Paranasal Sinus Wall Erosion and Expansion in Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis: An Image Scoring System.

Background Bone erosions are common in allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS). This study aimed at developing an image-based grading and scoring system for paranasal sinus (PNS) wall erosion in AFRS. Methods A retrospective review of all confirmed AFRS cases based on the Bent and Kuhn criteria was conducted. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) images were studied to detect PNS wall erosion with expansion. Based on our observation, we described a grading system based on the proportion of PNS wall erosion, with 1 if less thanone-third, 2 if between one-third and two-thirds, and 3 if more than t
