Creative ideation activates disinhibited reward-seeking and indulgent choices.

Given that creative ideation has been widely characterized as involving disinhibition, we tested whether a brief creative ideation effort increased subsequent indulgence through the choice of real or imagined rewards. Across 10 experiments (and an additional four in the Supplemental Material) and 3,412 participants (including the ones in the Supplemental Material), we show that a short creative ideation (vs. control) task led to more indulgent eating, drinking, and exercise choices and behaviors. Participants who generated creative ideas subsequently assembled burgers with higher calorie conte

The Impact of a Creativity Camp Intervention on Depression and Well-Being in Adolescents.

Depression is a serious public health problem that often emerges during adolescence. Many adolescents do not respond to standard treatments, necessitating the development of novel interventions. We conducted a preliminary study to assess the impact of a novel creative arts intervention on depression and well-being in adolescents. In this quasi-experimental study, 69 adolescents 12-17 years completed an 8-day "Creativity Camp" intervention encompassing multiple creative activities. Self-report questionnaires to measure depression, anxiety, and well-being were administered at five time points to

Creative IDEA: Introducing a Statewide Art Therapy in Prisons Program.

Education is regarded as an avenue for success while the under-educated are disproportionately more likely to be incarcerated and remain within the correctional system. Current prison reforms have focused on increasing access to educational programming. However, these programs are not designed to address the lack of control, poor self-regulation, low emotional intelligence, inadequate social skills, or lack of internal motivation that hinder progress. Art therapy has been found effective in mitigating these impediments. Recognizing this, a partnership arose between a state Department of Correc

Twelve tips to stimulate creative problem-solving with design thinking.

Design thinking is increasingly applied in healthcare and health professions education to generate innovative solutions to difficult problems. The design thinking framework helps individuals approach problems with a user-centered focus; the emphasis is on understanding the user experience, their challenges, and possible design solutions that are aligned with their needs. In this twelve tips paper, we describe strategies that health professions educators can use to prepare for, conduct, and support design thinking. These strategies may also be useful to learners, practitioners, and organization

Enhancing creative cognition with a rapid right-parietal neurofeedback procedure.

The present article describes an innovative neurofeedback training (NFT) procedure aimed at increasing creative cognition through the enhancement of specific brain activities previously associated with divergent thinking. We designed and tested two NFT protocols based on training alpha and beta EEG oscillations selectively measured over the right parietal region. A total of 80 participants were involved, 40 in the alpha NFT protocol and 40 in the beta NFT protocol. The NFT loop was closed on a video stream that would advance only when oscillation power exceeded a normalized threshold. The tota

[Role of the body image in creativity--a group of objects as an attempt for contextualization].

The Psychiatric Institutes have supported the different forms of self-expression from the very beginning, sometimes realizing therapeutic goals as well. Under this point theatrical phenomenon was held too. Physicians often created such scenic actions themselves. The visual, pictorial expressions have begun to be shown parallel to the representation of such scenic world. That was the context to create a number of psychiatric art collections. By this kind of theatre based on esthetical judgment visual creations have been shown to the greater public promoting the representation of integral, intac

Mania risk and creativity: a multi-method study of the role of motivation.

BACKGROUND: Substantial literature has linked bipolar disorder and risk for bipolar disorder with creative accomplishment, but few multimodal studies of creativity are available, and little is known about mechanisms. METHODS: We use a multi-method approach to test the association of bipolar risk with several creativity measures, including creative accomplishments, creative personality traits, and a laboratory index of insight. We also examined whether multiple facets of motivation accounted for the links of bipolar risk with creativity. Among 297 undergraduates, mania risk, as measured with t

A creative therapy in treating cavernous hemangioma of penis with copper wire.

INTRODUCTION: Cavernous hemangiomas of penis are rare benign lesions infrequently described in the literature. No completely satisfactory treatment has been found to correct the cosmetic deformities especially the extensive hemangiomas of corpus penis. AIM: In light of the promising application of copper wire/needle in vascular malformations, we began a clinical study to investigate the safety, feasibility, and cosmetic effect of copper wire therapy in treating cavernous hemangioma of penis. METHODS: Seven patients ranging in age from 12 to 32 years with penile cavernous hemangiomas entered

Uncorking the muse: alcohol intoxication facilitates creative problem solving.

That alcohol provides a benefit to creative processes has long been assumed by popular culture, but to date has not been tested. The current experiment tested the effects of moderate alcohol intoxication on a common creative problem solving task, the Remote Associates Test (RAT). Individuals were brought to a blood alcohol content of approximately .075, and, after reaching peak intoxication, completed a battery of RAT items. Intoxicated individuals solved more RAT items, in less time, and were more likely to perceive their solutions as the result of a sudden insight. Results are interpreted fr

Traversing the ovine cervix - a challenge for cryopreserved semen and creative science.

This review brings together research findings on cervical relaxation in the ewe and its pharmacological stimulation for enhancement of the penetration needed for transcervical insemination and embryo transfer. On the basis that the success of artificial insemination is the percentage of ewes lambing, a review is made of recent research aimed at understanding and minimising the sub-lethal effects of freezing and thawing on the viability of spermatozoa, their membrane integrity and their ability to migrate through cervical mucus, as these characteristics have a major influence on fertility, part

Drive-by readings: a creative strategy for tuberculosis control among immigrants.

OBJECTIVES: We explored an innovative strategy for targeted testing and disease management among immigrant communities at risk for tuberculosis. METHODS: Taxi drivers were recruited at an airport holding lot to undergo tuberculin skin testing (Mantoux). After receiving their test results in a location convenient for them, drivers with positive results were referred for evaluation and treatment. We conducted baseline and follow-up assessments. RESULTS: Of 123 drivers who participated, two thirds (82) were at high risk for tuberculosis. Seventy-eight (63%) of the 123 returned for test readings

Creative arterial bypass grafting can be performed on the beating heart.

BACKGROUND: To demonstrate that compromise is unnecessary in either the design or performance of beating heart surgery, we report our experience, over 1 year, of total arterial revascularization where composite or creative grafting was utilized. METHODS: We performed 321 off-pump coronary artery bypass operations, of which, 290 (90%) were done with only arterial conduits. The mean number of distal anastomoses was 2.48, with a range of 1 to 5. There were no aortic anastomoses. One hundred eighty-nine patients (65%) were male, and 101 (35%) were female, with a mean age of 67 years. Comorbiditie

Polydipsia and hyponatremia in psychiatric patients: challenge to creative nursing care.

Among patients with psychiatric disorders, especially schizophrenia, a pattern of extreme polydipsia and polyuria sometimes emerges, usually without readily identifiable medical causes. Hyponatremia may develop and progress to water intoxication, with symptoms including restlessness, confusion, seizures, or even death. We review the clinical features and pathophysiology of this syndrome and discuss nursing roles in identifying and managing patients with polydipsia and hyponatremia. While the causes of polydipsia and hyponatremia are unclear, relevant factors seem to include a possible dysfunct

A preliminary study of the personality of the nightmare sufferer: relationship to schizophrenia and creativity?

Through psychiatric interviews and psychological tests the authors studied 38 adults who reported experiencing at least one nightmare per week. Nearly all of the subjects had a lifelong history of frequent nightmares. Four of the subjects met DSM-III criteria for schizophrenia, 9 met the criteria for borderline personality, and 6 met the criteria for schizotypal personality. The others had no specific diagnosis, and none of the subjects had a diagnosis of typical neurosis. Many had mentally ill relatives. Most had artistic interests and talents. These nightmare sufferers may be seen as unusual

How contemporary academic structures constrain scientific creativity and hold back early-career researchers.

We argue that contemporary scientific systems progressively constrain high-risk and conceptually innovative research while being increasingly structured around short funding cycles, productivity-based evaluation criteria and risk-averse frameworks that favour predictable and non-transformative research outputs. Drawing on recent empirical literature, we show how such systems can place disproportionate pressure on early-career researchers by incentivizing safe, tractable and easily evaluated outputs. Structural academic mechanisms such as peer review and funding, escalating publication costs an

Brain White Matter Correlates of Creativity in Schizophrenia: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study.

The relationship between creativity and psychopathology has been a controversial research topic for decades. Specifically, it has been shown that people with schizophrenia have an impairment in creative performance. However, little is known about the brain correlates underlying this impairment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze whole brain white matter (WM) correlates of several creativity dimensions in people with schizophrenia. Fifty-five patients with schizophrenia underwent diffusion-weighted imaging on a 3T magnetic resonance imaging machine as well as a clinical and a creat

Flexible reconfiguration of functional brain networks as a potential neural mechanism of creativity.

Creativity relies on the reorganizing of multimodal information and flexible switching between different modes of thinking, suggesting an association between creativity and the reconfiguration of functional brain networks. Here, we investigated global and regional brain dynamics in high-creative (HCG, N = 22) and a low-creative (LCG, N = 20) groups during a divergent creative thinking task. We found that during the creative thinking task, the HCG demonstrated higher global network flexibility, as compared to the LCG. In addition, creative thinking in the HCG was associated with significantly h

The Association Between Schizophrenia Risk Variants and Creativity in Healthy Han Chinese Subjects.

Although previous evidence has suggested that there is a genetic link between schizophrenia and creativity, the specific genetic variants that underlie the link are still largely unknown. To further explore the potential genetic link between schizophrenia and creativity, in a sample of 580 healthy Han Chinese subjects, this study aimed to (1) validate the role of Neuregulin 1 (NRG1) rs6994992 (one schizophrenia risk variant that has been previously linked to creativity in the European population) in the relationship between schizophrenia and creativity and (2) explore the associations between
