Open Versus Closed Group Treatment of Men with a History of Sexual Offenses.

Treatment programs for people with histories of sexual violence form a critical part of criminal justice service rehabilitation. Completion of these programs is often a precondition of release. Meta-analytic reviews suggest moderate benefit is associated with treatment completion, although effect sizes vary. This study examined whether commencement of open versus closed group programs was associated with treatment completion and recidivism. Participants were 426 adult men who commenced treatment between April 1, 2014, and December 31, 2017. Participants were followed-up until June 30, 2018. Pr

Self-reported sexually-transmitted infections and criminal justice involvement among women who use drugs.

BACKGROUND: Women involved in the criminal justice system in the United States have high rates of sexually transmitted infections (STI). It is unknown whether criminal justice involvement is a marker for other risk behavior, such as sex exchange or drug use, or criminal justice involvement itself increases risk directly. METHODS: This study examines the relationship between STI and the frequency and duration of arrest, probation, and incarceration in a sample of women who use drugs (n = 394) in Oakland, California who reported having been tested for STI in the past six months. Logistic regres

Type and timing of maltreatment influence criminal persistence in sexually abusive adolescents.

The development of sexuality is a major goal in the normative course of puberty. However, some adolescents start and maintain sexually coercive behaviors. Maltreatment appears as a contributing factor in juvenile criminal persistence, although its role regarding reoffenses in juveniles convicted of sexual offenses (JSOs) is unclear. We examined time-dependent associations of maltreatment categories and subtypes with criminal persistence in JSOs. Files of 278 male JSOs (M = 14.64 years, SD = 1.58 years) were analyzed for experiences of emotional abuse, physical abuse, sexual victimization, emot

From Bacillus Criminalis to the Legalome: Will Neuromicrobiology Impact 21st Century Criminal Justice?

The idea that gut microbes or a "bacillus of crime" might promote criminal behavior was popularized in the early 20th century. Today, advances in neuromicrobiology and related omics technologies are lending credibility to the idea. In recent cases of dismissal of driving while intoxicated charges, courts in the United States and Europe have acknowledged that gut microbes can manufacture significant amounts of systemically available ethanol, without a defendant's awareness. Indeed, emergent research is raising difficult questions for criminal justice systems that depend on prescientific notions

Writing Abilities in Compulsive Prisoners.

Research has found links between academic failure and criminal offending and suggest that many incarcerated young people have experienced significant behavioral and learning problems in school, which could result in criminal outcomes and poor academic performance. The objective of this study was to analyse writing disorders in impulsive and compulsive prisoners. The sample was composed of 194 male prisoners, of which 81 had been diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder and 113 with Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. Male participants were recruited at the Granada Prison Center. T

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Childhood and Criminal Justice Involvement in Young Adulthood: A Prospective U.S. Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are overrepresented in the criminal justice system, and children and youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are at increased risk of engaging in rule-breaking and delinquent behaviors. This study investigated associations between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in childhood and criminal justice involvement in adolescence and young adulthood. METHODS: Data were from the Future of Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a longitudinal U.S. population-based birth cohort study (N=2,733) that randomly sampled

Revising the paradigm for jail diversion for people with mental and substance use disorders: Intercept 0.

A conceptual model for community-based strategic planning to address the criminalization of adults with mental and substance use disorders, the Sequential Intercept Model has provided jurisdictions with a framework that overcomes traditional boundaries between the agencies within the criminal justice and behavioral health systems. This article presents a new paradigm, Intercept 0, for expanding the utility of the Sequential Intercept Model at the front end of the criminal justice system. Intercept 0 encompasses the early intervention points for people with mental and substance use disorders be

Early childhood predictors of boys' antisocial and violent behavior in early adulthood.

Research on early childhood predictors of violent behaviors in early adulthood is limited. The current study investigated whether individual, family, and community risk factors from 18 to 42 months of age were predictive of violent criminal arrests during late adolescence and early adulthood using a sample of 310 low-income male participants living in an urban community. In addition, differences in trajectories of overt conduct problems (CP), hyperactivity/attention problems (HAP), and co-occurring patterns of CP and HAP from age 1½ to 10 years were investigated in regard to their relationship

Commentary: substance abuse and criminality in the mentally disordered defendant.

This commentary discusses the main findings of the research study by Friedman et al. entitled, "Gender Differences in Criminality: Bipolar Disorder with Co-occurring Substance Abuse." Moreover, it shows that the role of substance use should be determined in studies that assess outcomes among co-occurring disorders, such as bipolar disorder and criminal behavior. High rates of substance-related problems were recorded in the study by Friedman et al. Fifty-six percent of the patients with dual-diagnosis, rapid-cycling bipolar disorder had been charged with drug- or alcohol-related offenses. Signi

Are Sex Drive and Hypersexuality Associated with Pedophilic Interest and Child Sexual Abuse in a Male Community Sample?

Although much is currently known about hypersexuality (in the form of excessive sexual behavior) among sexual offenders, the degree to which hypersexual behavior is linked to paraphilic and especially pedophilic interests in non-forensic populations has not been established. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the associations between total sexual outlets(TSO) and other sex drive indicators, antisocial behavior, pedophilic interests, and sexual offending behavior in a large population-based community sample of males. The sample included 8,718 German men who participated in an onli

Symptoms of ADHD, antisocial behavior, and cognitive performance: A longitudinal twin study.

We investigated longitudinal associations between adolescent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and later antisocial behavior and tested 1) whether these associations are independent of familial factors shared by co-twins and 2) whether cognitive performance moderates the associations. In a population-based sample of Finnish twins (N = 602-1330, 53% female), we assessed ADHD symptoms with teacher assessments and a diagnostic interview in adolescence, symptoms of antisocial personality disorder with a diagnostic interview in young adulthood, and criminal behavior across th

Beauty is only skin deep: An examination of physical attractiveness, attractive personality, and personal grooming on criminal justice outcomes.

Research has found that physical attractiveness is related to a host of benefits across life outcomes. Within the field of criminal justice, physical attractiveness appears to afford individuals leniency at various decision points. This research, however, often fails to include measures of personal presentation beyond simply measuring physical attractiveness. The current study extends this line of research by investigating how physical attractiveness, personality attractiveness, and grooming are related to criminal justice processing decisions. Results from negative binomial and logistic regre

Neurocognitive deficits related to poor decision making in people behind bars.

Using a novel quantitative model of repeated choice behavior, we investigated the cognitive processes of criminal offenders incarcerated for various crimes. Eighty-one criminals, including violent offenders, drug and sex offenders, drivers operating a vehicle while impaired, and 18 matched controls were tested. The results were also contrasted with those obtained from neurological patients with focal brain lesions in the orbitofrontal cortex and from drug abusers. Participants performed the computerized version of the Iowa gambling task (Bechara, Damasio, Damasio, & Anderson, 1994), and the re

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and the risk of crime.

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are an important preventable global health concern. FASD is an umbrella term describing a range of mild to severe cognitive and behavioral problems among individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. Alcohol causes FASD by interfering with molecular pathways during fetal development involving increased oxidative stress, disturbed organ development, and change of epigenetic gene expression control. Neuroimaging studies into FASD show several neuropathological abnormalities including abnormal brain structure, cortical development, white matter microstructure,

Firesetting, arson, pyromania, and the forensic mental health expert.

Firesetting is a common behavior that is frequently encountered by forensic mental health experts when consulting on criminal and civil legal cases. Despite its prevalence, minimal attention has been paid in the literature to conducting firesetting-related forensic evaluations. In this article, we discuss the differences in the behavior of firesetting, the crime of arson, and the diagnosis of pyromania. The literature on adult firesetter characteristics, classification systems, recidivism, and treatment is reviewed. Several types of common criminal and civil firesetting-related evaluations ref

Interpersonal Partner Relationships, Bonds to Children, and Informal Social Control among Persistent Male Offenders.

This qualitative study applied a life course framework to characterize the nature of interpersonal partner relationships of Mexican American young adult men affiliated with street gangs during their adolescence. Data come from a 15-year longitudinal mixed-method cohort study conducted in San Antonio, Texas. We analyzed semi-structured interviews conducted with a subsample (n = 40) during the course of three face-to-face sessions to explore the men's motivations, aspirations, and goals to lead conventional lives, despite their criminal justice involvement. Specifically, we focus on the complex

Command hallucinations and criminality: a clinical quandary.

Clinical literature on the role of command hallucinations in producing antisocial behavior is sparse and fragmented. This article reviews exploratory models of auditory hallucinations and the prevalence of command hallucinations in clinical and forensic settings. In addition, clinical guidelines are offered for assessing the authenticity of command hallucinations and their relevance to criminal behavior within the context of forensic evaluations.

A Moderated Mediation Analysis to Further Examine the Role of Verbal Intelligence in the Association Between Psychopathic Personality and Crime.

The current study examined the association between psychopathy, criminal behavior, and the role of verbal intelligence. One promising approach is to examine alternative links between psychopathic traits and criminality like moderation and mediation effects by considering the potential relevance of verbal intelligence as a possible moderating variable. We hypothesized that psychopathic traits linearly predict antisocial behavior (ASB) but that a conviction because of ASB is moderated by verbal intelligence. To test a path model of this hypothesis, N = 305 participants (42% women; n = 172 inmate

Sex offender treatment professional perceptions of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) in the Midwest.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that is precipitated by prenatal alcohol exposure. Typified by cognitive, social, and adaptive functioning impairments, FASD places impacted individuals at an elevated risk for involvement in the criminal justice system. In particular, it has been reported that some individuals diagnosed with FASD engage in inappropriate sexual behaviors. Because professionals working in the field of sexual offender treatment have the potential to strongly influence their clients, this study surveys professionals that provide treatment se
