Pumpkin polysaccharide (PPe-H) can perform physiological functions through its antioxidative and hypoglycemic effects; however, the mechanisms through which PPe-H regulates abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism caused by oxidative stress injury remain unclear. In the present study, streptozotocin was used to generate an acute diabetic mouse model, and the effects of PPe-H on glucose and lipid metabolism impaired by oxidative stress in diabetic mice were studied. PPe-H significantly reduced blood glucose levels and enhanced the oral glucose tolerance of diabetic mice under stress injury (p < 0.

Many chemotherapeutic drugs cause adverse pulmonary reactions leading to severe pulmonary disease. Though methotrexate (MTX) is used for the treatment of cancer and other diseases, it is highly toxic with multiple adverse effects including pulmonary toxicity. Essential oils represent an open frontier for pharmaceutical sciences due to their wide range of pharmacological properties. Pumpkin seeds oil (PSO) was used to investigate its ability to alleviate methotrexate-induced lung toxicity in rats. Lung tissue from MTX-treated group revealed a decrease in malondialdehyde, glutathione, and nitric

Powdery mildews (Erysiphales) are economically important plant pathogens that attack many agricultural crops. Conventional management strategies involving fungicide application face challenges, including the evolution of resistance and concerns over impacts on non-target organisms, that call for investigation of more sustainable alternatives. Mycophagous ladybird beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) feed on powdery mildew and have considerable potential as biological control agents; however, the foraging ecology and behavior of these beetles is not well understood. Here we document the olfactor

Mounting evidence supporting the negative impacts of exposure to neonicotinoids on bees has prompted the registration of novel 'bee-friendly' insecticides for agricultural use. Flupyradifurone (FPF) is a butenolide insecticide that shares the same mode of action as neonicotinoids and has been assessed to be 'practically non-toxic to adult honeybees' using current risk assessment procedures. However, these assessments overlook some routes of exposure specific to wild bees, such as contact with residues in soil for ground-nesters. Co-exposure with other pesticides may also lead to detrimental sy

AIMS: Sweetme Sweet Pumpkin™ (SSP, baked Cucurbita moschata Duch.) has been used to treat patients with depression in Korea. However, the role of SSP in improving depression has not been elucidated yet. Thus, we assessed the antidepressant-like effect of SSP and its active compound, β-carotene, with the forced swimming test (FST).
MAIN METHODS: SSP and β-carotene were orally administered once a day for 28days. The levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK), and estrogen receptor-beta (ER-β) were analyzed by Western blotting

Widespread heavy metal pollution in soils has posed serious threat to vegetable production and food security, yet little is still known about heavy metal accumulation and distribution in the majority of vegetable crops. Here, we report the generation of a tissue atlas of cadmium accumulation in zucchini (Cucurbita pepo var. Giromontial), a globally important cucurbit crop, based on two-season experiment with six genotypes grown under cadmium contaminated soils. Plant growth and development as manifested by biomass, flowering time and plant architecture were unaffected by 10 mg/kg cadmium treat

Oral mucositis is a common yet often overlooked complication of chemotherapy. Although paclitaxel (PTX) is a potent anticancer agent, it induces various pathologies in the oral tissues. Pumpkin seed oil (PSO) was prized significant pharmacological properties that can produce health-protective effects. The study aimed to highlight the effects of PTX on the dorsal tongue mucosa of rats and assess the alleviative role of PSO focusing on the underlying mechanisms. Forty rats were divided into: Control, PSO, PTX, and PTX + PSO. PTX was administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 2 mg/kg once weekly

Organic zucchini squash is a high-value vegetable crop in Florida and potential exists to expand its production throughout the state. A lack of knowledge on the effectiveness of organic products and their integration with natural enemies is an important constraint to the regulation of pest populations in organic squash production in Florida. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of insecticides labeled for organic production that can be used for management of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, on organically grown squash; and to determine the effects of the most efficient

Recent studies have documented effects of plant viruses on host plants that appear to enhance transmission by insect vectors. But, almost no empirical work has explored the implications of such apparent manipulation for interactions among co-infecting pathogens. We examined single and mixed infections of two potyviruses, watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) and zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV), that frequently co-occur in cucurbitaceae populations and share the same aphid vectors. We found that ZYMV isolates replicated at similar rates in single and mixed infections, whereas WMV strains accumulate

Immature pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) seeds contain gibberellin (GA) oxidases with unique catalytic properties resulting in GAs of unknown function for plant growth and development. Overexpression of pumpkin GA 7-oxidase (CmGA7ox) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) resulted in seedlings with elongated roots, taller plants that flower earlier with only a little increase in bioactive GA4 levels compared to control plants. In the same way, overexpression of the pumpkin GA 3-oxidase1 (CmGA3ox1) resulted in a GA overdose phenotype with increased levels of endogenous GA4. This indicates that, in Ar

Plant lecithins are complex mixtures of phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidic acid (PA) and lysophospholipids. They are increasingly demanded as natural, non-allergenic emulsifiers and as nutraceutical carriers. Quantitative data on the phospholipid (PL) fraction of less-commodity oilseeds, however, remain dispersed. This review compares the PL composition, processing-dependent extractability, and functional behavior of six oils: hemp (Cannabis sativa L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), corn/maize (Zea mays L., germ), pumpkin (Cucur

The focus of modern livestock production is increasingly shifting toward improving animal health, welfare, and product quality through the use of natural feed ingredients. Pumpkin (Cucurbita spp.) and its seeds are of interest because they contain biologically active compounds, including tocopherols and phenolic antioxidants. This study evaluated the effects of pumpkin seed cake (PSC) in rabbit diets on blood parameters, oxidative status, and trace element distribution in tissues. Sixty Popielno White rabbits were initially assigned to three dietary groups: control (0% PSC), 5% PSC, and 10% PS

A green and environmental friendly method with simple sequential injection spectrophotometry using natural reagent extract from pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Decne) for determination of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) was developed. The maximum absorption of the yellow crude extract containing the β-carotene compound occurred at a wavelength of 450nm. The yellow extract solution was bleached by BPO to change the color to a colorless solution. The optimum conditions of the proposed method, such as extraction solvent influence of pH, dilution of pumpkin extracts solution, aspiration volume of reagent and s

BACKGROUND: The success of insecticide-laced liquid protein bait spray applications relies on attraction and consumption by the target pest. Commercial liquid baits often recommend a broad range of dilution rates, even though many insects adjust their intake of foods based on nutrient concentrations. This compensatory feeding response could influence the amount of toxin ingested, but this impact has not been thoroughly elucidated. We manipulated liquid diet and spinosad concentrations to reveal their effects on consumption and mortality in three lines of melon flies, Zeugodacus cucurbitae, tha

β-carotene, a carotenoid with strong antioxidant and immunity-enhancing properties, is a safe and widely available precursor of vitamin A in nature. Pumpkin powder, as a familiar agricultural product, is rich in vitamins, amino acids, and minerals, which also contain β-carotene. Currently, there remain few published reports on the effects of pumpkin powder on antioxidant function, reproductive performance, and egg quality in laying hens, representing a significant gap in existing research. 270 laying hens were divided into three groups; the CON group was fed a basal diet, the BCA group was fed

Colchicine (CNE) is used to treat various inflammatory conditions, but its use is limited by its hepatotoxic potential. This study assessed the protective effect of pumpkin seed oil (PPN) against CNE-induced liver injury in rats. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated into four groups: control, PPN (4 mL/kg b.wt), CNE (0.6 mg/kg b.wt), and CNE+PPN, and received oral treatments for 56 days. CNE significantly elevated liver enzymes (ALP, GGT, AST, and ALT) and bilirubin levels, and induced dyslipidemia, while PPN co-treatment restored these parameters toward normal. Antioxidant defenses,

This study investigated the effects of metal oxide nanoparticles on bioethanol production from lignocellulosic wastes-dragon fruit pomace, and pumpkin pomace-using yeast strains Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Kluyveromyces marxianus, and Candida boidinii. Among the tested substrates, pumpkin pomace yielded the highest ethanol concentrations, particularly at the highest biomass loading (150 g/L). Enzymatic hydrolysis with cellulase was optimized, with 60 FPU/g substrate identified as the most cost-effective loading for maximizing sugar release and ethanol yield. The application of metal oxide nanopa
