Understanding the subjective experience of a visually stable world during eye movements has been an important research topic for many years. Various studies were conducted to reveal fundamental mechanisms of this phenomenon. For example, in the paradigm saccadic suppression of displacement (SSD), it has been observed that a small displacement of a saccade target could not easily be reported if this displacement took place during a saccade. New results from Zimmermann et al. (J Neurophysiol 112(12):3066-3076, 2014) show that the effect of being oblivious to small displacements occurs not only d

Compared to all other hearing animals, insects are the smallest ones, both in absolute terms and in relation to the wavelength of most biologically relevant sounds. The ears of insects can be located at almost any possible body part, such as wings, legs, mouthparts, thorax or abdomen. The interaural distances are generally so small that cues for directional hearing such as interaural time and intensity differences (IITs and IIDs) are also incredibly small, so that the small body size should be a strong constraint for directional hearing. Yet, when tested in behavioral essays for the precision

In guiding adaptive behavior, efference copy signals or corollary discharge are traditionally considered to serve as predictors of self-generated sensory inputs and by interfering with their central processing are able to counter unwanted consequences of an animal's own actions. Here, in a speculative reflection on this issue, we consider a different functional role for such intrinsic predictive signaling, namely in stabilizing gaze during locomotion where resultant changes in head orientation in space require online compensatory eye movements in order to prevent retinal image slip. The direct

Many examples of natural noise show common amplitude modulations at different frequency regions. This kind of noise has been termed comodulated noise and is widely examined in hearing research, where an enhanced detectability of pure tones and narrow noise bands in comodulated noise compared to unmodulated noise is well known as the CMR or CDD effects, respectively. Here it is shown that only one signal processing step, a compressive nonlinearity motivated by the peripheral auditory system, is sufficient to explain a considerable contribution to these effects. Using an analytical approach, the

The discharge of secondary vestibular neurons relays the activity of the vestibular endorgans, occasioned by movements in three-dimensional physical space. At a slightly higher level of analysis, the discharge of each secondary vestibular neuron participates in a multifiber projection or pathway from primary afferents via the secondary neurons to another neuronal population. The logical organization of this projection determines whether characteristics of physical space are retained or lost. The logical structure of physical space is standardly expressed in terms of the mathematics of group th

Human observers can perceive the three- dimensional (3-D) structure of their environment using various cues, an important one of which is optic flow. The motion of any point's projection on the retina depends both on the point's movement in space and on its distance from the eye. Therefore, retinal motion can be used to extract the 3-D structure of the environment and the shape of objects, in a process known as structure-from-motion (SFM). However, because many combinations of 3-D structure and motion can lead to the same optic flow, SFM is an ill-posed inverse problem. The rigidity hypothesis

Mean-field theory of brain dynamics is applied to explain the properties of gamma (> or approximately 30 Hz) oscillations of cortical activity often seen during vision experiments. It is shown that mm-scale patchy connections in the primary visual cortex can support collective gamma oscillations with the correct frequencies and spatial structure, even when driven by uncorrelated inputs. This occurs via resonances associated with the the periodic modulation of the network connections, rather than being due to single-cell properties alone. Near-resonant gamma waves are shown to obey the Schrödin

Recently it has been demonstrated by Albo that partial coherence analysis is sensitive to signal to noise ratio (SNR) and that it will always identify the signal with the highest SNR among the three signals as the main (driving) influence. We propose to use time delay analysis in parallel to partial coherence analysis to identify the connectivities between the multivariate time series. Both are applied to a theoretical model (used by Albo) to analyse the connections introduced in the model. Time delay analysis identifies the connections correctly. We also apply these analyses to the electroenc

Many important intracranial neural pathways are involved in the control of the two muscles of the human pupil and the observation and analysis of pupil responses to light or other stimuli is of great interest in many clinical procedures. The binocular pupil model presented in this document has a topology encompassing much of the complexity of the pupil system neurophysiology. The dynamic parameters of the model were matched against pupil experiments under multiple conditions. It is employed here to simulate responses to the swinging flashlight test, a procedure which is routinely practiced in

Prolonged presentation of visually ambiguous figures leads to perceptual switching. Individual switching rates show great variability. The present study compares individuals with high versus low switching rates by investigating human scalp electroencephalogram and blink rates. Eight subjects viewed the Necker cube continuously and responded to perceptual switching by pressing a button. Frequent switchers showed characteristic occipital alpha and frontal theta band activity prior to a switch, whereas infrequent switchers did not. The alpha activity was specific to switching, the theta activity

In detailed simulations we present a coordinated delayed feedback stimulation as a particularly robust and mild technique for desynchronization. We feed back the measured and band-pass filtered local filed potential via several or multiple sites with different delays, respectively. This yields a resounding desynchronization in a naturally demand-controlled way. Our novel approach is superior to previously developed techniques: It is robust against variations of system parameters, e.g., the mean firing rate. It does not require time-consuming calibration. It also prevents intermittent resynchro

The previous companion paper describes the initial (seed) schema architecture that gives rise to the observed prey-catching behavior. In this second paper in the series we describe the fundamental adaptive processes required during learning after lesioning. Following bilateral transections of the hypoglossal nerve, anurans lunge toward mealworms with no accompanying tongue or jaw movement. Nevertheless anurans with permanent hypoglossal transections eventually learn to catch their prey by first learning to open their mouth again and then lunging their body further and increasing their head ang

Movement-related potentials (MRP), a component of the electroencephalogram (EEG) generated during voluntary movements, are known to vary during adaptation to changing loads and to different load types. This study attempts to reveal these changes. A novel denoising algorithm based on iterative approximation was applied to the MRPs recorded from four subjects while performing simple movements against changing loads. The results show that when subjects perform a repetitive task under a constant load there appears a significant peak in the activity of several MRP components recorded over the prefr

A motor action often involves the coordination of several motor synergies and requires flexible adjustment of the ongoing execution based on feedback signals. To elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying the construction and selection of motor synergies, we study prey-capture in anurans. Experimental data demonstrate the intricate interaction between different motor synergies, including the interplay of their afferent feedback signals (Weerasuriya 1991; Anderson and Nishikawa 1996). Such data provide insights for the general issues concerning two-way information flow between sensory centers,

Spatiotemporal characteristics of spontaneous alpha EEG activity patterns are analyzed in terms of large-scale phase synchronization. During periods with strong phase synchronization over the entire scalp, phase patterns take either of two forms; one is a gradual phase shift between frontal and occipital regions and the other is a stepwise pattern with a sudden phase shift in the central region. The former is regarded as a traveling wave of electrocortical activity, of which the direction of propagation is predominantly from anterior to posterior in three out of four subjects, and opposite in

Contour integration in low-level vision is believed to occur based on lateral interaction between neurons with similar orientation tuning. How such interactions could arise in the brain has been an open question. Our model suggests that the interactions can be learned through input-driven self-organization, i.e., through the same mechanism that underlies many other developmental and functional phenomena in the visual cortex. The model also shows how synchronized firing mediated by these lateral connections can represent the percept of a contour, resulting in performance similar to that of huma

Composite stimulation techniques are presented here which are based on a soft (i.e., slow and mild) reset. They effectively desynchronize a cluster of globally coupled phase oscillators in the presence of noise. A composite stimulus contains two qualitatively different stimuli. The first stimulus is either a periodic pulse train or a smooth, sinusoidal periodic stimulus with an entraining frequency close to the cluster's natural frequency. In the course of several periods of the entrainment, the cluster's dynamics is reset (restarted), independently of its initial dynamic state. The second sti

Subjective vertical orientation, eye and body movements, and motion sickness all depend on the way our central nervous system deals with the gravito-inertial force resolution problem: how to discern accelerations due to motion from those due to gravity, despite these accelerations being physically indistinguishable. To control body or eye movements, the accelerations due to motion should be known explicitly. Hence, somehow gravity should be filtered out of the specific force or gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA, the sum of both accelerations) as sensed by the otoliths, which are the linear ac

An adaptive estimator model of human spatial orientation is presented. The adaptive model dynamically weights sensory error signals. More specific, the model weights the difference between expected and actual sensory signals as a function of environmental conditions. The model does not require any changes in model parameters. Differences with existing models of spatial orientation are that: (1) environmental conditions are not specified but estimated, (2) the sensor noise characteristics are the only parameters supplied by the model designer, (3) history-dependent effects and mental resources

The pyloric Central Pattern Generator (CPG) in the lobster has an architecture in which every neuron receives at least one connection from another member of the CPG. We call this a "non-open" network topology. An "open" topology, where at least one neuron does not receive synapses from any other CPG member, is found neither in the pyloric nor in the gastric mill CPG. Here we investigate a possible reason for this topological structure using the ability to perform a biologically functional task as a measure of the efficacy of the network. When the CPG is composed of model neurons that exhibit r
