Maternal socioeconomic factors and the risk of premature birth and low birth weight in Cyprus: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Prematurity and low birth weight are significant predictors of perinatal morbidity and mortality and are influenced by the overall health and socioeconomic status of the pregnant mother. Although Cyprus is characterized by the highest prematurity rate in Europe (13.1% in 2014), the relationship between maternal health and socioeconomic characteristics with prematurity and low birth weight has never been investigated. We aimed to investigate the association of maternal demographic, clinical and socioeconomic characteristics with premature delivery and low neonatal birth weight in Cy

Incidence of end-stage renal disease in the Turkish-Cypriot population of Northern Cyprus: a population based study.

BACKGROUND: This is the first report of the incidence and causes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) of the Turkish-Cypriot population in Northern Cyprus. METHODS: Data were collected over eight consecutive years (2004-2011) from all those starting renal replacement therapy (RRT) in this population. Crude and age-standardised incidence at 90 days was calculated and comparisons made with other national registries. We collected DNA from the entire prevalent population. As an initial experiment we looked for two genetic causes of ESRD that have been reported in Greek Cypriots. RESULTS: Crude and

Epidemiological study of Q fever in humans, ruminant animals, and ticks in Cyprus using a geographical information system.

A cross-sectional study of Q fever was conducted in a representative sample of the human and animal population in Cyprus in order to assess the seroprevalence of Q fever and the prevalence of related risk factors. A total of 583 human and 974 ruminant animal serum samples were collected and tested for the detection of antibodies against Coxiella burnetii phase II antigen using an indirect immunofluorescent assay. One hundred forty-one ticks were collected from the infested animals examined; the polymerase chain reaction and the shell-vial technique were used to detect and isolate C. burnetii.

Network epidemiological analysis of COVID-19 transmission patterns by age, occupation and residence across four waves in Cyprus.

Complex transmission patterns are not immediately obvious to epidemiologists, hindering the development of effective intervention strategies. The aim is to develop network-based tools to identify transmission patterns across age-groups, occupations, and locations. Infection networks were constructed using COVID-19 contact tracing data, provided by the Cyprus Ministry of Health, for March 2020 to May 2021. Transmission patterns within/across age-groups, districts, and economic activities, as well as the presence of super-spreaders and the vulnerability of different groups, were assessed using t

Losing a non-native, gaining an endemic: Description of Camponotus (Myrmentoma) limbouros sp. nov. (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) from Cyprus.

The ever-growing movement of people and goods across the world has resulted in the translocation of tens of thousands of species outside their native ranges, including more than 500 species of ants. However, the native ranges of some non-native species are still unclear and further research using molecular tools is needed. Situated in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus hosts a high percentage of both endemic and non-native ant taxa, with the latter species posing a threat to this native biodiversity, society, and the economy. The lack of up-to-date taxonomic revisions for many genera and knowle

Burden of non-communicable diseases in Cyprus, 1990-2017: findings from the Global Burden of Disease 2017 study.

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for over 90% of all deaths in the Cypriot population, in 2018. However, a detailed and comprehensive overview of the impact of NCDs on population health of Cyprus over the period of 1990 to 2017, expressed in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), is currently not available. Knowledge about the drivers of changes in NCD DALYs over time is paramount to identify priorities for the prevention of NCDs in Cyprus and guide evidence-based decision making. The objectives of this paper were to: 1) assess the burden of NCDs in terms of years of lif

Associations of parental, pregnancy and infant characteristics with appetite traits in infancy: Results from a prospective study of infants in Cyprus.

Parental and infant factors (eg pre-pregnancy maternal BMI, gestational body weight, breast or formula feeding) are known to influence the risk of developing obesity in later life, but whether this is influenced by their effects on appetite traits is unknown. We investigated the influence of developmental factors associated with obesity on appetite traits in infancy. Appetite traits were assessed by maternal completion of the Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire at 2-4 weeks and 6 months and the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire at 12 months in a cohort of 432 infants born in Cyprus and foll

Sociodemographic, behavioral, and obstetric factors associated with preterm birth and its severity: A matched case-control study in Cyprus.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth (PTB), defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, is a major cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity worldwide. Its multifactorial etiology remains incompletely understood, and Cyprus reports among the highest PTB rates in Europe, highlighting the need for population-specific evidence. This study aimed to investigate the sociodemographic, behavioral, and obstetric history factors of PTB in Cyprus and to examine whether these factors differed according to the degree of prematurity. METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted at a tertiary referral h

Prevalence of Family Refusal and Associated Factors in Declared Brain Death: A Six-Year Retrospective Study in Northern Cyprus.

Kidney transplantation provides a higher quality of life, a longer life expectancy for end-stage renal disease patients, and a lower cost than other treatments. Unfortunately, organ shortage for kidney transplantation is a major obstacle for countries with long waiting lists. Approaches to solving organ shortages with laws and regulations differ between countries. The reasons for these differences are evaluated by considering many factors, such as religious beliefs, sociocultural differences, and distrust in health systems. Until another evidence-based treatment becomes available, efforts to i

Greek adaptation of the Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS) in adults from the Republic of Cyprus: A bidimensional model may not be universal.

The Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS) is a 17-item instrument designed to assess distinct facets of Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) and Healthy Orthorexia (HO). While a bidimensional model of TOS scores has been supported in diverse national and linguistic groups, the psychometric properties of the TOS have not been previously assessed in Greek-speaking populations. To rectify this, we assessed the psychometric properties of a novel Greek translation of the TOS in a sample of adults from Cyprus. A total of 1248 respondents (710 women, 538 men) completed the Greek TOS, as well as previously validated measu

Variation of microbial load and biochemical activity of ready-to-eat salads in Cyprus as affected by vegetable type, season, and producer.

Fresh vegetables are important components of an everyday balanced diet making ready to-eat-salads (RTE) a commodity widely consumed. However, in the past few years these products have been linked with outbreaks of salmonellosis and listeriosis; thus the continuous investigation of their safety is an essential requirement. A total of 216 samples of ready-to-eat salads from the Cypriot market were analysed to determine the microbiological quality and safety, along with physicochemical attributes of the salads and identify possible correlations between them. The samples were randomly collected fr

In vitro Anti-Trichomonas vaginalis Activity of Cyprus Endemic Plant Origanum majorana Essential Oil and Synergistic Effect with Metronidazole.

Currently, the treatment of Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis) typically involves the use of 5-nitroimidazoles (such as metronidazole and tinidazole). However, an increasing failure in treatment is observed due to resistance developed to these drugs. For this reason, alternative drugs have been investigated, especially by using natural products. In our study, the anti-T. vaginalis activity of the Origanum majorana essential oil (OMEO), which is a Cyprus endemic plant, and its synergistic effect with metronidazole were investigated. The essential oil was extracted through hydrodistillation of
