Complications and Outcomes of Pregnancy and Cesarean Delivery in Women With Neuropathic Bladder and Lower Urinary Tract Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the outcomes of pregnancy and cesarean delivery (CD) in women with neuropathic bladder (NB) and pediatric lower urinary tract reconstruction (LUTR) as these women often have normal fertility and may become pregnant. METHODS: We reviewed consecutive patients with NB due to spinal dysraphism who underwent LUTR, became pregnant, and had a CD at our institution from July 2001 to June 2016. We collected data on demographics, hydronephrosis, symptomatic urinary tract infection, continence, and catheterization during pregnancy. CD data included gestational age, abdominal or u

Use of Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diet UR Urinary St/Ox to Dissolve Struvite Cystoliths.

The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of feeding the commercially available diet, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets UR Urinary St/Ox, for the dissolution of struvite cystoliths in cats with naturally occurring disease. Twelve cats with clinical signs of lower urinary tract disease and cystoliths confirmed via radiographs were enrolled. The cats were fed the study diet ad libitum and assessed by abdominal radiographs weekly. Cats with cystoliths that resolved based on radiographs and confirmatory ultrasound examination were considered diet successes. Cats with no change in cy

Hypercalcemia of malignancy associated with renal cell carcinoma in a dog.

A 10 yr old castrated male Siberian husky was evaluated for polyuria, polydipsia, a retroperitoneal mass, and urolithiasis. A marked elevation in Ca was noted on initial blood work, and results of additional testing were consistent with hypercalcemia of malignancy, including an elevated parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrp) value. Based on clinical signs, blood work, diagnostic imaging, and cytology results, unilateral renal neoplasia was suspected. Following a complete right nephrectomy and cystotomy, histopathologic examination confirmed a diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Five

Excretory urographic, ultrasonographic, and cystoscopic characteristics of urinary bladder abscesses in a dog.

A 7-year-old male neutered, 6.5 kg, Maltese breed dog was referred with a history of dysuria after undergoing two cystotomies to remove calcium oxalate uroliths. Survey radiographs were inconclusive. Excretory urography allowed visualization of two filling defects in the cranioventral urinary bladder region. Ultrasonography showed urinary bladder sediments, a diffusely thickened wall, and two circumscribed intramural/intraluminal structures with an anechoic interior and a smooth and regular surface. The cystoscopic diagnosis was urinary bladder abscesses and urine cultures were positive for Es

[Extensive vulva cancer with enormous tumor of the vagina].

The following is a case report documenting a 53-year old patient with extremely advanced vulva cancer (stage IV). The patient needed urgent operative treatment because of massive bleeding from large tumor located inside and out of the vagina. The prime step was to stop tumor hemorrhage, perform cystotomy and decompression of the urinary bladder and exteriorization of artificial anus. Second operation was a conventional oncologic procedure, which contained: radical vulectomy, hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy, cystectomy with excision of the urethra, the excision of almost the entire vagina, lymphad

Urethral polyp in a 1-month-old child.

Urethral polyps are a rare finding in children, particularly in the very young. They are suspected by the presence of various clinical signs such as obstruction, voiding dysfunction and haematuria. There is an association with other urinary tract congenital anomalies. They are usually benign fibro-epithelial lesions with no tendency to recur and are treated by surgical ablation, fulguration or laser therapy. We report a 1-month-old boy with an antenatally diagnosed left ectopic pelvic kidney, postnatal urinary tract infection and no clinical signs of obstruction. Voiding cystourethrography to

Use of laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy for removal of urinary calculi in dogs.

Urinary calculi were removed by means of laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy in 3 dogs. Two small abdominal incisions were made--1 for a laparoscope and 1 for placement of a Babcock forceps to aid in grasping and lifting the urinary bladder to the abdominal wall. A cystoscope and instruments for calculi removal were passed through a small cystotomy. Biopsy of the urinary bladder or other abdominal organs could also be performed by use of this technique. Laparoscopic-assisted cystoscopy was minimally invasive and provided clear images of the mucosal surface of the urinary bladder and proximal port

A case of Horner's syndrome after the surgical treatment of pulmonary hydatid cyst.

We report a case of right-sided iatrogenic Horner's syndrome developed after surgical treatment for pulmonary hydatid cyst. This occurred in a 10 year old girl who had been diagnosed as having a ruptured lung hydatid cyst on the basis of clinical, radiological, serological, histopathological and perioperative findings. The patient underwent right thoracotomy and the cystotomy-capitonnage for the cyst. Right upper lid ptosis, right miosis and anisocoria were recognized on the first postoperative day. Findings of Horner's syndrome were ameliorated completely at the 6th month. In conclusion, iatr

Transurethral Cystolithotripsy vs Percutaneous Cystolithotomy for Bladder Stones in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Comparing Clinical Outcomes and Complications.

Background: The minimally invasive treatment of bladder stones (BS) in children has been demonstrated to be safe and effective by both transurethral cystolithotripsy (TUCL) and percutaneous cystolithotomy (PCCL). The surgical outcomes and potential complications associated with these two treatments remain uncertain. We conducted a meta-analysis to compare TUCL and PCCL in pediatric BS with a focus on long-term stone-free rates (SFR), postoperative complications, and cost-effectiveness. Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science were last searched on September 1

Giant viable hydatid cyst of the lung revealed by hiccups.

Hydatid cystic disease is still a significant clinical problem in endemic countries. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver and lung. The resulting large cysts in the lung are a special clinical entity called giant hydatid cysts. We present a case of this rare entity: An 18-year-old woman presented with three month history of hiccups and progressive dyspnea. Chest X-ray revealed a very large homogenous opacity of the left lung. A diagnosis of giant hydatid cyst was made intra operatively; the patient was treated surgically using cystotomy and capitonnage without post-operative complica

Silicone Sealant as a Urethrovesical Foreign Body: Lessons in Surgical Management.

We present a rare case of a male patient who presented following self-injection of silicone sealant into a condom placed within the urethra that migrated intravesically. The patient had mild voiding symptoms and haematuria. Imaging demonstrated radio-opaque foreign material extending from the bulbar urethra into the bladder. Endoscopic retrieval was unsuccessful due to the material's size and consistency. Definitive management was achieved via open Pfannenstiel cystotomy, with intact removal of the foreign body and uneventful recovery. Follow-up cystography and flow rate studies within two mon

An Unusual Complication of Suprapubic Catheter Migration into the Left Ureter.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is characterized by: near absence of dystrophin in skeletal muscles; low percentage of revertant myofibers; up-regulation of utrophin synthesis; and a high degree of muscle fibrosis. In patient quadriceps femoris biopsies (n = 6, ages between 3-9 years) an inverse correlation was observed between the levels of collagen type I - representing fibrosis - and the levels of utrophin. This correlation was independent of the patient's age and was observed in the entire muscle biopsy sections. In the mdx mice diaphragm (n = 6/group), inhibition of fibrosis by halofuginone r
