A 67-year-old woman who had sideroblastic anemia had a spuriously elevated platelet count due primarily to Pappenheimer bodies. The platelet count on an electrooptical instrument was falsely elevated. The true platelet count was determined by phase microscopy using lysed whole blood and by the peripheral blood smear. There appear to have been no previous reports of falsely elevated platelet counts due to Pappenheimer bodies. Other causes of spuriously elevated platelet counts are reviewed. The reasons for the spurious counts are discussed.

Two cases of Ewing's sarcoma and two neuroblastoma, rosette forming and round cell type, were studied electron microscopically and their fine structures were compared. The neoplastic cells of Ewing's sarcoma were characterized by aggregated glycogen particles in the cytoplasm. They had pseudopod-like cytoplasmic processes having tight junctions, which never contained microtubules or mitochondria. Periodate-reactive glycoconjugates in human leukaemic cells were examined electron microscopically by the periodic acid-thiocarbohydrazide-silver proteinate (PA-TCH-SP) method. By using surgical materials obtained from 7 cases of vestibular schwannoma, the ultrastructure of melanocytes in the dark cell area of human vestibular organs was examined by light microscopy and electron microscopy. A case of CD56/NCAM+ malignant lymphoma is reported. Only a rare malignant lymphoma cell showed azurophilic granules in the cytoplasm of Giesma-stained preparations, while electron microscopic examination revealed occasional cytoplasmic granules with paracrystalline inclusions. TDP-43, or TAR DNA-binding protein 43, is a pathological marker of a spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and frontotemporal lobar degeneration with ubiquitin-positive inclusions. An ultrastructural comparison of arachnoid villi and meningiomas was made in man. Human arachnoid villi basically consisted of four portions: fibrous capsule; arachnoid cell layer; cap cell cluster; and central core. The relationship of the paraphyseal-choroid plexus complex to parathyroid gland function was investigated in adult frogs.
